CHAPTER 1

1.1 FORMATION AND SOLUTION OF

DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION (DE)
DEFINITION
• A differential equation = equation contains derivatives of dependent
variable with respect to independent variables , either ordinary
derivatives (ODE) or partial derivatives (PDE).
dy
 y  2x
• ODE: ordinary derivatives dx
• single independent variable.
Single independent variable

u u
 y
x y
• PDE: partial derivatives
• two or more independent variables.
Two independent variable
ORDER
• Order of the highest differential equation coefficient appear in the
equation.
• First and second order differential equations.

1st order

2nd order

REVISION
SOLUTION OF DE
• If the highest derivative in an equation is order of n, the solution
involves n differentiation.
• Procedure:

1.2 INITIAL AND BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS
INITIAL VALUE PROBLEM:
• DE with subsdiary condition of unknown function, all given at same value
of independent variable.

ex: y(0) = 0, y’ (0) = 2

• This condition can also be written as:
y = 0 and y’ = 0 when x = 0

BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEM:

• DE with subsdiary condition of unknown function at more than one value of
independent variable.
ex: y(0) = 0, y’ (1) = 2

• This condition can also be written as:

y = 0 when x = 0 and y’ = 2 when x = 1
