Substitute Lesson Plan

1. Attached are seating charts for periods Advisory and ALL Periods
2. Please read the following to all periods:

Greetings to the Glorious 8th grade Bears,

While I hope to learn much at our conference, being away from all of you for this long is not my
favorite. I am greatly looking forward to your capable substitute and our T.A’s. raving about your
responsible and productive behavior throughout the week.”
3. Class Rules:

- ‘Honor yourself and everyone else’

- ‘Be truthful in all words and deeds’

- ‘Handle your possessions only’

- Do what’s expected, when expected’

- ‘Use no profanity or offensive language’

c. Students must raise their hand to request everything; tissue, trash can, bathroom

d. Only dismiss one student every 15 minutes, and none the first and last 15 minutes of class

e. Students may consume only water in the classroom.

f. Uniforms: Students should only be wearing the school vest or cardigan as their outer garment, and all
should have their shirts tucked in and ties on. Instruct students wearing anything else to remove it and
keep it off in the building.
4. Advisory

- Record attendance

- Attached Is the seating chart, which you can use to keep track of attendance (the office will give you a
separate sheet that must be returned.

- Also attached is the Advisory Lesson Plan; note that Wednesdays students meet in the gym at the
beginning of the day, and they will be in the gym at the end of the day for the Club Fair.
5. Tuesday, Periods 2 & 4, 01 Oct 2019

- Record attendance

- Collect homework; while students are taking their quiz, note on the seating chart who submitted their
homework, then return it too them when the quiz is over.

- Quiz: The quiz is sorted so that at each table there’s a different version. Allow 12 minutes; voice level
‘0’ = no talking.

- Instruction: Estimate Roots, Glencoe Vol. 1 pg. 82-85

a. Students read silently the description at the top of pg. 82 (2 min); entertain questions.

b. Examples 1 & 2:

- students study it silently (2 min each). Entertain questions, use one of the large whiteboards to
demonstrate as needed. 

c. students do the ‘Got it’ exercises (5-7) min; share solutions and answer questions.

— students were informed to have only their notebook, textbook, and pencil; students without a
textbook must share with a neighbor. 

- Instruction: Compare Real Numbers, Glencoe Vol 1. pg. 90-92

a. Students read silently the description at the top of pg. 90 (2 min); entertain questions.

b. Students Study Examples 1, 2, and 3 (4 minutes); entertain questions

c. Students complete ‘Got It?’ exercises (3 min); share solutions and entertain questions.

- Instruction: Order Real Numbers, Glencoe Vol 1. pg. 91

a. Students study silently the description at the top of pg. 91 (2 min); entertain questions.

b. Students Study Examples 4, 5, & 6 (6-8minutes); entertain questions. Remind students they’ll need
calculators to get accurate values for some numbers when they do them for homework.

c. Students complete ‘Got It?’ exercises (8 min); share solutions and entertain questions. Use your
smartphone calculator to determine the irrational square roots for students to use.

- Practice: Practice Set 05

a. Distribute the provided Practice Set, which is also their homework due next week. They shall work
on it for the remainder of the period.
6. Wednesday (periods 1-3-5) and Thursday (periods 2-4), 02-03 Oct 19

- Record attendance

- Real-World Link, pg. 51(20 minutes)

— Students engage and complete each question. The expectation when working cooperatively is
students keep their conversation with their table only, at a volume only heard by their table, and only on
the math!

— Share the solutions and elicit some responses to share out.

- Instruction: Scientific Notation, pg. 52

a. Students study silently description at the top of page 52 (2 minutes); entertain questions.

b. Students study silently Examples 1 & 2; entertain questions

c. Students complete ‘Got it’ exercises a - c(3 min); share solutions and entertain questions

d. Students study silently examples 3 &4 (3 minutes); entertain questions

e. Students complete ‘Got it’ exercises d through f (3 minutes); entertain questions

f. Read the introduction of Example 5 to students; students study silently the response (3 minutes);
entertain questions. 

g. Students do Got It exercise ‘g’(2 minutes); entertain questions, elicit responses and share solution. 

- Practice Set 05: Engage as previous for the remainder of the period. Students who don’t have theirs
can grind through the exercises in the text.
7. Friday, All Periods (Minimum Day), 04 Oct 2019

- Advisory is 15 minutes; record attendance, attend to announcements.

- Instruction: Exploration Analysis

a. Distribute one page per table in each period (1 through 5) of the images of planets and a K-class
star.

b. Distribute one page of Analysis questions to each table.

c. Instruct students to resolve the questions working cooperatively in at their tables. Inform them some
of these questions will be part of their regular quiz on Monday-Tuesday. Also Inform students these will
be posted on the Weebly.
