CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

People from some countries in Southeast Asia were only accustomed to drinking

coffee, soda, juice ice teas and hot tea (Day Translations, 2013). Teas, and its family

bubble teas, has been around for decades in various forms. But in today’s everyday

living, milk tea has been a trend’s rise from hype to staple in the recent years of the

country. It’s very popular because it is very delicious, the taste becomes so special when

milk is added to the tea.

Teas has grown exponentially and estates around the world and produces different

flavors and unique characters. There are many types of milk tea and the most famous one,

in the Vietnam, is what is known as Bubble tea or Pearl milk tea that is found in 1980s

and later. And the most popular style of milk tea originated in Taiwan. Due to high

demand of milk tea consumers, different milk tea shops have been established in the

different places in the country. Now that the teas are served in different and more

creative, people are surely finding themselves enjoying regular serving of this kind of

drink. In every individual in different age bracket have been attracted in the milk tea

industry.

Filipinos are more of coffee drinkers than tea drinkers but milk tea successfully

captured the attention of the young generation. Tea consumption driven by growing

health consciousness among middle and higher income consumers. Compared to coffee

and “other” hot drinks, Filipinos perceived that drinking tea is beneficial to the body.

Milk tea provides a healthy alternative to soft drinks, coffee, and smoothies and it

provides a number of health benefits. It contains flavonoids which are naturally occurring

compounds believed to have antioxidant properties. For example, the black tea improves

the ability of arteries to relax and expand to keep the blood pressure healthy. If its

consumed moderate amount of milk tea, it cannot harm.

On the other hand, many Filipinos find drinking milk tea addictive, because it is

pleasant, soothing drink. Drinking milk tea gives people satisfaction as it provides many

benefits, which are known to ancient cultures.

According to Life health, milk tea can be bad in individual’s health as it not just

shows issues in individual physical health but disrupts mental wellness too. Brewing tea

and milk together can hinder the absorption of essential nutrients in the body. It can also

promote dehydration.

In conclusion, we conduct this study to determine the perspectives of students on

the consumption of milk tea of Ilocos Norte National High School. Most of the

consumers are unaware on how milk tea can affect different aspects to an individual.

Statement of the Problem

This phenomenological study aims to determine the perceptions, feelings, and

experiences of Milk Tea among Students of Ilocos Norte National High School.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the specific questions:

1. What are the reasons of Senior High School students on drinking milk tea?

2. How do the student-respondents feel when drinking milk tea?

3. How does milk tea consumption affect the health of the respondents?

4. How often do the respondents drink milk tea?

5. What brand and flavor of milk tea do the respondents drink?

Significance of the Study

This study aims to determine the perceptions, feelings and experiences of Milk

Tea among Students of Ilocos Norte National High School. This section provides a brief

description of the different definitions of the research title.

The result of this study would be a great help to the following:

Students. The study will bring help to the students to know the benefits of milk

tea in their physical and mental health.

Teachers. The study will bring information as an instrument to give guidance and

knowledge to the students and to the people around them.

Parents. The study will bring awareness to the parents on the advantage and

disadvantages of milk tea in their physiological, social, mental, financial and emotional

aspects to the Milk Tea consumers.

Future Researchers. This study will be used as a basis for the future research

purposes and as a guide for them to improve their research study.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study will mainly focus on the perception, feelings and experiences on the

consumption of milk tea of the students of Ilocos Norte National High School.

This study focuses on the students enrolled in the different grade levels of Ilocos

Norte National High School. This phenomenological study will cover the perception on

the consumption of milk tea with the partaking of every grade level one student per

curriculum/program, tracks and strands at Ilocos Norte National High School with the

total of thirty-one (31) respondents. This study will be conducted on the duration of the

first semester on the months of June-October 2019.

Definition of Terms

The key terms in the study are given the following operational:

Milk tea. Famous kind of drink offered in different tea shops

Consumption. Act of students on drinking milk tea

Senior High School Students. Students who are under K-12 program
