Passage 1
In explaining what goes on in the market under actual circumstances rather tahan under a model
of perfect competition. The Alchemy of Finance: Reading the Mind of Market also offers a
radical theoetical departure from a classical economics (which says Soros, “resembles science
but does not resembles reality”). His theory “of reflexifity” is to economics Heisenberg‟s
“uncertainty principle” is to physics. Markets are always pushed in one direction or another by
the participants‟ biases, says Soros, so the classical concept of equilibrium is not only faulty in
theory but irrelevant in practice. Soros uses his theory to explain recent national and international
developments (the boom and the bust of in international lending, the rise and the fall of the
dollar, the “bull market of our lifetime”) in context of a “reflexive” relationship between market
participants and policy makers who both act on the basis of their imperfect understanding. The
Alchemy of Finance: Reading the Mind of Market show how the contradiction between
monetarism and supply-side economics has produced a self-reinforcing/self-defeating “Imperial
Circle” in which the United States, while trying to predict the eventual outcome of an inherently
unsustainable conjuncture, has, because of its budget and trade deficits, become the “borrower of
the last resort,” a haven for both foreign goods and foreign capital.

Borobudur is a Hindu‐Buddhist temple built in the 9th century under the Sailendra
dynasty of Java. It is located near Magelang on the Island of Java, Indonesia. Abandoned in the
11th century and partially excavated by archeologist in the early 20th cen‐tury, Borobudur

temple is constructed on a hill 46 m (150 ft) high and consist of eight step‐like stone ter‐races,

Buddhist sculpture in bas‐relief; the upper three are circular, each with a circle of bell‐shaped
stupas (Buddhist shrines). The entire edifice is crowned by a large stupa at the centre of the top
circle. The way to the summit extends through some 4,8 km passages and stairways. The design
of Borobudur, a temple‐mountain symboli‐zing the structure of the universe, influenced tem‐ples

Meetings can waste a lot of your time. But you can make your meeting run more
smoothly by following a few simple rules. First, have an agenda. This will help keep you focused
on what is impor‐tant. Next, decided who needs to be involved. More people mean less efficient
discussion. Final‐ly, keep the discussion moving. Thank every spea‐ker as her or she finishes and
moves into the next speaker. This encourage people to make their re‐marks brief. The problem
with meetings, is that no one likes, wants, and needs them. Yet, everyone has them. Meetings are
the corporate world’s res‐ponse to primitive socializing behaviors. People feel more comfortable
in making decisions in groups. They can then share blame if a decision turns out to be the wrong
decision. Sharing credit for a correct decision is not often found in groups. Then individuals tend
to remind people of how persuasive they were in the meting when the “right” decision was made.

2) a. What is one way to run a meeting well?

b. What is the purpose of a meeting agenda?
c. How should you receive other people’s comments at a meeting?
