Field Observation Assignment #1

1. Observe and Record

a. When it comes to the parking lot, teachers walk their students to where the
parents pick the students up. If a student needs the bus, usually those students are
in the front of the line. Students who needs to get on the busses are a bit of a
higher priority seeing that the bus needs to leave soon to accommodate the other
students as they head home. The principal is also by the busses making sure that
students get on the correct busses. When it comes to assemblies, teachers line up
the students in their usual fashion. Once lined up, students walk with the teacher
to the Multipurpose room. Students sit by classes for the assembly and watch as a
whole. Once done, they can be dismissed by classes or by rows to walk to their
teacher. Once done, students head back to their class. Assigned duties are usually
done by support staff and if needed, teachers. One of the assigned duties the
support staff does is monitor the busses. They will move around cones and know
each bus route and the students who get on that bus. Support staff members also
have lunch room duty. They make sure students are staying at the appropriate
levels and dismiss students. If a student needs to go to the bathroom or needs an
item opened from their lunch, students ask the support staff member.
b. The procedures of the lunch room are that students are to eat quietly and calmly.
Students enter the lunch room usually after recess is over. If the students brought
their lunch, they will go sit at the table they need to while those who need to
purchase hot lunch will wait in line until they get their food and then sit as well
with their classes. Staying at a “voice level 1”, students may talk and chat as long
as they are quiet and are eating. Once done, the support staff or teacher stationed
in the lunch room dismisses the students.
The procedures of the halls are that students must walk quietly to their
destination. If it is a big group or class, students must walk on the blue tape that
are in the hallways so the lines are straight and clear. If the group is small or a
student is walking by themselves, they must walk close to the walls and out of the
way of others.
The procedures of the library is that students enter quietly and are respectful to
the books. The students must use a voice level 1 here. Students can use some of
the computers here or relax on the reading carpet. Students are expected to get
books that are on or near their AR levels.
I did not accompany a class to the computer lab, but if it’s like my school
experience, you were supposed to be quiet and work on what you needed to work
on since the computer lab was rented out for a short period of time by the teacher.
You could not eat or drink by the computers. You were expected to get as much
work as you could done.
c. Rex Bell has multiple specialists that are at the school. They have specialists for
Science (individually), Math and Science (together), Art, Library, P.E., Music,
and Reading. One thing that Rex Bell does is not only have the teachers teach
science during class, but also go to a specialized science teacher who teaches the
students as well. All the rooms for specials are located in the same hallway across
from each other at the bottom of the main building.
● For Science, the specialist is Christine Anderson.
● Amy Cardinali teaches Art.
● James Gostomski is the Librarian. He is in the library along with
Ms.Victoria Taylor who is the Library Assistant.
● Thomas Payer teaches P.E. and he is in the P.E. room with Ms. Gency
Carballo who is the P.E. Assistant.
● Amy Paulos is the Music teacher located in the Music Room.
● Karen Johnson and Catherine Trahan are both Reading Strategist. They
are in the second extension building of Rex Bell.
● Maria Young is the Math and Science Specialist whose room is in the
main hallway so the children has easier access to her.

2. According to the CCSD an Employee Rights to Know Handbook:

a. If an adult wishes to take a child home early, They must go to the front office and
tell the office staff that they wish to take the child(ren) home and state the
reason(s) why they wish to do so. Once the office approves, they call the
classroom via intercom or phone and inform the teacher that the student(s) is
going home. Once stated, the teacher tells the student(s) to get their items ready
and tell explain and give any items they may miss in class before they leave the
classroom.
b. The fire drills happen once a month. When a fire drill happens, students are to
leave the classroom in a quick and efficient manner and to follow the Fire Drill
pattern that was told to them the first few days into school. Usually those in the
same corridor follow the same path and meet at the same location outside of the
school. Once all the students are all in the same spot, teachers take attendance and
start t account for those missing from classes. Once done, students and teachers
wait for the “okay” from the higher ups to return back to the school.
c. The shelter in place procedures are conducted every quarter. These are in place in
case of an area wide toxic gas leak . A shelter in place procedure includes the
teacher taping the door so no toxic gas get in the door. Class still goes on as usual.
d. Teachers do have a first aid kit available in the classroom. The kit includes
bandages, gauze and small yet effective essentials to help them with minor
casualties in the classroom.
e. One item that was interesting to me while I was reading the teacher’s handbook
was the section on the Students Services Division. According to the book, you
can’t use water bottle sprayers, blasts of air and verbal/mental abuse on students
with disabilities. I feel that should be something you shouldn’t use on students in
general. That is never a good way to deal with a situation of any kind. Good
communication truly gets you far in life.

3. After School and Partnership Activities

a. Rex Bell has multiple extracurricular activities such as track, basketball, dance,
Coyote club, tutoring, and backpack club to name a few.
b. Rex Bell Elementary School has 6 different community partners with the school.
Rex Bell is partnered with Palace Station, Spread the Word Nevada, 3 Square,
Silver State School Credit Union, Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino and the Wynn
Resort and Casino. While some are silent partners, Three Square, for example, is
how the backpack club functions. The backpack club is a club for those who need
extra help with food at home. The “club” is a simple way to cover up their
situation and make them feel a part of something.
c. There are multiple events parents can participate in. Parents can join the PTA.
They can also volunteer to help watch the students on the playground and the
cafeteria and can volunteer to read to the students.
