INTRODUCTION

Learning takes place in different avenues and forms of human existence. Formal

education from academic institutions is basically the proper venue for acquiring appropriate

knowledge and skills necessary for future employment. On-the-job training (OJT) is part of the

tertiary curriculum which connects the gap between theory and practice as well as between

classroom education and real industry life presenting a more precious learning experience that

improves the importance of the academic program and form the view of personal and social

usefulness. Allowing the graduating students to apply what they have learned from books in a

work environment would develop their work values and attitude necessary to achieve the

ultimate goal of education to produce efficient and effective leaders and professionals in cross-

cultural and multidisciplinary undertakings.

The objectives of internship are to create an opportunity to learn about a profession; and

to generate values as well as substance in skills for students. It is a part-time job for specific

period, paid modestly or unpaid, in which the interns gain knowledge while contributing to the

organization. It provides students an understanding of a real business situation, but with

supervision and support. It is a popular method of experiential learning where students come

face to face with the real world of work and its complexities, something that cannot be replicated

in the four walls of the classroom.

Today, most industries are providing opportunities for the engineering students to have

hands-on training for future employment because they realize that the training of engineers is not

the sole responsibility of the academe but a shared task with industry. Training aims to change

trainees’ performance through improved knowledge, skills, and attitude.

NARRATIVE
REPORT
On our first day at the Office of the Provincial Engineer, an orientation was given to us.

We sat with the Admin who welcomed us and oriented us about the office policies and on what

will be our job in their respective office.

The office was under renovation during that time and the employees were moved in a

small building adjacent their original office. Piled papers was everywhere and numerous desks

were lined up making the way narrow that you bump to each other. Despite of their difficult

situation the people there are very friendly and they’re doing their job well.

After the orientation, the Admin put us under the supervision of Engineer Lawambae

Adiong. She was very kind and friendly. The first thing she did was to give us some advice and

inspiration about our course. She did not assigned us at different divisions or department.

Our first tasks was to canvass some construction materials. She handed to us a list of

materials to be canvassed. And the tasks is to be done in group so we group ourselves in three:

Alikhan Musur and Rashid Sultan; AbdulMajid Dimal, Omair Abdullah and Abdul Bashit

Solaiman: and Abdel Mipanga, Alimoding Paca, and Fahad Ali. Our supervisor gave us two

weeks to finish the tasks and it should be done within Marawi City only.

At first all of us thought our tasks would be easy and that we could finish it ahead of

time. Canvassing is to go to every construction hardware or trading as much as possible. Not all

person you can talk with are friendly and would like to entertain us so we have to be patient at all

times. And also there are so many hardware and trading within the city which are far from each

other.

On our second week, we did not able to finish our task because there are materials that

cannot be found within the city. We told our supervisor about it luckily she understands about

our situation. The only hardware or trading who entertained us well and gave us more details of

in our canvassing were Al Balad Trading located at Moncado Colony and AL Tamur Trading

located at Panggao Saduc.

Engineer Lawambae accepted our canvass even though it’s not yet finish. She then gave

us our second task which is to make estimates of some of their projects. We were given

individual design for it. And the estimate to be finished or submitted on the last week of our OJT.

We were given much time to do our second tasks.

Honestly, during that orientation, Admin told us that there were no much work they could

give us because they had so many employees. So most of the time we were on standby just

outside the office.

During our vacant time, which happen mostly, we walk around the Provincial Capitol and

go to every building and visit the construction site just beside the capitol.

Also during those times, when we were sitting outside the office an employee of their

office would sit before us and have chat with us, gives us some advices and would share his

experiences as an engineer and the time when he were also an engineering student. Sad to say we

did not got his name. But he introduces us to their new employee who is also an engineer and

one of the youngest in there office and his name was Engineer Timojin Sacar. We always go to

Engineer Timojin’s office whenever we have some questions about our estimates. He would give

us some tips and techniques in making estimates and would lend us some of his books for

photocopy. And also when Sir Cocoy see us outside he would chat with us and give some advices

and inspiration also and when we have some questions we would also go to his office and ask

him some questions.
