INSTRUCTIONS
Please read each of the following instructions carefully before attempting
questions:
Candidates should attempt FOUR questions in all.
Question No.1 is compulsory. Out of the remaining FOUR questions
attempt any THREE.

All questions carry equal marks. The number of marks carried by a part of
a question is indicated against it.

Answers must be written in ENGLISH only.

Unless otherwise mentioned, symbols and notations have their usual


standard meanings.

Assume suitable data, if necessary and indicate the same clearly.

Neat sketches may be drawn, wherever required.

All parts and sub-parts of a question are to be attempted together in the


answer book.
Any pages left blank in the answer book must be clearly struck out.

01(a). A solid conical bar of circular cross-section is


suspended vertically. If the length of the bar is L and
the weight per unit volume of the material of the bar is
w, determine the total elongation of the bar due to its
own weight. (6M)

01(b). Derive the formula E = 3K (1  2) , where K, E and 


represent the bulk modulus, modulus of elasticity and
Poisson’s ratio respectively. (6M)

01(c). Briefly explain the important assumptions in the theory


of pure bending. (6M)

01(d). Explain super plasticity of materials? Give two


examples? (6M)

01(e). Differentiate between Elastic deformation and Plastic


deformation. (6M)

01(f). Write short notes on Stability of governor.

01(g). A long rod of uniform rectangular section and
thickness t, originally straight, is bent into the form of a
circular arc and the displacement ‘d’ of the mid-point
of length L is measured by means of a dial gauge. The
displacement ‘d’ may be regarded as small compared
with length L. Show that the longitudinal surface strain
 in the rod is given by  = 4td/L2. (10M)

for the mechanism shown below.

01(i). A machine component is subjected to a reversed


bending stress of 400 MPa for 10% of the time, a
reversed bending stress of 500 MPa for 40% of the
time, and a reversed bending stress of 600 MPa for
50% of the time. Determine the expected life of the
part.

The endurance strength of the component material for


various stress levels are as follows:

01(j). A shaft is subjected to twisting and bending moments


0f 1500 N-m and 1000 N-m respectively. If the
permissible stresses are 65 MPa in tension
(compression) and 45 MPa in shear; determine the
diameter of the shaft. (10M)

02(a). In a spring-controlled governor, the controlling force


curve is a straight line. The balls are 400 mm apart
when the controlling force is 1500 N and 240 mm
when it is 800 N. The mass of each ball is 10 kg.
Determine the speed at which the governor runs when
the balls are 300mm apart. By how much should the
initial tension be increased to make the governor
isochronous? Also, find the isochronous speed.

02(b). A steel rod of 20 mm diameter fitted centrally to a tight


fitting copper tube of 40 mm external diameter. The
tube is closed with the help of a rigid washer of
negligible thickness and nuts threaded on the rod. The

nuts are tightened, till the compressive load on the tube
is 5 kN. Determine the stresses in the rod and the tube
when the temperature of the assembly falls by 50C.
Take E for steel as 200  103 N/mm2 and copper 100 
103 N/mm2 and coefficient of expansion  for steel as
1210–6 perC and copper as 1810–6 per C

02(d). Calculate packing factor for face centered cubic


structure? (8M)

03(a). For the mechanism shown in below figure determine


3, 4, 3, 4 when 2 = 1 rad/s(anti clockwise), 2 = 1
rad/s2 (anti clockwise).

03(b). State and derive distortion energy theory of failure?


And write its limitations ? (12M)

03(c). A rotating bar made of steel (u = 700 MPa) is


subjected to a completely reversed bending stress with
corrected e = 350 MPa. Find the Fatigue strength the
bar for a life of 105 cycles? (8M)

03(d). A prismatic bar is fastened between two rigid walls at


A and B and subjected to loads as shown in Figure.
Determine the reactions at the supports.

04(a). Two circular shafts AB and BC of the same material
but different diameter are welded together at point B as
shown in the figure. Ends A and C are fixed. An
external torque T0 is applied to the shafts at point B.
Find the torques exerted on the ends of the shafts at A
and C.

Also calculate torques for d1 = 2d2 , l1 = l2 and T0 = 17

04(b). The layout of a two-stage gear box is shown in figure.


The number of teeth on the gears a are as follows:

z1 = 20 , z2 = 50 , z3 = 20 , z4 = 50

Pinion 1 rotates at 1440 rpm in the anti-clockwise


direction when observed from the left side of the page
and transmits 10 kW of power to the gear train. The
pressure angle is 20o. Draw a free-body diagram of the
gear tooth forces and determine the reactions at bearing
E and F.

04(c). Write the differences between slip and twinning ?.

05(a). In a quick return motion of the crank and slotted lever


type, the ratio of maximum velocities

 Max.velocity during return stroke 


 i.e.,   2.
 Max.velocity during cutting stroke 

If the length of stroke is 25 cm find:


(i) The length of the slotted lever;
(ii) The ratio of times of cutting and return strokes;
(iii) The maximum cutting velocity if the crank
rotates at 30 rpm. (15M)

05(b). A rigid bar with negligible weight is hinged at O and
attached to two vertical rods at B and C as shown in
Fig Assuming the rods are initially stress free, what is
the maximum load P that can be applied at A so that
the maximum stresses in the steel and bronze rods do
not exceed 150 MPa and 70 MPa respectively? Area of
steel bar in 900 mm2, E for steel is 210 GPa and length
is 1.5m, Area of bronze bar is 300mm2, E for bronze is
84 GPa and length is 2m.
