Structural Design Calculations

Structural Design Calculations

The following calculations are intended illustrate the structural approach for design of the reinforced concrete
flood barrier superstructure for the Rebuild by Design Hudson River Project. Most of the design calculations were
performed using Excel spreadsheets to facilitate the constantly changing nature of the design development
process throughout the feasibility assessment.

The provided calculations include the following:

• “Structural Basis of Design”, including code references, design assumptions, and design load
determination.
• “Punching Shear Calculation for Impact Loads” used to determine the minimum thickness at the top of
the stem, driven by impact loads.
• “Design Segment Key Plans” illustrating design wall heights and corresponding design cases for
superstructure and foundation design throughout the project.
• “Reinforced Concrete Flood Barrier Design Summary” outlining all of the design cases considered.
• “Reinforced Concrete Barrier Stem Structural Design – Non-Breaking Wave Condition”, including
determination of the design moment and shear for stem and foundation design, as well as stem concrete
strength design per ACI 318-14 requirements.
• “Reinforced Concrete Barrier Breaking Wave Load Determination”, wherein the design breaking wave
force on the wall is determined as described in the Structural Basis of Design.
• “Reinforced Concrete Barrier Stem Structural Design – Breaking Wave Condition”, including determination
of the design moment and shear for stem and foundation design, as well as stem concrete strength design
per ACI 318-14 requirements.
• “Footing Shear Capacity (HP14x89 Piles)” illustrates the design methodology for determining footing shear
capacity and summarizes the calculated capacity for various footing thicknesses. Design is performed
using the geometry of a HP14x89 pile.
• “Footing Shear Capacity (W21x182 Piles)” illustrates the design methodology for determining footing
shear capacity and summarizes the calculated capacity for various footing thicknesses. Design is
performed using the geometry of a W21x182 pile.
