peachment proceeded apace.
Democrats on Monday sub-
poenaed Rudy Giuliani, the presi-
dent’s personal lawyer who was at
the heart of Trump’s efforts to get
Ukraine to investigate political rival

one of Trump’s staunchest defend-
ers, Senate Majority Leader Mitch
McConnell, said he would have

Amodei is a moderate who sometimes makes a point of striking a
nonpartisan tone. But he’s also the chair of Trump’s campaign in the
state. His apparent endorsement of the Democrats’ investigation quick-
ly became a headline. His Facebook page filled up with people calling
him a “traitor” and “RINO” (Republican in name only) who should
be voted out of office — along with some scattered praise from those
across the aisle.

tract expired Monday.
Gale: CLW wanted to stay in

weeks ago to work out a deal,”
he said. “They responded by

were eligible to Gale
use the clinic at no cost to the

generating about 30 visits per
month, which Gale admitted
actually cost CLW more than it
saved.
“The employees who used it
loved it,” he said. “I thought may-
be it would cut down our costs,
but to break even we needed 50
to 60 visits per month. So we
were under-utilizing it.”
Still, Gale said, CLW is seek-
ing options to keep that benefit
for employees.
“We are talking with other
clinics,” he said. “(Employees)
can use the Baptist clinic just
like a regular clinic, I guess, but
it will come with a copay and
other costs.”

But Pyle did not back
down from his position.
“I lived in East Colum-
bus, growing up my whole
life,” he said. “I go through
that area, and to see that
debris everywhere — and
I know that there’s certain
requirements of (Federal
Emergency Management
Agency) and everything
else, but I think there’s
more that could have
been done in the city.”
The discussion was
part of the larger topic
of city-county relations,
which was raised when
moderator Carrie Ste-
phenson asked each of
the five supervisor can-
didates present to rate
the relationship on a
1-10 scale. Stephenson is
vice chair of the Colum-
bus-Lowndes League of
Voters, which hosted the
forum.
The candidates who
actually responded with
a number were Pyle and
District 3 hopeful Demo-
crat Tim Heard, who gave
the relationship a “2 or 3”
and a 3, respectively.
“It seems like they
can’t really, from what
I’ve seen on the outside, ...

My thought here is that
Columbus is Lowndes
County. When someone
says Columbus, they’re
looking at the entire city
of Columbus and Lowndes
County. It’s inevitable that
you have to grow from in-

the city and county split in
2017 over their joint parks
agreement, and each enti-
ty now runs its own parks
and recreation depart-
ment.
“I think that the re-
lationship we have with
the city is a good rela-
tionship,” Brooks said. “I

Policing and
the political climate
God bless our law enforce-
ment men and women. They
are doing a job like our mili-
tary are doing: protecting us,
which is unappreciated and
not respected by many. Some
politicians have created and
encouraged a climate to criti-
cize the police for racial profil-
ing in many cases. Profiling
is a problem in some cases,
but it is being corrected as we
speak. When politicians do
not support our law enforce-
ment community, we are in a
sorry state of affairs.
In some cases politicians in
powerful places
have blamed the police for
just doing their job. Every
time I meet a policeman, I tell
him thank you for protecting
us. Respect for police officers,
teachers and all first respond-
ers is not taught in the home
any
more. Respect for others in
general is not taught period.
I support our local police
department. God bless each

guests had stayed at her
neighbors’ house via Airb-
nb in a six-week period
and expressed concerns
about noise and safety in
the neighborhood.
Osborne, Camp and
Nettles all said the pro-
posed restrictions are
an overreaction from the
city.
“I don’t see where the
squeaky wheel is that
needs to be greased,”
Nettles said. “If we had
a resident or two come
to a meeting, that is a
very, very small percent-
age of the entire city of
Starkville.”
Osborne, who previ-
ously told The Dispatch
she would have to stop
using her property in
central Starkville if the
proposed restrictions
pass, offered to let city
leaders stay in her Airb-
nb free of charge so they
can understand how the
short-term rental system
works. They also need to
know how many proper-
ties would be impacted
by the restrictions before
passing them, she said.
“How, if they don’t
know the number of prop-
erties, can they possibly
know the economic im-
pact of this regulation,
whether it be through
tourism dollars, through
property values decreas-
ing, all of that?” Osborne
said after the meeting.

lic input sessions for the
proposed code will be

CVS stops sale of heartburn drugs with suspect contaminant

of popular heartburn
treatment Zantac and its
generic store brand after
warnings by U.S. health
regulators.
It’s the latest precau-
tionary move by retailers
and manufacturers after
the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration recently
warned consumers about
a potentially dangerous
contaminant in prescrip-
tion and over-the-counter
versions of Zantac.
In its announcement
this weekend, CVS said
customers who bought
Zantac products can re-
turn them for a refund.
The retailer will continue
to sell other heartburn
medications.
In September, the FDA
said it detected low levels
of a probable cancer-caus-
ing chemical known as
NDMA in Zantac and
related generic drugs to
treat ulcers and reflux dis-
ease.

