CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM

Background of the study

Most people believe that social messaging is more of a benefit han a consequence,
but using social media can actually be harmful.Having people on their phones all day long is
not only disappointing but also damaging.

For people who are addicted to these sites , it can have harmful effect on their
lives and even their gealth. Any addiction is potentially harmful if it saps your energy away
from other activities, such as work,physical activity and offline relationships.There are
various ways that social media addicion harms your mental health.

Social media addiction is having a compulsion to use social media in excess with
attention solely on status updates or looking at people’s profiles. A study at Chicago
University says that this addiction is stronger than alcohol and cigarettes and Harvard
University says talking about yourself simulates pleasure. Go-Globe says that 2.03 billion
people use social media 18% cannot go a few hours without checking Facebook.There are
five million photos uploaded daily on Instagram and 500 million tweets a day on Twitter. It
is important to be in control of your time spent on social media or it can destroy your
physical and mental health over time.

Social networking sites became the leading way of communication even from
theother side of the world to miles away from it. These sites serve variety of services that
entertains their user all over the world. From the youngest possible user to the oldstone,
everyone keeps an eye on their own social network accounts wherein they can show to the
people their expressions about anything under the sun Student’s use of social networking
continues to creates challenges and issues for higher education professional and keeping a
breast of these challenges has proved difficult beacuase of the speed at which new
technologies are being introduced.There is evidence that higher education institutions have
taken initiatives in disclosing information about online social networking involve to their
students.According to a blogger,social networks offer the opportunity for people reconnect
with their old friends and acquaintance, make new friends,trade ideas,share content and
pictures,and many other activities.User can stay a breast of the latest global and local
development, and participate in campaigns and activites of their choice.Proffesionals and
business prospects.Student can collaborate with their peers to improve their academic
proficiency and communication skills.you can Learn about different cultures and societies
by connecting with people in othe countries.

Facebook has altered the landscape of ocial interaction, particularly among young people,
we are just now stating to see solid psychological research demonstrating both the positive
and negative,said larry professor of psychology at California state university From that the
researchers will conduct a study about the effect of social networking sites to people’s social
lifestyle or how people interact: communicate with other people.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study determines the negative effects of social media addiction to overalll heatlh
of Speaker Eugenio Perez National Agricultural School Grade 11 Computer System
Servicing-B students School Year 2019-2020.

Specially, it sought to answer the following sub-problems;

Scope and Delimination of Study

These respondents of the study is 16 to 18 years old and there are 24 students in
SPEAKER EUGENIO PEREZ NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL SCHOOL Grade 12
Computer System Servicing(CSS) School Year 2019-2020.

This study will focus on the grade 12 Computer System Servicing(CSS) students of
Speaker Eugenio Perez National Agricultural School(SEPNAS) regarding to their
perceptions as a CSS students.

This study is limited only to the CSS students in Speaker Eugenio Perez National
Agricultural School.

We conduct a researcher survey to know the percentage of students whose


experiencing addiction in Social Media.

Significant of the Study

The study wants to identify the negative effects of social media addiction to overall
health of Speaker Eugenio Perez National Agricultural School Grade 12 Computer System
Servicing-B(CSS) Students School year 2019-2020.

This study is significant in many aspects.It can benefit


students,teacher,parents,administrators researcher,future researcher.

Students.This study will help the students to clarify what are they thinking about
their strands.

Parents.This study will be beneficial to them to become aware how social media
affects the daily lives of their children.

Administrators.The impact of social media becomes real when it gets to class


preparation.

Researcher..This research will give some information to the other researcher who
conducting about the addiction of negative effect of social media.

Future researcher.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
There are terms uncommonly used in this study which are defined operationally for better
understanding.

Addiction. is a brain disorder characterized by compulsive engagement


in rewarding stimuli despite adverse consequences.

Age. the length of time that a person has lived or a thing has existed.

Breaking up.the breaking, melting, and loosening of ice in the spring.

Emotional Health. is an important part of overall health. People who are emotionally
healthy are in control of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Home. the place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or
household.

Mental. a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being.

Negative effects. is a personality variable that involves the experience of negative


emotions and poor self-concept.

Overall Health.A person's health is the condition of their body and the extent to which it is
free from illness or is able to resist illness.

Physical. relating to the body as opposed to the mind.

Social Media. is commonly defined as your ability to form meaningful relationships with
other people and interact in healthy, positive ways.

Sex. is the range of characteristics pertaining to, and differentiating


between, masculinity and femininity.
Social Health. is commonly defined as your ability to form meaningful relationships with
other people and interact in healthy, positive ways.
