CHAPTER 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter shows the statistical results of the data gained

from the administration of the questionnaire on the one hundred

nineteen (119) respondents followed by an analysis and

interpretation of data.

1. Profile of Respondents

1.1 Age Table 1 shows the frequency and percent distribution

according to age of the respondents.

Table 1 shows the most 59.66% of the respondents range from

17-18 years old, 34.45% of the respondents range from 15-16 years

old, 5.04% of the respondents range from 19-20 years old and

0.84% of the respondents range from 21 and above respectively.

The data gathered simply shows that the respondents who

participated in the study are mostly come from the youth,

considering the main focus of the study is about the impact of

heavy academic workload on stress level of students particularly in

Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) strand. It is already

given that majority of the teenagers really cope with the impact of

academic workload on stress level.

1.2 Gender Respondents were asked to indicate their gender to

the questionnaire as the relevant option provided (male or

female). All 119 participants (100%) responded. Of the 119

respondents, 55 (46.22%) were male and 64 (53.78%) were

female.

Based on the data accumulated, the female respondents

initiate bigger population of the number of the respondents who

participated in the study compared to male, but the difference is

not too far because during the time of conducting the

questionnaires, all the students from Grade 11 and 12 in

Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) strand in Saint

Michael’s Institute are willing to participate and accessible to

get information from them. It is just that the number of female

students from Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM)

strand have higher quantity than the male.

1.3 Civil Status Table 2 shows the frequency and percentage

distribution, according to the civil status of the respondents.

As presented in the table 2 above, 100% of the respondents of the

study are indicated as single.

The research study aimed to focus on impact of heavy academic

workload on stress level of students particularly in Accountancy,

Business and Management (ABM) strand. By the time the questionnaires

were to be distributed, majority of the population of Grade 11 and 12

students were present leading for the researchers to take that as an

advantage in conducting the research. This certain part of the

questionnaire depicts the respondents’ discipline in terms of their

management of heavy academic workload and time that will have impact

on the stress level of the students.

1.4 Religion The Table 3 shows the frequency and percentage

distribution according to the religion of the respondents.

Table 3 proves that respondents are mostly Catholics, followed by

other religions that are not indicated, INC, Muslim, and Protestant, in a

decreasing order based on their percentage.

The respondents who got the highest number according to their

Religion are the Catholics; this proves that most respondents in Grade

11 and 12 Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) strand in

Saint Michael’s Institute are Catholics.

1.5 Nationality The Table 4 shows the frequency and percentage

distribution according to the nationality of the respondents.

Table 4 shows that all the respondents for the research

study of the impact of heavy academic workload on stress level of

students particularly in Accountancy, Business and Management

(ABM) strand are all Filipino.

The Table 5 shows if the academic stress has a huge impact on the

students. The 2.1 was answered Yes by the respondents in the

percentage of 92.44% and 7.56% in No. This means that students agreed

that academic workload makes the students feel mentally and

emotionally tired because it consumes their rest hours. Next is 2.2 that

asked if the academic workload are silent barrier to the implementation

of technology-enhanced learning strategies in Accountancy, Business

and Management students, this got 75.63% yes and 24.37% no, this

basically means that the it is a silent barrier for the ABM students and

also the result is just near with each other to tie. This question followed

by 2.3 which results 78.15% in yes and 21.85% in no, it shows that most

of the students are feeling surrounded by high expectations from other

people because of the heavy academic workloads. 2.4 ask if heavy

academic workload lead the students to more difficulties in studying that

are too hard to deal with. The greater number of students answered yes

with a percentage of 78.99% and no in 21.01% which means that some

of the students are having a hard time to study well because of too much

school works that are given to them. And lastly the 2.5, this question got

89.92% yes and 10.08% no, means that the heavy academic workload

affect the physical health of the students which will probably affects the

emotional and mental health.

Table 6 mainly shows the effect of stress on academic

performances of the students. Majority for question 3.1 agrees that heavy

academic workloads add stress and pressure on mentality of the

students 89.08% of Yes, and 10.92% of No. Question 3.2 still get the

majority of Yes having 63.03% and 36.97% of No, which means that

high stress level in academic workload makes the students unable to

meet the academic demands. Question 3.3 got 90.76% Yes, and 9.24%

No, which clearly states that students feel nervous or worried about

stressful situations because of heavy academic workloads. Question 3.4

got 81.51% Yes, and 18.49% No, which also states that the majority

thinks heavy academic workloads lead to more difficulties in studying

that are too hard to deal with. Lastly, question 3.5 got 87.39% of Yes,

and 12.61% of No, which means that most of the respondents agree that

heavy academic workload affects the time management of the students.

Based on the results, the respondents clearly take heavy academic

workload as burden that affects the stress level.

The table 4 above shows the result regarding on how does the

students manage the stress in different matters. As a result to the 4.1

question, greater number of students who answered Yes with a

percentage of 76.47% which means that students make a way to unwind

or chill their minds whenever they experience stress compared to those

respondents who answered No with a result of 23.53%. For the 4.2

question, the result was 80.67% of the respondents who answered Yes,

while on the other hand, 19.33% answered No that confirms for a result

of students are keeping themselves to calm down and get their minds off

as the students encounter things that give them stress in life.

Meanwhile, for the 4.3 question, respondents who answered Yes with a

percentage of 47.06% and No with a percentage of 52.94% ,this result

proves that the respondents are not able to attend parties to forget the

stressors and divert attention to another matter. For the matter of the

4.4 question, larger group of the respondents answered Yes with a

percentage of 47.06% that validates that students really seek and look

for a guidance of other people as they go through the stressful issues as

compared to those respondents who answered No with a percentage of

52.94%. Lastly, the 4.5 question section got a percentage of 56.30% as

an answer for Yes and 43.70% in No. It is an evidence that majority of

the respondents sleep and rest when the students feel stress. The table 4

rely on the discussions on the aforementioned above, even if all the

respondents are different to the other one and hold different perspective,

majority of them do manage the stress by taking time in relaxing and

resting their minds for them to be able to perform the works needed to be

accomplished.

In this table, it shows how does heavy academic workloads can

affect the health of the students. Majority in question 5.1 agree that

having heavy academic workloads can change the behavior of

respondents with a percentage of 84.03% in Yes, and 15.97% in No.

Question 5.2 still gets the majority of Yes having 84.03% and 15.97% of

No, which means that academic workload affects the mental health of the

students. Question 5.3 got 81.51% Yes, and 18.49% No, which clearly

states that dealing with the heavy academic workload can lead to

frustration if it is not done appropriately. Question 5.4 got 85.71% Yes,

and 14.29% No, which also states that the majority thinks that heavy

academic workload affect students in having sickness if their mind and

body did not rest in doing the needed works. Question 5.5 still get the

majority of Yes having 83.19%, and 16.81% in No, which clearly states

that stress can be the reason of students mental breakdown because of

improper stress management.
