CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Throughout the decade, the use of technology has significantly improved. In fact, there are many
technologies invented to help us in our daily lives such as to communicate one person to another, and it
aids us to ease our studies/works. Therefore, most of the people rely on their lives in technology. One of
the most used technology is the cellphone. A cellphone is a device used to communicate, streaming of
social media, to get limitless information and a lot of other functions. Cellphones have also harmful
effects not only on health but also on academic performance.

In this research, the researchers will find out the level of perception of grade 10 students on the
effects of using cellphones to the academic performance in English subject at Tagumpay National High
School through statistical analysis of our survey. The importance of this study is to find out if the grade
10 students use cellphones efficiently based on their academic performance. The discoveries of this
study will benefit the teachers and students by monitoring the use of mobile phones and to know how to
use cellphones efficiently considering that cellphones play an important role in English subject.

Background of the Study

The cell phone has been one of the quickest developing advancements and necessities in the
world to date. It is an invention that has made the twenty-first century totally not the same as some other
in our history. Mobile devices can be used to enhance classroom learning. Some of the useful features
include the ability to access information, record data, and create podcasts (Chartrand, 2007). They can
also be used as a way to gather data for classroom presentations and enhance interactivity in large
classroom settings (Scomavacca, Huff, and Marshall 2009), and serving as an alternative to “clickers”
used in personal response systems (Pellowe et al., 2014). It is also a trend that mobile devices are
replacing traditional tools such as dictionaries, timers, and digital cameras.
Theoretical Framework

Constructivism Theory by John Dewey

The Constructivism theory emphasizes that the learners working within their mind individually
in order to build their own knowledge, which explains that, the knowledge is not transmitted to them in a
way or another. The most significant change that constructivism theory adapts is the integration of
technology in the education setting. In fact, research has proven the effectiveness of using
constructivism theory on the integration of technology in education. Indeed, constructivism theory has
been able to use technology to serve constructivism principles theory. From these constructivism
methods, the learner works on construct and build their own knowledge on (his/her) prior knowledge
using mobile learning technology.

Multimedia Learning Theory by Richard Mayer

Multimedia learning refers to the use of visual and auditory teaching materials that may include
video, cellphone, and other information technology. Moreover, Multimedia Learning Theory focuses on
the principles that determine the effective use of multimedia in learning, with emphasis on using both
the visual and auditory channels for information processing. In general, this theory highlights that using
multimedia devices such as cellphone to learn is effective because give instructors the ability to
stimulate both the visual and auditory channels of the learner, resulting in better progress.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Foreign Literature

A study by Bianchi et al., using predictors from addiction literature, the study sought to predict
problematic mobile phone usage. It keyed in on factors they believed to cause mobile phone disorders.
195 subjects of both genders and an average age of 36 (ranging from 18-85 years old) were interviewed.
The results lead to the creation of the Mobile Phone Problem Use Scale. This scale was compared to the
Addiction Potential Scale. Fundamentals that were used to compare the scales and create the Mobile
Phone Problem Use Scale were the amount of time one uses their cell phone and the type of usage. The
behavioral predictors that influenced the amount of cell phone usage were: being extraverted, possessing
low self-esteem, and being young. These characteristics were fundamental in determining problematic
cell phone use. The study showed that these behavioral predictors did not influence the amount of cell
phone usage: gender, and neuroticism. The scale developed was designed to help with implementing any
interventions for potential addictive behavior.

In a literature review of Womack, J. & McNamaracell, C., they explored phone use and its
impact on academic performance of students in college classrooms. Statistical data on cell phone use in
the classroom may offer insight into how prevalent the effects of cell phone use are on academic
performance (Olmsted & Terry, 2014). Over 95% of undergraduate students own cell phones, as noted
across multiple studies (Elder, 2013; Olmsted & Terry, 2014; Pettijohn, Frazier, Rieser, Vaughn, &
Hupp-Wilds, 2015). With the widespread ownership of cell phones among students, cell phone usage in
the classroom is probable. Of the students who own cell phones, Froese and colleagues (2012) found
that 75% have their cell phones with them in every class period. Likewise, in a study published in 2012,
Tindell and Bohlander found that even more students, 95%, bring their cell phones to every class
meeting. However, only between 8% and 9% of students turn their phones completely off during class
time (Berry & Westfall, 2015; Tindell & Bohlander, 2012).
Foreign Studies

