Advanced Optical Networks:

A Quick Perspective and Issues

Abstract

Advancements in communications technology and communications services have

triggered a global voracious appetite for bandwidth. Yesterday, downloading an
image over the Internet, even if it took several minutes, was exciting; today, one or
two mere seconds are annoying. Yesterday, accessing scanty news from a distant
country by clicking the “mouse” was a challenge; today, broadcasting the “news” as
they happen with real-time video is expected, even in remote and ragged areas.
Contrasting today’s and yesterday’s advancements can go on and on. Yet, today’s
advancements are made possible because of the ever-shrinking electronics, the

increasing processing power at lower cost making possible new services to emerge
allowing for mobility and easy access and because of optical technology that enable
optical networks to transport over a single strand of fiber an unprecedented huge
aggregate bandwidth. In this talk, we take a quick tour in advanced optical networks,
their goodness and their challenges.
