Lesson 2 - Wednesday

Reading Conferences

Topic: Muhammad Ali
Date: 11/28/18

Reflection from prior lesson: Some groups will be meeting for the first time while
other groups will be meeting for the third. I will ask questions based on where we left off
the last time we met.

Objective: I can identify the theme of a story by using key details supported by the text
and I can compare how African Americans were treated in the past compared to today.

Standards:
5.H.4.5 - Compare and contrast social, economic, and philosophical differences
between the north and the south prior to the Civil War
5.RI.2 - Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported
by key details; summarize the text.

Materials Needed: Muhammad Ali pocket book, close reading outline, guiding
questions sheet, pencil

Contextual Factors/Learner Characteristics: This lesson is the last hour of the day,
learner characteristics may vary based on the day the learner has had. Let’s make sure
that the end of the day goes out positive and strong!

A. The Lesson - (15-20 minutes for each group)


a. Intro: 5 minutes
i. Some groups will be just starting the reading while others will be
meeting for the third time. I will ask questions based on the group
and where we left off.
b. Content: 10 minutes
i. Group 2/Level W:
1. 1st read
a. Find main idea using key details
ii. Group 1/Level T:
1. Finish 1st read/begin 2nd read
a. Find main idea from key details
b. Work on placing the questions to dig deeper into the
text
iii. Group 4/Level T:
1. Finish 2nd read/begin 3rd read
a. Finish placing questions to go deeper into the text
b. Find unknown vocabulary and decode it
c. Closure: 5 minutes
i. Group 2: What is the main idea using our key details?
ii. Group 1: What is the main idea using our key details we found from
digging deeper with the text dependent questions?
iii. Group 4: Diving deeper into the text, we will use text questions to
help us gather more key details. We now know what (insert vocab
word) means in the context of this text.

C. Differentiated Instruction - For students with IEPs, work with them one on one
to help them understand the content.
