Types of Paper = The independent

Number of folds = depended

The purpose of this investigation is to determine if the type of paper will affect its
number of fold. Paper should only be folded in halves until it can no longer be folded.
This is a simple investigation use to introduce the scientific method to students without
costly materials. Below is a simple report to the investigation

Title: The effect of different types of paper on the number of folds

Teacher’s note: The underlined phrases are the variables, Independent variable and
dependent variable. Discuss the constants from this investigation such as the size of the
paper, the person folding, how the paper is being folded (should only be folded in half
continuously till it can no longer be folded)
Question or Problem Statement: How does the types of paper affect the number of
folds
Literature review: For research, I normally allow the student to conduct a quick
research on the problem. There is a Chinese understanding that no paper can be folded
more than 7 times. Students need to understand that research is the second step in the
scientific process.
Hypothesis: If the paper is thicker, then the number of folds will be greater.
Materials: List all the materials needed to conduct the investigation including but not
limited to:
1. Construction paper
2. Tissue paper
3. Printing paper
4. Scissors
5. Rulers
Procedures: Have the students write down their own procedures. Procedures should
be clear and precise. They should be written in numerical order.
1. Fold the paper in half and then fold in half and half.
2. Until you can’t fold it any more
3. Then write you result on a paper

Teacher’s Note: Students will now conduct the investigation. They will collect their
data and record in a data table.

Types of paper Number of folds Average Number of folds

Tissue Paper 7 8 8 8
Construction Paper 7 7 7 7
Printing paper 6 7 7 7
Other paper 5 6 6 6

Result: Students will state the result of the investigation.

Conclusion: Answer the following questions in paragraph(1) format:

1. What was being investigated
2. What was your hypothesis
3. How was the experiment conducted?
4. What was the result?
5. Was the hypothesis supported
6. What are your recommendations?
