Favila Water

Refilling Station

ENGINEER’S REPORT

A. General Information

The Favila Water Refilling Station is owned and managed by Mr. Edgar Betito Favila. It is
located at Upper Gadi, Midsayap, North Cotabato. It is established to produce potable
drinking water for commercial purposes. The water to be produced by the
establishment will be in 20-liter containers. The product water is intended to be sold to
clients within Midsayap and the neighbouring areas. The source of raw water is a deep
well which produces safe water. The quantity of the raw water supply is adequate for
the purpose but the quality of the water is tested further to ensure that no contaminant
enters the piping system and it conforms to the minimum requirements set by the
Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water (PNSDW). The water is purified using
the standard multi-stage purification process.

B. Description of the Water Purification Process

The raw water taken from the deep well is made to enter a storage tank and fed into
the filtration machines. The water then passes thru multi-media silica and carbon
progression to remove foul taste and odour, discoloration, chlorine, hydrogen sulphide
and other remaining contaminants. It passes thru softening and conditioning process
using brine to convert hard water into soft water and remove chemicals and pesticides.
In this stage, the pH of the water is increased. The next unit is a sediment depth
filtration system consisting of a 5-micron filter, a carbon block filter and a 1-micron
cartridge type sediment filter which removes any microscopic particle that might clog
succeeding Reverse Osmosis membrane.

The next stage is the Reverse Osmosis System which utilizes a high quality semi-permeable
membrane that allows only pure water molecules to pass through and pushes the impure
water to the reverse side which is the reject drain line. It has a micron rating of 0.0001 ppm
and eliminates 98% total dissolved solids (TDS) and dissolved minerals. Product water now
goes to the holding tank.

From the holding tank, the water is made to pass thru a carbon block filter and two 1-
micron post filters where-in sediments up to 1 micron are removed. Finally, water is
subjected to sterilization process by means of ultra-violet radiation which systematically
destroys the capability of harmful microorganisms. The purified product water is now safe
to drink.

Water is then placed in 20-liter containers to be sold and delivered to customers.

C. Hazards Analysis and Critical Control Points Plan

In order to ensure the safety of the product water that conforms to the criteria
stipulated in the PNSDW, an analysis of the hazards and the critical control points where
contaminants may enter the water purification system is conducted. Attached is a plan
summarizing the areas of operation and the hazards critical control points with corresponding
monitoring system and corrective actions that may be instituted in the water purification
system.

E. Maintenance Program

1. Observe cleanliness, inside and outside the store.

2. Sanitize all equipment including flooring of the store.
3. Maintenance of filters:
a. Filters not designed for backwashing should be replaced as the need arises.
b. Filters designed for cleaning should be backwashed regularly.
4. Every morning, after cleaning the store, product water should be flushed at least
3 to 5 minutes.
5. All water storage facilities should be cleaned, drained and sanitized including
pressure tanks and product water tanks.
6. Always keep the brine tank full of salt; each regeneration should use up to 4 kg of
salt.
7. Fill up the daily maintenance form everyday.
8. A regular vermin abatement program shall be maintained.
