9 Measure Air Flow

1) Tools / Fixtures

1.1) Thermal Anemometer (Hot Wire)

1.2) Ladder

2) Procedures

2.1) Prepare the Permit to Work (PTW) and attached JHA for approval by Approved
Authority (OIM) before start the work.

2.2) Perform buddy system to use ladder during take the reading.

2.3) After switched ON the system, let the system run for at least 20 minutes before
taken the data.

2.4) Measure air flow using thermal anemometer (hot wire) in the supply diffuser.
Make sure locate 6-8 point in the supply diffuser for average air flow data.
Formula for air flow rate (Q).

Q (air flow rate)

= Area x Average Velocity

2.5) Record the data air flow for each air supply diffuser in CFM unit.

2.6) Housekeeping.

2) Procedure

2.1) . Prepare the Permit to Work (PTW) and attached JHA for approval by Approved
Authority (OIM) before start the work.

2.2) Perform buddy system to use ladder during take the reading.

2.3) Power the Balometer/Micromanometer with batteries.

2.6) Capture hood assembly

Figure 1.3: Flow hood component

a. Place the base of capture hood on the floor

b. Lift the top of fabric. Insert one end os a support pole into its mount in the base.
There is a cup in each Conner of the frame to accept the other end of each support
pole.
c. Grasp the support pole. Bend pole slightly to insert the top end of the pole into the
support pole cup located opposite corner of the fabric frame. The poles are
connected to the frame corners in a crisscross fashion.

d. Insert the second pole into the pole mount on the opposite side of the base.
e. Repeat step 3 for the second support pole.
f. Repeat step 4 and 5 for the remaining two support pole.
2.7) Flow measurement using capture hood

a. Single reading measurement

*Single reading measure are individual flow measurement initiated by pressing either
the READ button on the meter or Red switch on the left side of the base. Depending
on the flow being measured, a single reading will take one to eight seconds to
complete.
b. Running average measurement
*In this mood, the instrument will measure continuously while displaying a running
average of flow. Pressing either the READ key on the meter or RED switch on the
base will hold the current reading. To restart running average measurement, Press
the READ key or RED switch.

2.8) Single running measurement

a. Select capture hood or hood BP comp in the pressure tool menu

b. Select the data logging mode to manual/single.
c. Set the time constant to 5 seconds.

2.9) Running average measurement

a. Select capture hood or hood BP comp in the pressure tool menu

b. Select the data logging mode to manual/RunAvg.
c. Set the time constant to 5 seconds.
2.2.2.11 Pressurization and Exhaust Fan

1) Tools / Fixtures

1.1) Common tools

1.2) Multimeter

1.3) Manometer

2) Procedures

2.1) Prepare the Permit to Work (PTW) and attached JHA for approval by Approved
Authority (OIM) before start the work.

2.2) Before commencing job, unit must be disconnected supply power by using “LOTO”
method and must do by platform authorized electrician.

2.3) Inspect the physical condition of the fan and motor

2.4) Clean the fan blades to remove dirt and foreign materials.

2.5) Check and ensure motor mounting bolts are properly tightened.

2.6) Check and ensure fan rotation is in the correct direction.

2.7) Check the V-belt condition. Ensure belt tension and alignment are correct (JMS
2.2.2.18).

2.8) Ensure drive guard is fitted and tighten if necessary.

2.9) Lubricate motor bearing and fan bearing if grease nipple is available (JMS 2.2.2.6)

2.10) Check and ensure all cabling termination are not loose.

2.11) Visual inspection to ensure the stability function of Fan and Motor

2.12) Perform de-isolate power supply remove “LOTO” method and must do by a platform
authorized electrician.

2.13) Record motor running amp.

2.14) Record data pressurization using manometer.

2.15) Housekeeping.
3) Record data pressurization procedures

3.1) Prepare the Permit to Work (PTW) and attached JHA for approval by Approved
Authority (OIM) before start the work.
3.2) Start-up instrument
3.3) Zeroing the manometer
i. Manometer is equipped with both a gauge and differential pressure sensor,
allowing for simultaneous measurement and display of high-side gauge and
deferential pressure. The gauge and differential pressure sensors are zeroed
independently of one another.
ii. To measure most accurate gauge pressure measurement, the gauge pressure
sensor should be zeroed prior to taking readings on each new system. Gauge
pressure sensor is zeroed as follow:
1. Enter the main menu by pressing the ENTER key.
2. Select zero-gauge pressure.
3. Follow the on-screen instruction to complete the gauge pressure
sensor zeroing process.
4. Allow the manometer to stand undisturbed for five second until the zero-
gauge pressure sensor function has completed
3.4) Zeroing the differential pressure sensor
i. To ensure the most accurate differential pressure measurement and calculate
flow values, differential pressure sensor should be zeroed prior to taking
reading on each new system. The differential pressure sensor is zeroed as
follows:
1. Go to the measurement system
2. Turn the valve handle on the manometer to bypass position.
3. The instrument will automatically zero differential pressure sensor.
Follow the on-screen instruction and return the knob to measure once
this is done.
3.5) Connect the manometer to the test point
i. Attaching the hose to manometer
ii. Bleeding the entrained ai
3.6) Performing pressure measurement
i. Accessing the pressure measurement screen

Figure: 3.1: Pressure measurement screen

ii. Continuous flow measurement
5. Manometer continuously measures and displays flow readings
whenever the manometer is in the Flow Measurement screen, with the
exception of when the READ key is pressed. When the READ key is
pressed, the displayed readings are averaged measurements taken
over the sampling period as defined by the Log Mode and Log Settings.
The display is updated once per second.
iii. Discrete flow measurement
1. Taking a flow measurement allows for measurement and display of a
single time-averaged reading taken over the sampling period as
defined by the Log Mode and Log Settings. Discrete pressure or flow
measurement values are displayed on-screen for a period of 4
seconds and then returns to continuous measurement mode.
2. Press the READ key.
3. Allow the manometer to stand undisturbed until the reading is
complete
