IPRA//ISSUES//CHALLENGES

1. EDUCATIONAL STATUS
 ADULTS:
 Majority of the adults are elementary undergraduate (finished up until grade 2 or 3)
 Literacy rate is low
 Proximity of the school is far, financial problem, discrimination experiences against
indigenous people
 CHILDREN:
 Established their own IP school named Balay yat Pag-adalan kat mga Katutubo
 Provided the younger generation an opportunity to better education
 Even with free and accessible education in the community, financial constraints remain
as the primary reason why some of the students did not finish studying because they
need to work for their family
2. ENVIRONMENTAL SITUATION
 The government declared the forests as a protect area
 Batak can no longer be to live as they live as they like, they cannot hunt freely, and face
competition from companies that are looking for natural resources in Palawan
3. ECONOMIC THREATS
 When mining and logging companies started to flood in, they destroyed lard parts of the
forest
 Bataks main source of food is wild pig, but because of the mining, the pig became scarce
and hunting became more difficult
 Their source of income was coconut oil and rice but because of mining, it became
impossible to grow (no crops = no money)
 Because mining can make a lot of money, and mining can bring in a lot of money, the
government decided to sacrifice a smaller amount of people in order to save a greater
number
4. ENVIRONMENTAL THREATS
 Because of the loss of land, the Batak tribe will no longer be able to survive and will be
forced to move to other areas
 There will not be enough food and water (polluted rivers) for most of the people and
they will die out
 The tribe is shy and too poor to pay for medical or school care
5. SOCIAL THREATES
 Companies started mining and polluting the water.
 When the water became contaminated, the people started getting sick.
 They are facing diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, and measles.
 The land that was taken away and being mined was important because it contained
important religious landmarks, burial sites, and spiritual places
 If they lose these they will also lose their identity as a tribe and as humans
 Farms are being destroyed as well as their source of income