MSU’s penchant for penalties proving costly

STARKVILLE — As Joe
Moorhead slouched behind the
podium in the underbelly of Jor-
dan-Hare Stadium on Saturday
night, there was audible frustra-
tion in his voice.
Having just seen his team
run off the field by the No. 7
Tigers 56-23, Moorhead irrita-
bly fielded questions, stopping
every few seconds to bite his
tongue or adjust his visor.
Most notably, it was a
third-quarter unsportsmanlike
conduct penalty he received
that had him peeved.
“I saw what happened right
in front of my face and thought
it was a target and didn’t see the
flag thrown,” Moorhead said.
“I asked ‘Where’s the flag?’ and
apparently he didn’t like how I
asked — the delivery of it.”
“I’m guessing there aren’t
many other coaches in the
league that would be called on
with that language, but that’s
just me,” he added.
Just one of a number of men-
tal lapses, Saturday’s thrashing
was a case study in MSU’s re-
cent inability to stay disciplined
in losses.
Through five games this
year, the Bulldogs currently
rank as the second-least penal-
ized team in the SEC, averaging
just 49.6 penalty yards per game
— an upgrade from last season’s
57.5-yard average.
But more pressing is MSU’s
propensity for penalties in de-
feat. In losses to Auburn and
Kansas State, the Bulldogs
compiled a combined 16 penal-
ties for 153 yards, good for an
average of eight penalties for
76.5 penalty yards per game.
Conversely, MSU averaged
just four flags and 31.7 resulting
yards in wins over Louisiana,
Southern Miss and Kentucky
this year.
It’s also worth noting the
Bulldogs’ inability to stay disci-
plined away from home. In last
year’s road defeats at Kentucky,
Florida and Alabama, MSU av-
eraged 9.3 penalties for 78 yards
— both of which eclipsed its av-
erage numbers for home losses.
“The first and biggest thumb
goes back to me,” Moorhead
said. “Myself and our coaches
got to make sure we’re putting
kids in position to be success-
ful with the calls; we’ve got to
make sure we’re out there mak-
ing plays.”
At present, Saturday’s loss at
Auburn proved consistent with
MSU’s penalty-prone road trips
of seasons past.
In all, the Bulldogs were
tagged for nine penalties that
accounted for 70 yards. And
while those numbers aren’t
entirely abysmal, MSU found
a knack for finding flags in key
moments.
Junior safety C.J. Morgan,
who helped the Bulldogs record
five penalties before earning a
first down, picked up a personal
foul for an egregiously late hit
out of bounds on Auburn’s sec-
ond drive.
Later in the second quarter,
junior linebacker Erroll Thomp-
son was ejected after earning a
targeting foul for lowering the
crown of his helmet on Auburn
receiver Seth Williams, extend-
ing the Tigers’ drive after hav-
ing notched a third-down stop.
Auburn scored touchdowns
on both drives.
And though MSU’s defense
accounted for 46 of the team’s
70 total penalty yards, the of-
fense was far from innocent.

NFL suspends Raiders linebacker Burfict for rest of season

hit on Indianapolis Colts
tight end Jack Doyle, the
most severe punishment
in NFL history for an on-
field infraction.
Burfict will miss the
final 12 games of the sea-
son and any playoff games
for “repeated violations of
unnecessary roughness
rules.” He has been sus-
pended three times in his
career for hits violating
the league’s player safety
rules.
Burfict has the right
under the collective bar-
gaining agreement to
appeal the punishment
in the next three days.
He had one of his previ-
ous suspensions reduced
from five games to three
games on an appeal in
2017.
It’s that history that led
to the most severe punish-
ment the NFL has handed
out when it comes to play-
er safety, topping the five
games Tennessee’s Albert
Haynesworth got in 2006
for kicking and stomping
on Cowboys center Andre
Gurode’s face, leading to
30 stitches.
Burfict had served two
three-game suspensions
already in his career and
had been warned about
severe punishment for fu-
ture infractions.
“There were no miti-
gating circumstances on
this play,” NFL Vice Pres-
ident of football opera-
tions Jon Runyan said in a
letter to Burfict announc-
ing the suspension. “Your

accountability measures.
However, you have con-
tinued to flagrantly abuse
rules designated to pro-
tect yourself and your

The suspension is
without pay, costing Burf-
ict more than $1.1 million
in salary and per game ac-
tive roster bonuses.
Burfict was flagged
for unnecessary rough-
ness and ejected from the
Raiders’ game against the
Colts on Sunday after a
blow to Doyle’s head early
in the second quarter.
“I just got tackled,”
Doyle said after the game.
“I’m sure it looked worse
than it was. I didn’t really
feel anything from it. My
helmet protected me.”
The Colts have now
had two players enter
the concussion protocol
following games this sea-
son — All-Pro lineback-
er Darius Leonard two
weeks ago and starting
safety Clayton Geath-
ers following Sunday’s
game. Doyle, Colts coach
Frank Reich said Monday,
showed no symptoms of a
head injury.
But Reich backed the
league’s decision.
“I was just thankful the
league took the action that
it did, and (I) support the
league and the decision,”
he said on a conference
call Monday. “I did have a
reaction yesterday. When
someone does something
like that and attacks one
of your players — that’s
just not supposed to be in
the game. Then when it’s
against one of your play-
ers, you naturally have
a reaction. I’m just glad
they did what they did
at the game and the fol-
low-up action seems very
appropriate.”
Burfict during his time
in Cincinnati was repeat-
edly suspended by the
NFL for egregious hits

