EARTHQUAKE ANALYSIS
Engr. Andy Gualon
Civil Engineering Dept., SEAIT

EARTHQUAKE ANALYSIS
• Determination of structure responses (axial forces, moments, shears,
torsions, deflections/drifts, etc.) due to earthquake forces.

METHODS OF EARTHQUAKE ANALYSIS

1. Equivalent Static Force Analysis
• Dynamic earthquake forces are converted into an equivalent single static force acting
at the base of the structure (called the BASE SHEAR). Frame analysis shall be based from
the equivalent earthquake static force.

2. Dynamic Analysis
• Analysis shall be based from the dynamic effects of earthquake vibrations.

EQUIVALENT STATIC FORCE ANALYSIS

Basis: National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP) 2015 ed.
APPLICABILITY (NSCP Section 208.4.8.2)
The static lateral force procedure of Section 208.5 may be used for the
following structures:
1. All structures, regular or irregular in Occupancy Categories IV and V in
Seismic Zone 2.
2. Regular structures under 75 m in height with lateral force resistance
provided by systems listed in Table 208-11.
3. Irregular structures not more than five stories or 20m in height.
4. Structures having at flexible upper portion supported on a rigid lower
portion where both portions of the structure considered separately can be
classified as being regular.

IRREGULARITIES OF STRUCTURES
• lrregular structures have significant physical discontinuities in configuration
or in their lateral force-resisting systems
• Irregular features include, but are not limited to, those described in Tables
208-9 and 208-10.
1. Vertical Structural Irregularities (NSCP Table 208-9)
2. Horizontal Structural Irregularity (NSCP Table 208-10)
