Introduction
This document provides useful information about Ax-Series Print Head Variants & Option
Packs including photography, part numbers, descriptions, technical data and fitting.

Print Head Variants

Different Ax-Series Print Head Variants are recommended for different installation
applications.

Option Packs

Ax-Series Option Packs provide a flexible way to upgrade the performance of an Ax-Series
printer.

All Ax-Series Option Packs are available as a factory configured (pre-installed option) or as a
field fit upgrade kit.

There are 3 types of packs:

• Connectivity Packs - These packs provide additional connectivity sockets to the

back/side of the printer to meet a broad range of integration requirements.
• Harsh Environment Packs - These packs provide improved reliability and
performance in difficult environments, such as high humidity and dusty conditions.
• Performance Packs - These packs provide value adding capabilities to enhance the
printer. Typically these packs contain a software feature and are accompanied with
accessories in some cases.

What is the Status Pack?

The Status Pack includes a single PCBA that provides a 5-Way socket to connect a standard
beacon assembly (L014934). The Status Pack also provides a 7-Way plug to send printer
status to other external equipment.

What does it do? Why is this beneficial?

What is the Comms Pack?

The Comms Pack provides an Ethernet socket and a USB socket that can be fitted to the
Ax-Series printer to provide Ethernet and USB connections on the printer cabinet.

What does it do? Why is this beneficial?

Provides USB connection on the
printer cabinet.
Provides Ethernet connection on
the printer cabinet.
Used for transferring labels to the printer or upgrading
printer to latest software builds. Particularly useful on
the Ax150i to provide easy access to a USB connection.
Required whenever the printer is networked to Domino
Automation software or 3rd party network solutions.

How to Configure?
The Comms Pack can be ordered and fitted by an engineer on site, or the pack can be
specified as factory fitted.

What is the Extended Comms Pack?

The Extended Comms Pack adds a powered HMI socket, control port and a USB socket to
the printer cabinet.

What does it do? Why is this beneficial?

Adds an HMI port to the printer
cabinet.
Adds a control port to the
printer cabinet.
Adds a USB connection on the
printer cabinet.
Provides a 24V power supply and Ethernet
communication for a remote user interface such as a
Domino TouchPanel Type 1 or Type 2.
Enables customer equipment to turn the printer on and
off. Also enables customer equipment to monitor the
printer’s on/off status.
Used for transferring labels to the printer or upgrading
printer to latest software builds.

What is the Extended IO Pack?

The Extended IO Pack adds a 25-Way D-Sub socket and a 37-Way D-Sub socket to the
printer cabinet. The pack is suitable for Ax350i and Ax550i models. It provides a PCBA,
connectors and cabling for IO and a replacement rear panel with the seals required to
maintain the printer’s IP rating.

What does it do? Why is this beneficial?

Adds 2 user ports that increase
the printer’s IO connections.
Required for applications that require a high degree of
integration with other equipment. For example, PLC
control of label selection via external label select
functions or signals used to update or manipulate the
printed label.

What is the Positive Air Pump?

The Positive Air Pump supplies air from inside the cabinet to the print head.

What does it do? Why is this beneficial?

The Positive Air Pump takes air Pumping air into the head provides positive air pressure
from inside the printer cabinet, within the print head. This keeps the nozzle, gutter and
pumping it through to the print ink jet free from dust. It is recommended for use in high
head. dust environments.

The Positive Air Pump is also required for specific ink

factory air source.

What is the Professional Pack?

The professional printing pack extends the printing capabilities of the printer. It enables
additional print formats, label creation functions and advanced label scripting. All these
features are provided to widen the application fit of the Ax-Series.

Label segmentation Segmentation allows different areas of the label to use different text
feature: formats, stroke pitches and print heights.
A typical use of this feature is illustrated below, where an MRC is
printed followed by human readable text.

The code requires excellent drop placement to ensure it can be

scanned. This requires an HQ raster, but this will compromise the
maximum line speed. Human readable text does not require the
same level of drop placement control, therefore a faster ST raster
can be used. The benefit to the user is the print time for the entire
label is decreased when compared to using an HQ raster for the
entire label.
Lua Scripting: Advanced scripting using Lua programming language to create
special label features such as bespoke date fields and roll over times
etc.

The professional printing pack can be pre-installed onto the printer when shipped from the
factory. The pack can also be ordered separately, to enable this feature set on an installed
printer. In this case a USB stick is provided. When the USB is inserted into the printer, the

What is the Operator Assistance Pack?

The operator assistance pack is available if the customer requires automated label selection
or automated population of data within the label.

The functionality provided by the Operator Assistance Pack is designed to automate label
configuration prior to starting the production run. It is not intended as an on the fly
solution, populating and selecting labels during a production run.

What does it do? Why is this beneficial?

Automated label selection with
hand scanner:
As an alternative to using the UI to select and load
labels, a hand scanner can be attached to the printer.
The scanner is then used to select labels by scanning a
Machine Readable Code (Barcode) to select and load the
correct label stored on the printer.

A typical use will be selecting a product label based on

Automated population of data
within a label:
the SKU barcode printed on the actual product.
Using the hand scanner a Machine Readable Code
(Barcode) can be read. The read data can then
transferred into a place holder element within the
Ax-Series label. The label including the read data will be
printed when the production run commences.

A typical use case would be scanning a production code

embedded into an MRC. This code is then transferred to
the Ax printer for printing onto the product.

How to Configure?
The provided USB stick within the operator assistance pack will unlock a wizard that will
guide the user through configuration of the required solution. The hand scanner plugs into
the USB socket on the printer.

The pack can also be ordered separately, to enable this feature set on an installed printer. In
this case a USB stick is provided. When the USB is inserted into the printer, the pack can be
enabled.

Packs can also be transferred between printers.

What is the Green Pack?

The green pack provides a Peltier device which condenses and then recovers evaporated
make-up inside the printer cabinet.

New software features are also enabled to provide features that manage the power and jet
on periods of the printer.

What does it do? Why is this beneficial?

Peltier condenser: Recovers evaporated make up and passes it back in the
Make Up Module to reduce make up consumption.
Consequently, reducing consumable costs.
Auto jet off: Enables configuration of the printer to sequence off after
a specified period since the last print trigger. This
prevents wasteful make up usage whilst running the
printer when not being used in production.
Auto sleep: Allows the printer to enter a energy saving mode after a
specified amount of time.
Action for power button: The front panel power (standby) button can be used to
enter sleep mode, or power off, based user configurable
options.

How to Configure?
The green pack can be pre-installed onto the printer when shipped from the factory.

Alternatively, the green pack can be ordered to fit on site. The software features are
enabled via USB key.