This research work by Soyemi J., Oloruntoba, S.A. & Okafor B., examined phone usage and
identified the effects internet-enabled mobile phones have on the academic performance of students at
the tertiary institutions using the Federal Polytechnic students of Ilaro, Ogun State in Nigeria as a case
study. The research work was performed so as to understand and also find the correlation between the
academic performance of students and the usage of the mobile phone during class hours which is
generally believed to be an avenue of distractions to students. The information from this work was
carried out using structured questionnaires administered to 45 students to get their individual views. In
addition, 15 extensive interviews were done concurrently to have a grounded knowledge of the students
with the data gathered during the course of this study. Our findings indicated that students are influenced
negatively to a great extent by the mobile phone because attention is focused on chatting, music, and
others while their academic activities are neglected and left to suffer. Also, this study discovered that the
use of mobile phone is uncontrollable among students which are the leading cause of poor academic
performance among students.

Local Literature

Another work by Xinhua, Filipinos are using their mobile phones not only to communicate but
also as mobile computers as well, according to a recent market study. According to Taylor Nelson
Sofres, a global customized research company said in its report that Filipino consumers are not just
using cell phones to call and texting messages and photos, but also as a means to have "internet- on-the-
go," allowing users to be always online. Of the 38,000 respondents in Metro Manila, 75 % of the
respondents surveyed used mobile phones to take photos or videos; 45 % to browse the internet; 44 % to
access their social networking sites, and 37 % to check their emails. The study was conducted from
November 2012 to January 2013. "Based on the findings of the study, the increase in various mobile
activities explain the growing trend of Wi-Fi accessibility in public areas," said TNS Philippines
Managing Director Gary de Ocampo.

According to DO 70, s. 1999 and DO 83, s. 2003 of Department of Education, the use of
cellphones have diverted the attention of students from their studies. Moreover, reports show that text
messaging are causing disturbance to the classes and being used to cheat during examinations. As a
respond, school officials are directed to ensure that text messaging during class hours and within school
premises should be stopped, at very least closely monitored and regulated. Using cellphones in the
classroom without permission or excuse is a minor offense which may lead to confiscation, verbal
reprimand and suspension as stated in student’s handbook at TNHS.

Local Studies

According to a research done by the Eden Strategy Institute, the Filipino society would rather
lose their personal necessities such as soap and shampoo rather than lose internet access and their cell
phones. This shows that the mindset of the younger generation in the country portrays a continuing
transformation — making them more connected to internet and technology daily, compared to the older
generations where access was very limited. In the recent years, the Filipino community has always relied
on weather forecasting, information dissemination, emergency reliefs and rescue equipment that so often
have not been helpful enough. But with the ingenuity of the Department of Science and Technology
(DOST) through the efforts of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services
Administration (PAGASA), a new arsenal has been deployed to accurately detect typhoons and disasters
in an integrated and responsive system: The Project NOAH (Nationwide Operational Assessment of
Hazards). Through Project NOAH, the average Pinoy can receive warnings about incoming floods and
possible evacuations, six hours in advance through the comforts of their mobile phones and laptops. In
the fast-paced society that we live in, technology has also become a focal point in all aspects of human
activity.

Locally, in Davao City, a marketing research study conducted by Berico et al. (2008) showed
that the preference towards features of mobile phones by consumers is high with a grand mean of 4.85.
Among the features mentioned are high-quality built-in camera lenses, music player, and web
connections, these are some of the most advanced features offered by mobile phone makers during those
times. The study also showed that consumers preferred mobile phones which are very portable and
comfortable. This is evident in the handsets that the market has today. Observations revealed that as the
variety of mobile phones emerged the growing popularity of the local brands such as Cherry Mobile and
Myphone has also captured the Davao residents’ liking for their preference of mobile brand.
Synthesis of the Reviewed Literature and Studies

The studies and literature that the researchers bring are a useful device to complete the study.
The foreign and local literature along with the study is somehow associated with each other and is
extremely beneficial in solving the dilemma of this research, which is to determine the effects of the
cellphone to the academic performance in English subject of the grade 10 students at Tagumpay
National High School.

The local literature focused on maximizing the use of cellphones in the public areas of our
country. Additionally, it also demonstrates the rules and regulations governing the use of cellphones in
Tagumpay National High School.

The foreign literature explained the relationship of the prevalence of cellphones to the
harmful physical and psychological effects of mobile phones. It also clarified what makes a cellphone
cause distraction and why does it lower student’s academic performance.

While the local & foreign studies function as a proof that mobile phones are still making
addictions and distractions to the students which make them neglect their academic activities which in
turn, the academic performance suffer. However, the studies also suggest that cellphones are also used to
increase environmental awareness such as PAGASA, & Project NOAH that is used to deliver warnings
on disasters. Furthermore, the studies also showed that the cellphone users in Davao have high
preference towards features of mobile phones especially the ones that are convenient and comfortable,
allowing them to admire high-quality cellphone brands
CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the different procedures utilized in conducting this study.

