1 Overview
The active antenna unit (AAU) is a new type of RF module following the RFU and RRU. It
incorporates the functions of RRUs and conventional antennas and requires less site
resources.
The AAU5611 is one of Huawei's main products that implement massive MIMO in NR and
LTE TDD networks. The following figures show the position of the AAU5611 in NR and LTE
networks, respectively.
The AAU5611 supports 64T64R. With a sharp increase in transmit and receive antenna
channels, this product provides greater diversity, array, spatial multiplexing, and interference
suppression gains. This helps operators to maximize the use of existing site and spectrum
resources, enhance the system performance, and improve wireless network capacity.
2 Product Characteristics
Leading Performance
Multiple channels
The AAU5611 uses the massive MIMO technology and supports 64T64R. Massive
MIMO features the adoption of massive antenna arrays for joint signal reception and
demodulation or transmission, and therefore significantly enhances single-user link
performance and multi-user spatial multiplexing capability, and improves system link
quality and transmission rates when compared with traditional multiple-antenna
technologies. Massive MIMO also enables the system to flexibly adjust beam forms in
both the horizontal and vertical planes, significantly enhancing 3D coverage capability.
High power
The AAU5611 adopts the industry-leading power amplification technology,
Huawei-developed IF and RF chip, and unique antenna element technology. The module
features high power, large bandwidth, and small size. The advanced power amplification
technology achieves a maximum of 160 W power and supports a wider coverage area.
High Integration
Light weight and small size
The AAU5611 integrates the functions of antennas and RF modules with a total weight
of 47 kg and a small size (965 mm x 470 mm x 220 mm). Its weight and dimensions are
far less than those of the traditional RRU+antenna solution.
Small frontal area
The frontal area (965 mm x 470 mm) of the AAU5611 is smaller than that of a common
antenna.
Flexible deployment
The integrated design of the AAU5611 saves the jumper, external combiner, and the
installation space required by the RRU. This simplifies the antenna installation platform
and enables flexible deployment. Its support for 3D beamforming and tilt adjustment
reduces requirements on the antenna height and facilitates installation.

When the ambient temperature of the NR static sensitivity is 25°C, the test configuration should comply
with 3GPP TS 38.104 (QPSK, R = 1/3, 51 RBs).
When the ambient temperature of the LTE TDD static sensitivity is 25°C, the test configuration should
comply with 3GPP TS 36.141 (QPSK, R = 1/3, 25 RBs).
The typical power consumption refers to the power consumption when the ambient temperature is 25°C
and the traffic load reaches 50%. The actual power consumption has a 10% deviation from this value.
