Keynote Speaker
Matt de la Peña
Matt de la Peña is the New York Times bestselling, Newbery Medal
winning author of seven young adult novels (including Mexican
WhiteBoy, We Were Here and Superman: Dawnbreaker) and five picture
books (including Last Stop on Market Street and Love). Matt received his
M.F.A. in creative writing from San Diego State University and his B.A.
from the University of the Pacific, where he attended school on a full
athletic scholarship for basketball. In 2019 Matt was given an honorary
doctorate from UOP. Matt de la Peña currently lives in Brooklyn, New
York, with his family. He teaches creative writing and visits schools and
colleges throughout the country. Matt de la Pena's keynote address will discuss his
personal journey from reluctant reader to writer, focusing on the barriers many working
class boys and young men encounter in the acquisition of literacy. Mr. de la Pena's
presentation will focus on the transformative nature of literature and the power of
education to impact social emotional development.

Welcome to the County-Wide Institute Day! The DeKalb
Regional Office of Education in partnership with participating
districts has planned this event with the purpose of providing
high quality professional development and expanding
professional relationships across the county. We are pleased to
have the DeKalb County districts of Genoa-Kingston, Indian
Creek, Hiawatha, Sycamore, Sandwich, and Somonauk as well as
Kishwaukee Education Consortium join in the professional development. We also welcome
Paw Paw school district as our guests. We thank Sycamore High School for the venue and
hospitality. Thanks to the districts and outside agencies who encouraged their staff to
submit proposals and serve as presenters today. The presenters are tremendously
appreciated for their planning and courage to serve as leaders. We would not have an event
without them! We are also indebted to the work of the Institute Planning Committee.
Lastly, thanks to you for attending today and getting the most out of your experience!
