The sun emits nearly half of its total energy in the near infrared (NIR) spectrum. Our bodies are
biologically hard wired to use this near infrared energy since natural spectrum Light & Heat activate
powerful, intelligent healing systems within us.
It has been noted that wavelengths of 600-950nm activate mitochondrial healing systems
which is the Light Therapy Band. And since water begins to absorb light strongly at 1150nm and
above, the Thermal Infrared Band above 1150nm provides Heat Therapy.
Near infrared (NIR) light has dozens of biological effects on the body. The near infrared
wavelength radiation penetrates into the body and has a direct effect on cellular structure. NIR can
kill parasites and resolve infection.
The main body of research on near infrared light therapy was done by the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Their research has found that the NIR
electromagnetic frequency band of energy penetrates deeply into the body and has a very specific
effect on the cells due to our body’s natural response to specific NIR wavelengths. Inside the
mitochondria of every cell are receptors that respond to these NIR wavelengths. The light triggers an
increase in cell metabolism, protein synthesis (including collagen), and anti-oxidant activity. It
reduces inflammation and pain. Overall the light triggers growth and regeneration of the cells. 1
In many cells, microtubules form radial tracks from the nucleus to the cell periphery. These
tracks are thought to make up a kind of ‘intracellular nervous system’ for communication
information in both directions. For example, cells are often attracted to light. When exposed
to a source of infrared light, cultured CV1 cells respond by sending out pseudopods, which
enable them to crawl toward the light source. The cell's infrared sensor, the centrosome, is
situated on the nuclear membrane, far from the incipient pseudopod. Communication
between these sites is evidently necessary. As the cell receives the stimulus, the microtubules
that interconnect these sites undergo physicochemical change. Hence, some information
apparently propagates along the microtubule, enabling the cell to crawl in the proper
direction.

SAFETY & PRECAUTIONS WHEN USING NIR
NIR safety is an important consideration. For example, excessive sweating and tissue heating is
contraindicated for a fast metabolizer so NIR should be avoided. The following conditions are also
contraindicated for NIR Therapy:
The following precautionary measures are important to remember when using NIR Therapy:
• Never use directly on the head as there is a danger of over-heating the brain.
• Always use a timer to prevent excessive treatment.
• Do not touch the lamps as it will cause burns.
• Do not stare directly at glare of lamp. Use protective goggles when available. (Although not
medically important, protective goggles help lower the glare from the NIR Therapy which may
be uncomfortable for some individuals.)
• Do not wear much clothing in a near infrared heat therapy so that the rays will penetrate
your skin. A bikini bathing suit is fine, if needed. Otherwise, do not wear clothing.
• Rotate 90 degrees every 3 minutes while in therapy.
• Wipe off sweat every few minutes with a towel.
• Always stop your session at once if you feel very faint, if you stop sweating, if
your face turns bright red, or if your heart starts to race.
• Showering is best done at home to allow the body’s temperature to cool down for about an
hour, and allow continued detoxification within this time period. Use as little soap as
needed, and only a natural soap.