Research Design

This research work implemented the descriptive survey research design to discover the level of
perception of grade 10 students on the effects of using cellphones to the academic performance in
english subject at Tagumpay National High School.

Population and Sample Size

The population of the research was composed of grade 10 students at Tagumpay National High
School at Rodriguez, Rizal. However, four hundred and thirty-six (436) students in the school were
used as samples.

Sampling Technique Used

The researchers used systematic sampling as a sampling technique since they need simplicity and
an orderly way of conducting research. They applied systematic sampling by picking approximately
95% samples from each section of grade 10 students at Tagumpay National High School.

Description of Respondents

• The respondents are the grade 10 students who are currently studying at Tagumpay National
High School. The respondents serve as the basis of information to know the level of perception
of grade 10 students on the effects of using cellphones to the academic performance in English
subject at Tagumpay National High School.

.
Instrumentation

Scaled survey forms were used to collect information from the respondents. The questionnaires
were only outlined in one section. The survey forms contained effects of cellphones and the respondents
rated each effect from 1-100 depending on how much it affected their academic performance.

The survey forms were built by the researchers and double-checked by an English teacher who
made face validation and also confirmed the consistency of the instrument.

Data Gathering Procedure

Four Hundred and Thirty-Six copies of the questionnaire were created and managed by the
researchers to the grade 10 students at Tagumpay National High School. For the respondents to fully
understand the questionnaire, difficult items in the survey form were explained by the researchers to the
respondents. The answered copies were gathered immediately and kept to avoid loss.

Statistical Treatment of Data

For a clearer interpretation of the data gathered from the survey questionnaire, the researcher
used descriptive statistics by means of frequency graphs; coefficient of variation; and they also ranked
the means of grouped data.

Mean

∑𝑓 The researchers used the mean to rank each effect of

x̄ = cellphones to determine which effect affects the grade 10
𝑛 students’ academic performance the most
Coefficient of variation
The researchers used coefficient of

𝐶𝑉 = 𝑆𝐷/𝑥̅ variation to determine if the standard deviation

have high variation or low variation. A CV greater
than one means high variation but lower than one
is low variation.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary, findings, and conclusions taken from the results of the study.
It also provides recommendations drawn from the conclusions which are deemed important.

Summary

The center of this research was to determine the level of perception of grade 10 students on the
effects of using cellphones to the academic performance in English subject at Tagumpay National High
School S.Y. 2017-2018.

. The researchers also assumed the following hypothesis: The cellphone will increase students'
academicperformance through interactive and visual learning but it will decrease academic performance
if the cellphone usage during English subject is improperly regulated.

This research was conducted at Tagumpay National High School in Rodriguez, Rizal; with a
total of four hundred thirty-six respondents. Descriptive method was employed in this study. The
researchers used scaled-questionnaire method in order to specify the severity of the effect of cellphones
to their academic performance in English subject. After conducting the survey, the researchers ranked
mean and used frequencies to determine the extent of each effect of cellphones to the academic
performance in English subject.

Findings

The findings of the study are as follows:

 Most of the respondents are females with an average of 80-84 and an age ranging from 15
to 16.
 The good effects have a higher average mean than that of the bad effects. Therefore, the
cellphones have more beneficial uses to the grade 10 students that can improve their
academic performance than the harmful effects of cellphones that can lower their
academic performance.
 Using cellphones for online classes significantly increases the academic performance
while cellphone dependency among students greatly lowers the academic performance in
English subject.

Conclusions

To conclude, cellphoneis an important device with a lot of functions that are carried by a regular
student. This concluded study had strongly shown that the cellphones have more beneficial uses to the
grade 10 students that can improve their academic performance than the harmful effects of cellphones
that can lower their academic performance.

Recommendations

Based on this research work, the following recommendations were developed:

 English Teachers. The rules and regulations regarding the use of cellphones in English
class should be properly regulated to avoid distractions to the students that raise learning
capability in English subject.
 Students. The Grade 10 students should follow and be aware of rules and regulations
regarding the use of cellphones during English class to increase their academic
performance.
 Future Researchers. This study only focused on the grade 10 students of Tagumpay
National High School, so future researchers should make a similar research work but the
study is carried on a wider scope. The researchers should also make the same study but it
uses different factors affecting the use of cellphones such as: cellphone time usage, levels
of participation, teachers’ skill level and others.
