Students are not given tablets to take home at the beginning of school. Making the transition to MS and
managing all that is new can be a lot. This is done to create a safe transition for all sixth grade students and to teach
them some responsible habits before they begin to bring their tablet home.

Students will be given a ͞blown͟ egg to take care of. They will have to demonstrate that they can be as careful of this
egg as they will of their tablet. If they have not broken or damaged their egg then they will be able to take their new
tablet home with them.

" 6th grade students will understand and demonstrate responsibility and tie this to Tablet ownership

Dear 6th Grade Parent,

Your child has brought home an egg that they must keep from being
damaged for eight school days. They will have to carry the egg from
class to class, home, and back to school. In tech class there will be
discussion about how this ties into keeping their tablets from being
damaged and things they will need to do to keep their tablet in good
condition. We ask that you take part in this to help build care for the
tablets that will be a valuable learning tool. Please sign this sheet to
indicate that the egg is safe at home. If you want to add any other
comments about the status of the egg please feel free to do so. This
helps to build a continued understanding of the responsibility on the
student͛s part if you are noticing cracks or how well they have done. Students will need to hand this in with their egg on the last day
of the project during tech class to be able to take their tablet home. If there is damage to the egg your child must go to the tech
office to fill out the necessary paperwork for the damage. This should be done as soon as possible to help build this habit. A tech
office staff member must sign the form and the student must bring the paperwork to class the last day along with their damaged egg
to receive their tablet to take home.

A tablet will not be sent home with an incomplete or missing form. All damage reports and parent signatures are
required.

Please make sure to bring this sheet to advisory and tech classes.

6th Grade Teachers!

You are lucky enough to be involved in one of the most exciting Projects in MS. This first project is called the Egg-cellent
Project. I have already given you a brief bit of information about it. I am sending you a few files, which you may find
useful in the next two weeks.

I would like everyone to remember is that students should be careful with their eggs. The occasional drop should not be
happening and should make them realize that taking care of something fragile is not easy. Any damage or drop to an egg
should be followed up with a conversation about being careful. Draw connections to the tablet that they will all soon
take home͙. And send them to the Tech Office anytime something happens.

Tablets should go home on the 24th. That gives the students 8 school days of carrying their eggs to help them prepare for
their tablets.

I will be in and out of a lot of 6th grade classes in the next days to clarify anything for you or for students.

Please be sure to read the ͚EggCellent Responsibility Unit ʹ Teachers͛ for all the details on what you need to know. The
rest is supplemental, but might be useful for you. Read them if you find you still have questions about the project.

Thank you again for participating. Your support will help this group of 6th grade students.

I am able to answer any of your Egg-cellent questions. Let me know if you need my eggs-perience.

Tomorrow our egg-cellent 6th graders will be given their tablets. The release will be more focused this year to try to
ensure that students get another consistent message about tablet care. Tomorrow during B Block, I will visit each class
that has 6th grade students in it. I will give them some advice, answer some questions, and finally announce the new
freedom & responsibility that they will have with their new tablets to attend to their learning desires.

All MS students will then have tablets with them at home. We will need to continue to re-visit care, proper use and
responsibility with our 6th graders from time to time. This group has done egg-stremely well with their eggs, but there
are still lessons to be taught.

All eggs should be collected and given to Craig (Rezac). Craig will be using the eggs in another egg-periment. ë

Thank you for all helping our students with this project. They have done very well, and I know that your support and
continuous nudging has paid off.

6th Grade Parents,

Today I had the privilege of handing out tablets to your children. Many of them enjoyed the Eggcellent
project and amazing as it sounds, many of the eggs survived! I have a few more bits of information for
you to think about and process with your child if you see the need.

1.c Access - Think about access. Will your child have access to the internet all of the time? Only
when connected with a cable to the router? Only in the living room? We encourage a work
environment at home that promotes trust, responsibility, and accountability. Given the safety
and family value concerns of some internet content, we suggest student work station
placement provide all family members a direct line of sight to their tablet monitor.
2.c ew Owners ʹ Talk about owning something that is expensive. Discuss care and how this is a
learning tool. Expect responsible use of the tablet. Take time to have your child show you what
they are learning and how it works. otice if the batteries are left drained, or if food and drinks
are near it. Label the case, batteries and the charger. If a charger, battery, or stylus is lost, it will
need to be replaced through the Tech Office.
3.c Siblings ʹ Have a conversation with your 6th grader about siblings using the machine. What is
your expectation for this? Be sure that if other children will be using it that they follow some
family rules about where and how it will be used.
4.c Internet Access ʹ If you are trying to get online at home you will need to go into the network
settings in the browsers and unselect the proxy settings that we use at school. These
adjustments will have to be made every time a student begins using their machine either here
at ASB, or at home.

I hope that you enjoy the experience of having your new Middle School student using this tablet. I am
eager to watch your children become experienced users.

Thank you,
