Plate No. 2
Cont. Bending and Shearing stress, and Notching on beams
Instruction: Answer the following problems using long size bond paper as solution sheets. Kindly present your solution
in a complete and neat way and don’t forget to write the final answer on this sheet, on the space provided beside each
problem.
Problem # 1
The beam shown in the figure supports a uniform load of 6 kN/m. The connection at point C maybe placed anywhere
along the continuous beam AD.
Problem # 2
A 100 mm x 250 mm wooden beam 3.60 m. long was designed to carry a uniform load o “W” kN/m at the left end and
increasing to 3W kN/m at the right end of the simply supported beam. Neglecting the weight of the beam.
a. Compute the loacation of the maximum moment from the left end of the beam._________________
b. Compute the value of “W” kN/m if the allowable bending stress is 12.4 MPa._______________
c. Compute the maximum shearing stress of the beam.________________________
Problem # 4
The simply supported joist is used in the construction of a floor for a building. In order to keep the floor low with respect
to the still beams C and D, the end of thr joists are notched as shown in the figure. Allowable shear stress of wood is 1.02
MPa and the allowable bending stress is 11.8 MPa. Ew = 13800 MPa. The beam carries a concentrated load of 2700 at its
midspan. Neglect the weight of beam.
a. Compute the depth of the beam so as not to exceed the allowable bending stress if it has a width of 50 mm.
b. Compute the smallest “h” so that the beam will not exceed the allowable shearing stress of 2.5 MPa.
c. Compute the deflection of the beam at the midspan.
