Secondary Lesson Plan

1. Standards/Objectives

1.1. INTASC Standards

1.1.1. The teacher engages in ongoing professional learning and uses

evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of

his/her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other

professionals, and the community), and adapts practice to meet the needs

of each learner.

1.1.2. The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment

to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to

guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making.

1.2. Nevada Common Core Standards and Objectives

1.2.1. Students understand the use of variables in mathematical

expression.

1.2.1.1. Objective: Students will be able to describe why variables

are used in mathematical expressions.

Dean 2

1.2.2. They write expressions and equations that correspond to given

situations, evaluate expressions, and use expressions and formulas to solve

problems.

1.2.2.1. Objective: Students will be able to solve mathematical

expressions that include variables.

1.3. AVK Learning Styles

1.3.1. Auditory

1.3.1.1. Teacher will explain PowerPoint verbally so students can

hear the lesson and not just read it.

1.3.2. Visual

1.3.2.1. Teacher will include visuals in PowerPoint so students can

see what is being taught.

1.3.3. Kinesthetic

1.3.3.1. Teacher will include some movement in the lesson so

students who learn best moving will learn.

2. Materials/Equipment:

2.1. PowerPoint

2.2. Worksheet

2.3. Mini assessment

2.4. White boards and markers

3. Instruction

3.1. Do First
Dean 3

3.1.1. Students will spend five minutes writing down everything they

know about variables and expressions that include variables.

3.2. Mini-lesson

3.2.1. Mini lesson will begin with a BrainPOP video

(https://www.brainpop.com/math/algebra/equationswithvariables/). After

the video, teacher will use a PowerPoint to teach how variables work in

mathematical expressions and how to solve them. At the end of the

PowerPoint will be a quick 2 question check that students will complete

on whiteboards to check understanding.

3.3. Guided Practice

3.3.1. Students will spend a few minutes writing a problem on their

whiteboard and leave the whiteboard on their desk. After, they’ll have 15

seconds to get up and find a new desk with a whiteboard on it. They’ll

then see who can solve the problem the fastest. This will repeat three-five

times depending on how time allows. Student with the most wins gets a

piece of candy.

3.4. Independent Practice

3.4.1. Students will work on a worksheet independently. If the worksheet

isn’t completed by the end of class, it becomes home learning.

3.5. Exit Slip

3.5.1. Students will spend the last five minutes of class answering a three

question “mini quiz” to turn in as they walk out so the teacher can make

sure students are understanding the material.

4. Resources

4.1. Equations with Variables. [Video File]. Retrieved from

https://www.brainpop.com/math/algebra/equationswithvariables/.

5. Reflection

5.1. With this lesson plan, students learn what a variable is and how to solve

equations that include variables.

5.2. I think that the level of student engagement and active learning are high.

Students get the chance to move and interact with their peers. There’s also an

element of competition which helps drive middle school students.

5.3. I’d say the strengths of this lesson plan is that the elements are though

through. The lesson includes a PowerPoint, video, worksheets, and keys to both

worksheets.

5.4. The weaknesses of this lesson