Burfict then was penal-
ized for a blind-side block
against Kansas City full-
back Anthony Sherman
in the 2017 preseason
that led to a five-game
suspension that was later
reduced to three games.
Burfict was also fined
$112,000 last season for
hits on Brown and James
Conner in a game against
Pittsburgh.
Despite that history,
Burfict said after signing
with the Raiders that he
disputes accusations that
he is a “dirty” player.
“I play a physical posi-
tion, which is middle line-
backer, outside lineback-
er. That’s physical,” he
said. “I can’t go in there
playing patty-cake. If I
go out there playing pat-
ty-cake, then I’m going
to be getting run over. I
have 300-pound linemen,
300-plus pound linemen
coming at me, trying to
block me. If I play soft,
then I’m not doing my
job. I could see if I played
quarterback or kicker or
punter, then yeah you can
be, I wouldn’t say soft, but
you know what I’m say-
ing. I play a physical posi-
tion to where I have to put
my jockstrap on right, put
my shoes on right, put my
cleats on right and come
out ready to play physi-
cal.”
Burfict also was sus-
pended for the first four
games in 2018 for violat-
ing the league’s policy on
performance-enhancers.
The loss of Burfict
will be a big blow to the
Raiders defense. He was
brought in because of his
extensive knowledge of
coordinator Paul Guen-
ther’s scheme and had a
key role as captain and
signal caller to make sure
Oakland ran it properly.
Tahir Whitehead took
over as signal caller after
Burfict left the game.
The Raiders arrived
in London on Monday to
prepare for an upcoming
game against the Chica-
go Bears, and players and
coaches were unavailable
for comment.

Angels fire manager Ausmus after just one season

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Manager Brad
Ausmus has been fired by the Los Ange-
les Angels after just one difficult season
in charge.
Angels general manager Billy Ep-
pler announced the decision to move on
swiftly from Ausmus on Monday, a day
after they finished 72-90 for the fran-
chise’s worst record since 1999.
The dismissal of Ausmus immedi-
ately sparked speculation that former
Angels bench coach Joe Maddon, who
parted ways with the Chicago Cubs one
day earlier, will return to the franchise
where he spent three decades of his ca-
reer.
A candidate of Maddon’s magnitude
would be an obvious reason for such an
abrupt change of plan by the Angels,
who have had four consecutive losing
seasons for the first time since 1993-96.
Maddon was with the Angels when Arte
Moreno bought the ballclub in 2003, and
the two have a cordial relationship.
Ausmus got a three-year contract last
October as the Angels’ hand-picked re-
placement for Mike Scioscia, who spent
19 years on the Angels’ bench and won
their only World Series title in 2002.
After Ausmus was let go by the De-
troit Tigers in late 2017 following four
seasons as their manager, he spent the
2018 season as a special adviser to Ep-
pler. But that knowledge didn’t trans-
late to wins as the 17th manager in the
franchise history of the Angels, who re-
gressed in his sole season with a poor
pitching staff and several underper-
forming position players.
Beset by injuries and tragedy, Aus-
mus’ team struggled for nearly every
month of the summer, except for a burst
of inspired play through its grief over the
midseason death of pitcher Tyler Skaggs
in a hotel room in Texas. Only five ma-
jor league regulars made it through the
season without going on the injured list.
Eppler and Ausmus didn’t immedi-
ately return phone messages seeking
comment.
The 50-year-old Ausmus was unable
to stop the Angels’ streak of five straight
non-playoff seasons and four straight
losing records during the prime of AL
MVP favorite Mike Trout’s career. De-
spite the majors’ ninth-largest payroll
this season at $164.4 million and the ide-
al franchise cornerstone in Trout, Los
Angeles has made the playoffs just once
in the past decade and hasn’t won a post-
season game since 2009.
Rumors began to swirl about Ausmus’
job security last week while Maddon’s
future was being debated in Chicago.
The Cubs’ only World Series-winning
manager of the past century decided to
leave the club by mutual agreement last
week.
The 65-year-old Maddon spent 31
years in the Angels organization, start-
ing as a catcher and logging lengthy
assignments as a minor league manag-
er and a major league assistant coach,
along with two stints as the Angels’ in-
terim manager. He was Scioscia’s bench
coach for six seasons, winning a World
Series ring along the way, before he left
to manage the Tampa Bay Rays.
Ausmus on Sunday acknowledged he
had heard the rumors linking Maddon,
who has said he still owns a home near
Anaheim, to an Angels return.
Ausmus was hired to provide a fresh
voice to the Angels after nearly two de-
cades under Scioscia while incorporat-
ing new-school strategies in analytics
and player management. He did all of
those things while maintaining an ap-
parently strong relationship with Trout
and his other players, but the results
never showed up.
The Angels went 7-18 in September
and finished 37 games behind the AL
West champion Houston Astros.
