CHAPTER I

EXECUTIVE PROFILE

A. OVERVIEW OF THE COMPANY

Coffee shop is a rampant business nowadays because people are fond of drinking coffee
paired with light snacks and cakes. It primarily serves coffee, related coffee drinks (latte,
cappuccino, espresso), and-depending on country- other drinks including alcoholic. Some
coffeehouses may serve cold drinks such as iced coffee and iced tea. A coffeehouse may also
serve some type of food, such as light snacks, sandwiches, muffins or other pastries.
Coffeehouse largely serves as a center of social interaction. It provides patrons with a place to
congregate, talk, read, write, entertain one another, or pass the time, whether individually or in
small groups. Since the development of Wi-Fi, coffeehouses with this capability have also
become places for patrons to access the Internet on their laptops and tablet computers.

Art gallery is a building or space for the exhibition of art, usually visual art. Paintings are
the most commonly displayed art objects. Art galleries are sometimes used to host other artistic
activities, such as performance arts, music concerts or poetry readings. Art gallery and café
provides exceptional coffee experience and dining, compliment of heritage and art.

KBOX Art and Gallery Café was originally an exhibit that sells paintings and different
artworks which symbolize the passion and artistry of the founder. It is owned by Architect
Kendel Esperas who growing up was never a big fan of art museums, galleries, exhibition, etc.
But as he got older, the more he appreciated arts. To bring the art gallery to people’s awareness,
he came up with the idea of adding a café inside to encourage people to spend time and at the
same time notice the paintings. KBOX Art and Gallery Café is located at 4th floor of Esperas
building where there is a bank, too. Kbox was named after him since he was called Kendal box
when he studied architecture in UST. Not only is it a place to appreciate art, you can grab a
bite of dessert and cup of coffee while reading in comfortable couches. There is a recording
studio for local artists and bands to enjoy as well. It is a place for both art and music which is
a wonderful combination. Unlike other galleries, Kbox has a very cool and relaxed vibe. Each
month a featured visual artist is chosen to solo exhibit their artworks.
B. HISTORY OF THE BUSINESS
Kbox Studios started operating in April 2011 as a venue for recording and rehearsal
services. Owned and managed by Architect Kendel Esperas, it was initially a rehearsal studio
solely for his progressive rock band, Kwadro, until he decided to have it opened to the public.
Together with local musicians, visual artists, literarians and art enthusiasts, they help promote
the identity of Tacloban music and art scene. Various artists and friends collaborated and
worked on giving Kbox a much needed rejuvenated, fresh vibe. Kbox added an Art Gallery
Café where a visual artist is featured every month through solo exhibit.

C. NATURE OF THE BUSINESS

A coffee shop is categorized as a food and beverage business that primarily engages in
preparing meals, snacks and beverages, to customer order, for immediate consumption on and
off the premises. The food and beverage sector grew out of simple origins: as people travelled
from their homes, going about their business, they often had a need or desire to eat or drink.
Others were encouraged to meet this demand by supplying food and drink. As the interests of
the public became more diverse, so too did the offerings of the food and beverage sector.
KBOX Art and Gallery Café belongs to the food and beverage service industry where they
serve coffee, related coffee drinks like latte, cappuccino, espresso and cold drinks such as iced
coffee, iced tea, juice etc. They also serve light snacks, sandwiches, muffins or other pastries,
cakes, and rice bowls. Paintings for sale are displayed all over the café which also function as
an ornament and attraction to the place. Kbox also holds weekly open mic for poetry and
spoken art. Although the art gallery was launched first, the café created a huge impact to the
business. People acknowledge Kbox as a café where they can pass time relaxing in its
comfortable couches, reading books, eating and sipping coffee. It is a distinctive café because
books, art pieces and the aroma of coffee fill up the place.
