Concepts:
Property is the trait that belongs to a certain individual or thing. Different kinds of matter have different
properties. But there are properties common to all kind of matter.
Physical state of matter:
Matter exist in the different states, there are solid, liquid and gas. Each sates of matter has its properties.
Solid : firm, has definite shape and volume. In solid molecules are paralleled together and keeps its shape.
Hardness is the ability of matter (solid ) to resist from something. There are some properties unique to some solid
like metals .
Malleability: the ability to metals to be hammered into different shapes
Ductility : ability to metals to be drawn into wires.
Brittleness : is the property of solid easy to break
Liquid: occupies the shape of the container. It has fixed volume. Liquid have a definite volume but no definite
shape. The ability of liquid to flow is known as fluidity.
Gas has no definite shape and volume.

Materials :
Containers , marbles , water, can ,balloon, laptop
Projector, cartolina, marker, scotch tape, chart

III. Procedures
a. Preliminary activities
Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

1. Opening prayer
Please stand up for the opening Are you ready to pray classmates
prayer to be led by Aivy Yes,we are!
2. Greeting
Good morning children Good morning teacher Jane!
How are you today? We are fine thank you!
Please arrange your chair and sit Yes teacher
properly
3. Checking of attendance
Who is absent today? None teacher
Very good!
4. Weather report
Everybody look at the window.
What is the weather outside?
Yes, Romeo Today is sunny day!
What is the date today?
Yes, Hazel Today is Monday Sept, 30 2019

5. Review
What was our lesson yesterday?
Yes,Carl The lesson yesterday was about mass and volume of
matter
That’s right!
Yesterday we discussed about mass
and volume of matter.
Give me the difference between
mass and volume.
Yes, Dawn Mass refers to the amount of matter. It is commonly
expressed in milligram, gram, kilogram, and pound while
That’s great! It seems that all of you volume is the space occupied by matter.
understood the previous topic.

b. Presentation of the lesson
Based on the song that we sing a
while ago, what do you think is
our topic for today?
Yes belle I think the lesson for today is about the three states of
matter
Interesting! We will see later if
Belle’s answer is correct
c. Presentation of the objectives
Meanwhile please read the
following objectives on the
board, these will be our guide
for today’s topic.
Jason a. Identify the characteristics and properties
of 3 states of matter.
Carmilla b. Compare and contrast the properties of
solid and liquid, liquid and gas.
Joan c. Give an example of each three states of
matter.
Josh d. Participate in the class discussion.
Jane e. Perform simple experiment to identify
d. Discussion properties of matter
Let’s go back to the song, what have
you noticed?
Yes, Anna The song is about the three states of matter

What are they? they are Solid, liquid and gas

That’s right!

But before we discuss the three

states of matter. What is matter
anyways?
Yes Bryan Matter is defined as anything that has mass and takes up
space(it has volume).
Correct! What else?
Yes, Beth Matter is everything around us.
Exactly!

Give me an example of matter that

you see inside the classroom.
Yes, Loida Chair, table, ballpen etc.
Carol Door, window, aircon etc.

I hope you understand that

everything around us is matter. And
this matter has three states, what are
they?
Yes Annalyn The three state of matter are solid, liquid and gas
Very good!

Describe to me what is solid?

Yes Annable Solid is hard and firm
Right !what else?
Yes Christine Solid can be detected with our five senses
Wonderful! ;

Give me an example solid

Yes, Harvey Rock, wood, white board etc.

On your table, there are marbles and

a can. Place the marbles in the can
Does the marble change in shape?
Yes Joey The shape of the marbles don’t change

What about the volume or space of

each marble? Does it change?
Yes Carol The volume if the marble doesn’t change

That’s right! No matter where you

place them it don’t changed.
What can you conclude?
Yes , jenny I conclude that solid have definite shape and volume

Now ,let proceed to the next state

What is it?
Yes,Barbie Liquid

What is liquid?
Yes, Juliet Liquid can flow and take on the shape of the container in
That right ! which they are placed.

Give me an example of liquid

Yes,Shaun Milk, water, gasoline etc.

Pour the water into container

Does the water take the shape of the
container?
Yes, Emily Yes the water occupies the shape of the container.

What can you conclude from this

activity?
Yes Gerald The liquid has fixed volume but no definite shape.

Fantastic ! that is mean the liquid

has no definite shape but it has
definite volume.

Let proceed to the 3rd state of matter

which is gas.
Describe what is gas
Yes Harold Gas is very light and we cannot see it.
Right !
Give me an example of gas. Air,vapor, helium etc.

let describe some of the properties

of gases. Get a balloon. Inflate it by
blowing air. tie the end of the string.

What is the shape of the balloon?

Yes, Danica The shape of the balloon is oblong
Now , twist the balloon, does the
shape of the balloon change? Yes

What can you say about the weight

of the balloon? It is very light

What can you conclude?

Yes, Joseph Gases have no definite shape and have definite volume.
They flow like liquids and generally light
Wonderful!

e. Generalization
What are the 3 states of matter The 3 states of matter is solid, liquid and gas

What are the properties of solid? Solid Has definite volume and shape.
What are the properties of liquid? Liquid has definite volume but no definite shape
What are the properties of gas? Gas has no definite volume and no definite shape

Any questions? None teacher!

IV. Application

Compare and contrast the properties of

solid, liquid and gas. Place a check
( ) in the column that tells the properties of
the given state of matter. Write other
properties in the last column.

Answer the following questions

State Has Has Has has no Has no Other
1. What properties are common to both mass definite definite definite definite properties
solid and gas? volume shape volume shape

2. What properties are common to Solid

liquid and gas?
Liquid
3. What property distinguishes liquid
from solid? Gas
4. What property distinguishes gas
from liquid?

V. Evaluation Solid Liquid Gas

(Activity)
Please help me to find the missing
matter around. Once you have found
one, kindly paste them in proper
heading.
f. Assignment
Identify objects in your own house, then
classify them according to the 3 states of
matter you have learned today.
