Day
National Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day is an annual observance held on April 10 to highlight
the impact of HIV/AIDS on young people. The awareness day is also an occasion to recognize the
efforts of young people to help achieve an AIDS-free generation.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), youth 13 to 24 years old
accounted for 21% of all new HIV diagnoses in the United States in 2016. CDC reports that at the
end of 2015, an estimated 60,300 youth were living with HIV in the United States. Of these, 51%, or
31,000, were living with undiagnosed HIV—the highest rate of undiagnosed HIV in any age group.
Youth with HIV also have the lowest rate of viral suppression for any age group.
