UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES IN THE VISAYAS TACLOBAN COLLEGE

Integrated Biology
Exercise 1. SCIENTIFIC OBSERVATION
Objectives:
1. To be able to note down parts and corresponding functions of a chosen animal.
2. To be able to describe the behavior of the chosen animal and its relationship with
other organism/s.
(Note: This is an individual activity to be performed during your respective class period.)
Your final observation and/or answers should be written in black ink on your sheets
(named) of bondpaper without any erasures or superimpositions.
Methods:
1. Proceed to a designated area where you can expect to find your chosen animal.
Choose only one animal that could easily be observed for about 30 minutes. Avoid
choosing those that could easily fly away at great distances like birds.
2. On any piece of paper or notebook, note down all aspects of your chosen animal such
as its color, texture, size (in cm), and odor if possible. In observing the animal’s
behavior, you may encounter some obstacles. Under no circumstance are you
supposed to TOUCH the ANIMAL. Make sure that you do not do anything that could
bring about any abnormal behavior.
3. Based on your individual simultaneous observation, create a timeline of events after
each and every 2 to 5 minutes interval (maximum observation of 30 minutes only).
Present this in a tabular form, make two columns: 1st column = for time in minutes &
2nd column = the particular event/s (observations).
4. Make a rough sketch (in pencil) of your chosen specimen and label your illustration.
Note: If you plan to take photo(s) of your organism make sure you have a scale (e.g.
coin, ruler, etc.) adjacent to the animal that could serve as reference re its dimensions.
5. Make a research at the library pertaining to some of the characteristics of your
specimen (or its ‘relatives’) particularly on its morphology, reproduction, habitat and
origin.
Finally, make a short composition based on your own knowledge/experience(s)
about the animal you’ve chosen by answering ANY of the following: (Make a draft first
before finalizing.) Please write legibly and more importantly in a grammatically correct
way.
a. Is the animal useful or harmful to humans? Expound.
b. What other organism/s was your chosen organism interacting with? Discuss.
Cite (observe CORRECT citation rules) all the references you used for this
exercise.
