( G = 80 10
A helical coil spring is made from a bar of steel

N/m 2 )
with mass density
3
ρ=8000 kg/m of diameter 1.2 mm. It is formed into a helix with a radius of 16 mm with 80
turns. It has an unstretched length of 110 mm.
(a) What is the stiffness of the spring?
(b) When a mass is hung from the spring the length of the spring is 120 mm. What is the value
of the mass?
(b) What is the equivalent mass of the system described in part (a) if an approximation of the
inertia effects of the spring is included

2. Replace the spring combination by a single spring that is attached to the block of mass 25 kg. All
beams are made of steel, E=210 × 109 N/m2 and have a cross sectional moment of inertia of
I=2.3 × 10-6 m4. Assume all beams and springs are massless and can be approximated by a
linear spring.
3. What is the equivalent torsional stiffness of the system shown below when the angular
displacement of the disk is used as the generalized coordinate.
