Topic: 11th Chapter of the Holy Qurán (Surah Hud)

Introduction:
The Holy Qurán is the last book of guidance from Allah Almighty. All the necessary principles
of faith, spirituality character which are required for success in this world and in the hereafter are
given in this glorious Qur’an. To achieve eternal success we must follow the principles of
success given by the Holy Qurán. To know these principles one has to deeply study the Holy
Qurán. I have studied Surah Hud to derive these principles of life from it.

Surah “Hud” is a Makki surah, which consists of 123 Ayat/verses. It is present in the Parah 11 &
12 of Holy Qur’an. It has 10 Rukus. If we consider its theme deeply, we come to the conclusion
that it was revealed during the same period as Surah Yunus and most probably followed it
immediately. This Surah was named after Prophet Hud (A.S) who was sent to the people of
A’Ad.

Major themes(s):
The main theme of Surah “Hud” as under:
a) The Surah gives us the message that Allah is the Provider and Sustainer of all creatures.
b) This Surah tells that The Qur'an is the pure Message of Allah and is not forged by the Prophet
(PBUH).
c) This Surah describes Story of the Prophet Nuh (A.S) and his people.
d) The Surah tells the stories of Prophets Hud, Saleh, Lut and Shu'aib's (Peace be upon them all)
addresses to their people and consequences of their people's rejecting their messages
e) This Surah tells us that Allah has given freedom of choice to mankind (whether to believe or
not to believe).

Some Significant Principles of Surah Hud:

Surah Hud has many principles of Faith in it and describes faith very brilliantly. The Surah deals
with the same subject as Surah Yunus, that is, invitation to the Message, admonition and
warning, with this difference that the warning is sterner. It explains the struggle of many
Prophets and the response of people. It equally emphasizes on Faith, spirituality and character.
This Surah contains many verses from which we derive principles for our guidance in today’s
life. These guiding principles are related to Faith, Spirituality and character. Some of them are as
follows:
Principles of Success related to Faith:

1. Allah is the Only Worthy of Worship

Belief in Tauheed is the basic requirement for success. This is the reality of this universe that the
universe can only work if there is one God and it is Allah (swt). To be successful we must
worship Allah Almighty alone and should not make any partners with him. This verse of Surah
Hud tells us that we should only worship Allah swt if we want to be succesfull in this world and
hereafter and that prophet (PBUH) is only here to guide us:

" [Through a messenger, saying], "Do not worship except Allah . Indeed, I am to you from
Him a warner and a bringer of good tidings,"1

2. Qur’an is the word of Allah SWT

Qur’an is book of guidance and instruction from Allah Almighty. It is the reviver of faith and the
healer of hearts. Qur’an is not the word of Prophet (PBUH) as the pagans of Makkah said but it
is the word of Allah Almighty. In the following verse of Surah Hud, Allah challenges the pagans
to prove there saying that Quran is not the Word of Allah and Allah replies them:

“Or do they say, "He invented it"? Say, "Then bring ten surahs like it that have been invented
and call upon [for assistance] whomever you can besides Allah , if you should be truthful."2

Principles of success related to spirituality:

3. Observance of Salah is the key to success

The observance of Salah is one of the keys to success. Salah freshens one’s faith and increases it.
The observer of Salah has a different attitude towards the things happening in his life than a non-
observer. This verse of Surah Hud tells us to establish Salah throughout Day and Night time by
time because it stops a person from doing bad deeds and obviously when a person stop doing bad
deeds he starts doing the good ones which ultimately lead him to success:

1
Surah Hud (11:02)
2
Surah Hud (11:13)
“And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed,
good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.”3

Principles of Success related to Character:

4. Patience is rewarded by Allah SWT

Patience is one of most beautiful characters of a true believer. Patience is whenever one
encounters a problem in his life or faces a big hardship, he does not lose hope or say bad words
from his tongue but instead he says that Allah has made him and he will go back to him. Today,
patient is not often seen in the society that is why we are struggling to build a good community.
Being patient at hard times is very difficult and this is the reason it has a very big reward. In the
following verse of Surah Hud, Allah tell the Holy Prophet (PBUH) to be patient towards the
attitude of pagans because Allah is with the one who is patient and Allah rewards the one who is
patient:

“And be patient, for indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do
good.”4.

5. Righteous deeds bring ultimate success

Piety is the one of the best forms of character and along with the fear of Allah it is the thing
which increases the status of a person in society and most importantly in front of Allah
Almighty. There will be a high reward for this kind of people in the hereafter. These ayahs of the
Surah describe that these people will be successful and they will get the best of the rewards for
their good deeds.

“Except for those who are patient and do righteous deeds; those will have forgiveness and
great reward.”5

3
Surah Hud (11:114)
4
Surah Hud (11:115)
5
Surah Hud (11:11)
Conclusion:
This Surah is a beautiful chapter of the Holy Qur’an. It puts great emphasis on Tauheed and
other articles of faith Spirituality and Character. Stories of the prophet and the morals to learn
from the people before us. Principles of faith have been discussed as to be successful in this
world and in the hereafter one has to believe only in Allah, Belief in Qur’an as the word of
Allah. Observers of Salah will be successful. Patience is the best form of character that one can
have and Allah will reward us if we are patient and in the end doing righteous deeds will take us
to Jannah and be successful. All of these principles from this Surah brilliantly guide us to how
can be successful in both worlds. So to succeed we must apply all of these principles in our daily
life. May Allah give us the power to do it. Ameen!
