Introducción: Skimming –Scanning
Skimming and Scanning Strategies
• Skimming and scanning are reading techniques that use rapid eye
movement and keywords to move quickly through text for slightly
different purposes.
• By knowing these strategies, it helps readers to be more effective
and flexible.
Skimming and Scanning Strategies
TIEMPO: 10 MINUTOS
Skimming is used to get the most important information or the gist of a text.
Skimming is looking for general or main ideas and the reader only
concentrates on the purpose of reading. Hence, reader’s understanding is
reduced because they do not read everything. This however will not hamper
their reading comprehension since he/she already understood the main
ideas of the reading material.
When skimming, we read the entire text and take note of different
components such as headings, pictures and charts. However, it is not
essential to understand every word to understand the overall meaning of a
text.
Skimming
• Skimming is especially useful when there are few headings or graphic elements
to gain an overview of a text.
• Use skimming in previewing (reading before you read), reviewing (reading after
you read), determining the main idea from a long selection you don't wish to
read, or when trying to find source material for a research paper.
Cuando usar Skimming
There are many cues or indicators to watch out for when skimming a text.
• start at the beginning of the text and skim your eyes over the text very quickly
• you might read a few words of every paragraph, perhaps the first and last
sentences. Reading topic sentences (usually the first sentence of a paragraph)
can be an effective way of understanding the main idea of a paragraph.
• the aim is to get an overview of the key words and points in a text without all
the details.
How to use Skimming

Scanning
• The essential part in scanning is that the reader needs to be able to grasp the
content and know the structure of the materials he/she scan. Once he/she
established that, it will be easier for the reader to locate the specific
information needed.
Scanning

Algunos ejemplos:

• Ojear /echar un vistazo a la lista de películas u
horario de clases
• Leer los resultados de una búsqueda de internet
How to use Scanning
Scanning involves scanning your eyes over part of a text to find specific
pieces of information:
• start scanning the text by allowing your eyes (or finger) to move
quickly over a page.
• as soon as your eye catches an important word or phrase that you were
searching for, stop reading
• you then slow down to read the relevant section more thoroughly.
