Circular motion can be modeled by using the parametric representations of the form x(t) = sin

t and y(t) = cos t. (A parametric representation means that a variable, t in this case, determines

both x(t) and y(t). This will give the full circle for 0 ≤ t ≤ 2𝜋. If we consider a 4-foot-

diameter-wheel making one complete rotation clockwise once every 10 seconds, show that the

motion of a point on the rim of the wheel can be represented by x(t) = 2 sin (𝜋t/5) and y(t) = 2

cos (𝜋t/5).

a. Find the positions of the point on the rim of the wheel when t = 2 seconds, 6 seconds,

and 10 seconds. Where was this point when the wheel started to rotate at t = 0?

b. How will the formulas giving the motion of the point change if the wheel is rotating

counterclockwise?

c. At what value of t is the point at (2,0) for the first time?

ANSWER:

Known : x(t) = sin t ; y(t) = cos t ; t = determines both x(t) and y(t)

0 ≤ t ≤ 2𝜋

D = 4 ft

p = 10 seconds

If the periodic function attains a minimum and a maximum, we define the amplitude,

A, as half the vertical distance between the highest point and the lowest point on the

graph.
1
Thus, A = 2 (4)

A=2

So the motion of a point on the rim of the wheel represented by x(t) = 2 sin (𝜋t/5) and

y(t) = 2 cos (𝜋t/5) are PROVEN.

a. The value of x(t) and y(t) when t = 2, 6, and 10 seconds, and t = 0 second

 t = 2 seconds

x (t) = 2 sin (𝜋t/5) y (t) = 2 cos (𝜋t/5)

x (2) = 2 sin (2𝜋/5) y (2) = 2 cos (2𝜋/5)

x (2) = 2 sin 72 y (2) = 2 cos 72

x (2) = 2 (0,951) y (2) = 2 (0,309)

x (2) = 1,902 y (2) = 0,618

2
 t = 6 seconds

x (t) = 2 sin (𝜋t/5) y (t) = 2 cos (𝜋t/5)

x (6) = 2 sin (6𝜋/5) y (6) = 2 cos (6𝜋/5)

x (6) = 2 sin 216 y (6) = 2 cos 216

x (6) = 2 (-0,588) y (6) = 2 (-0,809)

x(6) = -1, 176 y (6) = -1, 618

 t = 10 seconds

x (t) = 2 sin (𝜋t/5) y (t) = 2 cos (𝜋t/5)

x (10) = 2 sin (10𝜋/5) y (10) = 2 cos (10𝜋/5)

x (10) = 2 sin 360 y (10) = 2 cos 360

x (10) = 2 (0) y (10) = 2 (1)

x(10) = 0 y (10) = 2

 t = 0 seconds

x (t) = 2 sin (𝜋t/5) y (t) = 2 cos (𝜋t/5)

x (0) = 2 sin (0𝜋/5) y (0) = 2 cos (0𝜋/5)

x (0) = 2 sin 0 y (0) = 2 cos 0

x (0) = 2 (0) y (0) = 2 (1)

x(0) = 0 y (0) = 2

b. The change of formula if the wheel is rotating counterclockwise.

From the exercise we know that the wheel is rotating clockwise and the parametric

representation, t is positive in the formula has been proven before. So, if the wheel

is rotating counterclockwise then t will be negative.

3
Thus,

x (t) = 2 sin (𝜋t/5) y (t) = 2 cos (𝜋t/5)

x (t) = 2 sin (-𝜋t/5) y (t) = 2 cos (-𝜋t/5)

x (t) = - 2 sin (𝝅t/5) y (t) = 2 cos (𝝅t/5)

c. x (t) = 2 and y(t) = 0 ; t =?

x (t) = 2 sin (𝜋t/5) y (t) = 2 cos (𝜋t/5)

2 = 2 sin (𝜋t/5) 0 = 2 cos (𝜋t/5)

1 = sin (𝜋t/5) cos 90 = cos (𝜋t/5)

Sin 90 = sin (𝜋t/5) 𝜋/2 = 𝜋t/5

𝜋/2 = 𝜋t/5 t = 5/2

t = 5/2 t = 2,5

t = 2,5
