Environmental Education & Related Laws

Our knowledge and understanding of the environment and current issues surrounding it comes
from the learning we acquire through environmental education. Through environmental
education we also learn how to effectively deal with the challenges it impose.

While environmental awareness is being well-informed of the dos and don'ts in order for us to
help maintain or fix our natural environment.

Related laws include the National Environmental Awareness and Education Act 2008 (RA No.
9512) that promotes awareness and education to conseve and rehabilitate the environment,
prevent actions that will harm the environment and the consequences of those actions. On
January 2001, under RA No. 9003, ecological solid waste management program was made along
with its institutional mechanisms. RA No. 9275 was made to provide comprehensive water quality
management. In year 1999, RA No. 8749 also known as Philippines Clean Air Act of 1999 issued
comprehensive air pollution control policy. RA No. 9147 provided policies for conservation and
protection of wildlife resources and their habitats and the funds needed. In order to stop illegal
logging, the ownership, sale, and use of chainsaw was regulated under the RA No. 9175, as well as
the violations. The coordination of environmental education as a component in the tertiary
education curriculum was enacted under the CHED Memorandum Order No. 33 S. 2009. Under
the administration of former president Gloria Arroyo, EO 579 was signed to formulate and
implement Green Philippine Programs, as well as mandate the DOST to create programs that will
involve students to encourage the development of environment-friendly solutions. Last is the RA
No. 10121, that focuses on the management framework of the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction
and Management System.
