Introduction
The age group of this essay would be 6 years old to 8 years old
with the mixture of boys and girls. In this essay, I will include
the contents of why I chose this topic to teach; how I structured
the lesson and explain the teaching stages step by step; what
kind of activities contribute to this class and how these will be
achieved; what other activities could be used in this class; what
can be done in the class if the activities don’t work in the way I
have planned; At the end of the essay, I will write extra
thoughts and ideas that can be applied to support the lesson
plan.

Why this topic was chosen

(Family and friends)
The reason why I chose this topic is because it teaches children
the common words of what they can normally see in their real
life. ‘Family and friends’ should be an important part of daily
life, which the students can understand well and use the target
language to produce the sentences when teacher put them
together.
As the students are all complete beginners, and they’ve learned
some words related to travel vocabulary from a previous lesson,
this topic was chosen appropriately. I would like to expand the
knowledge in this class, not only teach them the new words but
also have them use the target lexis to produce the language.

By teaching students these family and friends words and also

the structure, if the students stay with their family or friends,
they could have a talk with them for promoting emotion, they
also can introduce them to others, it’s better for students to
know more about their life.

Potential problems
They can be fairly boisterous and sometimes prefer playing
rather than studying. With the students who are all complete
beginners, there could be some potential problems in
pronouncing the words and understanding the grammar well as
they don’t have too much exposure to English. Although they
have already finished four English lessons, they still cannot
recognize the letters well.

Lesson Structure
The methodology was used in this lesson is Presentation,
Practice and Produce (PPP). The benefits of using this method
are as follows:
1. It scaffolds the learning into smaller chunks.
2. It is easy for students to stay focus on class.
3. Contributes to internalizing structures in long term memory.

The lesson structure stage by stage

Pre-class
Before the class starts, teachers would be better in the
classroom in advanced. Then make sure all the materials are
taken to the classroom, the classroom chairs need to be
arranged appropriately. The computer in the classroom should
be turned on and also the projector. Check everything is
well-prepared.

Greeting and Warmer.

Greeting can make students feel a sense of belonging to the
class.
Warmer is good way for reviewing the knowledge they have
learned before. The teacher can use this way to check students
how much they remember from the previous lessons.
Presentation1
This stage is mainly about the new lexis which the students
need to be learned in this class. As they are young learners and
not familiar with alphabet, using pictures to teach would be
more appealing and easy for them to learn new words. Because
they have already known the colors from previous lessons, it is
a good way to check their knowledge again. For checking the
meaning of new words, some questions can be asked: He is my
mother, yes or no? No. She is my mother, yes!

After presenting the new words, students will read the words
after what teacher says. As they are young learners and they
like being funny in the class, the game can be used for drilling.
Touch colors is a game for drilling words, teacher asks all the
students one color, they need to touch it in the classroom and
speak( if it is five, all the class should say this word five times
and use hands to cover the mouth immediately. The students
will get funny about that.

Practice1
In this stage, students will use the language they have learned
in presentation stage to play the game. As the class like playing
games, with the game “Catching cards” every student has the
chance to speak and to listen to the teacher say the words, then
repeat and choose the right one.

Presentation2
In this presentation, students will be introduced structure of
‘Who is he/she? He/She is my…’, as they have learned family
and friends, they know how to fill the blanks; the chief purpose
of this stage is having them use the words they have learned to
apply in the sentence. So each student will think and say the
sentences of the power point on the board.

Practice 2
In case that the students will forget about the structure,
teacher will show the slides on the board, when students are
doing the activity, they can say the sentences more fluently.

Production
In this stage, students are able to produce the language by
using the target language of this class, and have opportunity to
produce the language more freely. Because the time is limited,
students can correct each other, for example, if some students
say ‘She is my father’, they can correct to show that “She is a
girl, he is a boy.” Before playing the game, the teacher needs to
find a strong student of the class to demo with, because
choosing a strong student will make the activity clearer. After
the demonstration, the teacher will check the student
understanding of the activity. For example, ask them ‘what can I
ask?’ can I ask ‘How are you?’, ‘what can I write (use the action
to show students what the meaning of writing) on the
paper?’‘Can I write He is my mother’? Or ‘He is my father’?

Clean up
In this final stage the students can make sure that everything is
put away and they write their homework in their student book.
They would also copy the structure in their student book to
review the language they have learned at home.
Activities and what they achieve.

Warmer
In this part, it’s good to review the words by playing a game; it
can help students remember the words they have learned
before and have some fun with it, which will create a nice
atmosphere for the class.

Presentation1 and Practice1

When teach the new vocabulary of this lesson, teacher uses the
flashcards with the picture sides to students, write the
structures on the board with a family picture to help them
understand. Point one of picture and ask students concept
questions (He is my father, do you know what is father?) it will
help students remember and make them feel more comfortable.
By showing the other sides of the flashcards can let students
recognize the spelling of the words.

Playing Touch colors can help students repeat the words and
thy can have fun with that.

Catching cards is a great game to have the students practice

their listening and pronunciation. They will know teamwork is
important.

Presentation2 and Practice 2

Display the dialogue on the board will help students be familiar
with the grammar and written form. Have students read
sentence by sentence is a kind of drilling and will get them
familiar with the sentence form. The blanks will help them to
think of the words by themselves which can give the teacher an
opportunity to do an individual assessment.
The practice activity will help students say the structure more
fluently and build a foundation for the production stage.

Production
Students will produce the language in this stage, for introducing
the family and friends. Students can get a chance to show
themselves and improve their speaking, pronunciation and
writing. Teacher will also get an opportunity to walk around to
monitor students’ language production and correct them.

More possible activities

Students can play ‘Sticky ball’ in practice 2 which can reinforce
their produce the structures. Teacher take one sticky ball and
make cards 2 lines, 3or4 cards each line, then draw a circle on
the floor, choose two students every time, one of them needs
to stand in the circle. Thirdly, he/she throw the sticky ball and
they can have a talk when the ball drops on one of cards:
“Who is he/she?”
“He/She is my…”

What’s missing: Teacher will put all the flashcards on the floor
and have students close their eyes and take one away, and then
have students tell the teacher which word is missing. It will help
students to practice vocabulary.

What if something goes wrong?

Presentaion1
If they get bored with the presentation stage, teacher should
make the game more exciting, for example, when teaching new
words, teacher could use ‘pass the cards slow or fast’ to get
students’ attention.

Practice1
If students just catch the cards without saying the words,
teacher should demo the game clearly and tell students they
need to say the words when they touch it. Who says the words
first will get one point for their team. Make the game more
competitive.
Presentaion2
Students could have problems in using the wrong preposition
they probably don’t know the difference between ‘he’ and ‘she’,
teacher should use high voice to correct.

Production
Students could easily speak Chinese in this activity and some of
them use the wrong structure. Teacher should be strict with the
students and walk around all the time to monitor them.

Extra thoughts and ideas

Students can do ‘Boogle’ activity which will help them to
practice their writing skill.
The homework can be a grammar written work, for example,
use the family and friend’s vocabulary they have learned to
write an easy paper.

Conclusion
Students will review family and friends vocabulary and learn
new structure to produce the language. Students will practice
listening, speaking skills in this lesson. In each stage will come
with games or activities, which will make them happy during
the class.
