Reading Conferences
Reflection from prior lesson: Some groups will be meeting for the first time while
other groups will be meeting for the third. I will ask questions based on where we left off
the last time we met.
Objective: I can identify the theme of a story by using key details supported by the text
and I can compare how African Americans were treated in the past compared to today.
Standards:
5.H.4.5 - Compare and contrast social, economic, and philosophical differences
between the north and the south prior to the Civil War
5.RI.2 - Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported
by key details; summarize the text.
Materials Needed: Muhammad Ali pocket book, close reading outline, guiding
questions sheet, pencil
Contextual Factors/Learner Characteristics: This lesson is the last hour of the day,
learner characteristics may vary based on the day the learner has had. Let’s make sure
that the end of the day goes out positive and strong!
