CASE STUDY
SECTION A

FIELD OVERVIEW

The A field (onshore) is located on the eastern margin of India. The discovery well A-1 was
drilled in year 2005 to test the hydrocarbon potential within the sandstone reservoir.
Hydrocarbon accumulations in the field have been established in 2 different sands.

Till date, 3 vertical exploratory wells (A-1 to A-3) have been drilled of which wells A-1 & A-2
proved to be oil bearing in the Diamond Sand. The well A-3 was proved to be dry. Well A-2 is
located updip and south-east of well A-1. Diamond Sand Top was encountered at depths
2565.00 m MDBRT and 2545.00 m MDBRT in wells A-1 and A-2 respectively. The regional
trapping mechanism is stratigraphic.

PROBLEM-1: FORMATION TESTING

Prepare pressure gradient plots for the wells A-1 & A-2 considering 2 scenarios given
below. Also, determine the depths & nature of oil-water contact. Justify your answer with
a schematic.
Scenario 1: Oil zone in the 2 wells form separate pools.
Scenario 2: Oil zone in the 2 wells form a combined, single pool.
Input Data:
 Formation Testing data for both wells.
 PVT data for both wells.
 Log motif of both wells.

PROBLEM-2: VOLUMETRIC ESTIMATION

Step 1: Estimate Net Pay, Porosity and Saturation to be used for volumetrics using the following
cut-offs: (φ ≥ 6%, Sw ≤ 70%, VSh ≤ 30%).
Step 2: Based on maps provided, estimate areal extent of the field. Consider 2 scenarios here:
a) The 2 wells contain 2 separate oil pools.
b) The 2 wells belong to a single oil pool.
Step 3: Considering Oil Recovery Factor = 15%, 20% & 25% (1P, 2P & 3P respectively) and Gas
Recovery Factor = 40%, 50% & 60% (1P, 2P & 3P respectively), calculate the In Place and
Recoverable oil & gas volumes (MMBBL for oil & BCF for gas) for both the above scenarios using
Monte Carlo simulation method.
Input Data:
 Processed logs of wells A-1 & A-2.
 Depth Contour Maps of Diamond Sand.
 PVT data for both wells.
 For Net Pay in scenario (b), consider the average value of the 2 wells.
 Use Crystal Ball software to calculate final 1P, 2P & 3P volumes.

CASE STUDY
SECTION B

FIELD OVERVIEW

The B field (offshore) is located in the KB basin in a water depth of about 90 m. The discovery
well B-1 was drilled in year 1985 to test the hydrocarbon potential within the carbonate section.
Hydrocarbon accumulations in B field have been established within 3 different pays viz. Lower,
Middle and Upper pays.

Till date, 8 vertical exploratory wells (B-1 to B-8) have been drilled of which wells B-1,2,3,5,7&8
proved to be oil bearing in Formation M. The wells B-4 & B-6 were proved to be dry.

PROBLEM-3: PERMEABILITY MODELING

It has been found that the porosity-permeability relationship obtained from core and well test
data is in alignment with porosity-permeability relationship obtained using Timur equation.
Given, CPERM = 3800, prepare a poro-perm plot and determine the other Timur constants that
satisfy the above statement.

Input Data:
 Core Data and Well Test Data.
 Processed logs of wells B-2,3&8.
