Difficulties in Finding Quarters:
March 1889- Rizal is having a difficulty in finding a place to stay.
May 6, 1889- Universal Exposition of 1889 is the reason for the
attraction that attracted lots of tourists and visitors, with this,
lots of landlords raise the cost of renting.

• A prestigious work of historical scholarship. It is an able of the alleged indolence of
Filipinos.

• What: Magnificent project of Rizal to establish a Modern College in Hong Kong.
• Aims: „To train and educate men of good family and financial means in accordance
with the demands of modern times and circumstances‟
• Mr. Mariano Cunanan- Rich filipino resident in Paris; promised Rizal to raise 40,000 as
an initial capital for the college.
• This was not materialized; during Rizals exile in Dapitan, he founded a school for boys.

• Originally published in Barcelona on 1889 to reply to another slander of


Fr. Salvador Font- Mastermind of banning.
• This demonstrated Rizal‟s wit and his prophetic insights.
• He predicted much ahead of time the use of overseas- telephonic conversations

Christmas in Paris
• December 25, 1889- Rizal‟s last Christmas dinner in in Paris.
• After new year, he visits London for two possible reasons:
– 1. To check his annotated edition of Morga‟s sucesos
– 2. To see Gertrude Beckett for the last time

– Rizal came back to Paris in January 1889.


Life in Brussels
• January 28, 1890 – After going back to Paris, he decided to go to
Brussels, Capital of Belgium.
Reasons of Leaving Paris:
1. The cost of living in Paris was very high because of exposition.
2. The life in Paris affected his writings.
3. Some of his friends believed that he was leaving again because of a
woman, same reason when he was in London.

[ Later on, Ventura knew that the reason is economic so he offer Rizal to
stay with him in Paris without paying he‟s rent- but Rizal declined for he had
a high sense of dignity and would not accept charity to any man. ]
Life in Brussels
• He was accompanied by Jose Albert.
• They live in a boarding house: 38 Rue Philippe Champagne.

• The boarding house is run by two Jacoby Sisters named Suzanne and Marie.
• Later, Albert left and was replaced by Jose Alejandro – Engineering student.

– Rizal was busy writing his second novel.


– He wrote more than 10 articles for La Solidaridad and letters for his family and
friends.
– He spent part of his time in medical clinic.
– He had gymnastics at the gymnasium and target practice and fencing at the
armory.

Rizal Criticize Madrid Filipinos for Gambling

• Juan Luna and Valentine Ventura send news to Rizal that the
Filipinos in Spain were destroying the good name of their nation by
gambling too much. They Urged Rizal to do something about it.
• Rizal wrote to Marcelo H. del Pilar to remind the Filipinos in Madrid
that they went to Europe to work for their Fatherland‟s freedom and not
to gamble.
• Through gambling they are showing that the Filipinos are not worthy of
freedom but of slavery.
• They should spend their time doing something noble and generous
because the youth is noble and generous.
• The gambling Filipinos in Madrid became very angry when they learned
of Rizal‟s moralizing that they called him “Papa” (pope) instead of
“Pepe”.
Bad News from Home
• The Calamba Agrarian Trouble was getting worst.
• The management of the Dominican hacienda continually raised the land
rents.
• The Dominican order filled a suit in court to dispossess the Rizal Family of
their lands in Calamba.
• The tenants were persecuted.
• Paciano, Antonio Lopez and Silvestre Ubaldo were deported to Mindoro.
• Manuel T. Hidalgo – was banished to Bohol for the second time.
Presintement of Death

• In his childhood he had a strange belief that I would not reach 30 years of
age.
• He had bad dreams, although he was not superstitious, he feared he will
not lived long.
• He said “In my childhood I had a strange belief that I would not reach 30
years of age” and “Laong Laan (Ever Ready) is my true name”
• He was not afraid to die, but just wanted to finish what nobody else
could continue ( 2nd Novel) .
Preparation to Go Home
• Rizal planned to go home. He could not stay in Brussels writing a book
while his parents, relatives and friends in the distant Philippines were
persecuted.
• July 18, 1890 – he wrote a letter to Ponce in which he expresses his
determination to go home.
• All his friends, including Blumentritt, Jose Ma. Basa, and Ponce, were
horrified by Rizal’s to return to the Philippines. They warned him of the
danger that awaited him at home.
Decision to go to Madrid

• No threats or danger could change his plan but a letter from Paciano
came, saying hat they lost the case against Dominicam Orders and would
be needing a lawyer to hold the case in the Supreme Court of Madrid.

• M.H del Pilar – Rizal wrote to him on June 20, 1890 to be the lawyer and
told him that he’s going to go to Madrid to assist in handling the case.

When Jose Rizal left her place, her dream was to follow him and to travel with
the Filipino lover boy who was always in her thoughts.
Suzanne Jacoby was a Belgian lady whom Rizal met when he was 29.

The Girl was so in loved with him that even in letters, she was hoping that
Rizal would write back.
