NAIDOC Week Celebrations
B=" NAIDOC stands for
National Aborigines
and Islanders Day
Observance
Committee. Its origins
can be traced to the
emergence of
Aboriginal groups in the 1920s which sought to
increase awareness in the wider community of the
status and treatment of
Indigenous Australians,
NAIDOC Week is held in
the first full week of July.
Itis a time to celebrate
Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander history,
culture and achievements
and is an opportunity to
recognise the
contributions that
Indigenous Australians make to our country and our
Father’s Day
On Friday Ist September Rathdowne Place hosted its
very first Father’s Day Pub Trivia event. The afternoon
was filled with laughter, hardworking minds and
healthy competition. A big congratulations to our
winning team “Silverchair”, winning by just one point
in the end. We would like to thank all who donated to
the event, as we managed to raise $250; all of which
will be donated to Flagstaff Crisis Accommodation.
We would also like to thank our wonderful volunteers
Lydea, Dan and Jenny who assisted in making the
rent such a success. Keep an eye out for the next
society.
In recognition of

trivia event as you won't want to miss out!
With the smell of burning sausages and steaks on a
flaming grill, the Father's Day festivities were
continued on Saturday 2nd September with the
Father's Day Bar-B-Q. We paid tribute to
grandfathers, fathers and all dads through poems,
classic dad jokes and stories prepared and performed
by both residents and staff. Our Super Special Secret

Demonstration
On the afternoon of Friday
I8th August on level four,
Lorin Jacobs leant his
expertise once more to
demonstrate how to preserve
lemons
Historically, pickling was an
affordable and practical
method of preserving lemons
for use long after their season
and far away from where they
are grown. Pieces of pickled lemon may be washed before
using to remove any surface salt, or blanched to remove
more of the salt and bring out the natural mild
sweetness, They may then be sliced, chopped, or minced
as needed for the texture of the dish, The rind may be
used with or without the pulp. Preserved lemon is the
key ingredient in many Moroccan dishes such as tagines.

In February 2017 Rathdowne Place warmly
welcomed Frank to our Precinct and to our
community,
Frank studied at London University where he
obtained his degrees in Science including a PHD.
Upon leaving university he was preparing to head
to Germany when his professor mentioned that a
job was opening at a new university in Australia
Monash University.
Being a successful candidate, Frank came to
Australia and began his career as a Junior Lecturer
in Theoretical Chemistry. He eventually worked his
way up to quite a prestigious position as an
In Cambodian cuisine, it is used in dishes such as Ngam
nguy, a chicken soup with whole preserved lemons, They
are often combined in various ways with olives,
artichokes, seafood, veal, chicken, and rice.
Lorin preserved eight large jars and has continued adding
more lemons to each jar over the last few weeks. The jars
will be delivered to each floor shortly and the floors will
be informed when they are ready for use by residents,
staff and family.
Each jar contains a number of lemons, an abundance of
salt, some lemon juice, cinnamon, star anise, black
peppercorns and bay leaves.
Associate Professor. Frank loved teaching young
minds and speaks with a sense of pride about his
work. Aside from this position, Frank is also quite
thrilled to mention that he was the Union President
of the University for many years~ he was the
president for over 2000 people.
Though Frank loved lecturing, he decided to make a
change and became a part of the environmental
movement. He says “lecturing in theoretical
chemistry for 40 years was too brain consuming”,
Following his departure from Monash University,
Frank commenced working at the Commonwealth
Scientific and Industrial Relations Organisation,
otherwise known as CSIRO. Frank continued his
work for CSIRO up until around the start of 2017.
Frank was one of the leading campaigners and
scientific experts to ban led from petrol in the late
70s.
Frank has become a regular face at many of our
outings and activities; he especially loves attending
Happy Hour, the Kindergarten visits, the afternoon
aid himself,
movies and various art galleries. As hi
he will ‘join in with
whatever is going on”.

Welcome Spring! Finally it looks like we are getting
some warmth in the air.
I would also like to extend a warm welcome to all new
residents of our Aged Care Facility and to all staff that
have recently joined our team. I hope you have all
settled into your new environments.
Since our last newsletter we have had some significant
announcements that I would like to share with you all.
Firstly Kim Miller, Clinical Operations Manager, will
be leaving Rathdowne Place in January 2018, to take
up an exciting opportunity with Australian Unity's
Quality and Risk team. Kim has been a fantastic
clinician and manager for Rathdowne Place and we
will surely miss her.
Also more sad news with Michelle Garita leaving
Rathdowne Place for greener pastures on the 27th
October 2017, taking up an opportunity to build the
new Business School for Australian Unity. Michelle
has been instrumental in adapting our safety culture,
building the Community Development department
and opening ‘The Residences’.
Lam grateful to them both for their outstanding
contribution to Rathdowne Place, so please join me in
congratulating them on their new positions within the
company.
Asa result we have made changes to our Senior
Leadership Team. Moving into the role of Clinical
Operations Manager will be Jade McGaw. Jade has
been with Rathdowne Place since it opened and has an
in depth knowledge of our residents and systems. She
will be invaluable to the clinical team. Gregor Poole
will move into the Care Manager role permanently.
Gregor has been our Care Manager over the weekends
and will again bring significant care experience to this
Christmas in July
role, Both Gregor and Jade will start their new roles in
January 2018.
Replacing Michelle will be Avinash (Avi) Vasudevan
into the Client Services Manger of The Residences. Avi
comes to Rathdowne Place with extensive client
services experience, predominantly in the Hotel
Industry.
I wish all chree managers well in their new roles.
In October we will again hold our Safety Month
activities, which will culminate into our “Safety
Games” theme. This will take place during Safety
Week from Monday 23rd of October to Friday 27th of
October. Last year was a great success with staff and
residents all getting involved in the festivities.
Finally, our three yearly accreditation will take place
in November this year. We have been given our dates
of the 20th and 2ist of November. The process entails a
visit from the five accreditors from the Australian
Aged Care Quality Agency, who will review all 44
outcomes over the four key standards of:
Standard One: Management systems, staffing and
organisational development
Standard Two: Health and personal care
Standard Three: Care recipient lifestyle
Standard Four: Physical environment and safe systems
We are looking forward to this process, and will keep
you all updated in the coming weeks of the
procedures that will be taking place during the
accreditation process.
Again a big welcome to all of our new residents and
staff to the Rathdowne Place family.
Best regards,
Gavin Young
On Friday 28th July, Rathdowne Place celebrated Christmas in July with a
delicious lunch expertly made by our catering team and handmade bon
bons made by residents and the Community Development team. The festive
lunch would not have been the success it was without the excellent work
from Lorin Jacobs and his team. A big thank you for the hard work put in
by all staff and residents to make it a meaningful event.Steptember Challenge
For the month of September, the residents, staff and
families of Rathdowne Place took part in Steptember,
anational campaign which raises awareness for
cerebral palsy. The aim was to complete as many
steps as possible for the month. To celebrate the
efforts of not only our winners, Level 1, but for all
who participated, we held a lovely brunch in the
courtyard on Thursday 28th September.
