Background of the study

Technology has a big contribution in our daily lives especially internet. It makes things easy, for example,

instead of searching things in book, you can easily search it via Google. Also, you can make friends in the

internet through social media like Facebook.

Facebook is a social application that makes easy for people to connect with their family and friends

online. Mark Zuckerberg created and design Facebook in 2004 for college students while he was studying

at Harvard University. In 2006, any person over the age of 13 with a valid email address could join or

sign up in Facebook. Today, Facebook is the world’s largest social network. Sarah Philips (2007)

Daniel Sparks (2017) said that Facebook is the most used application for socializing with almost two

billion users (1.9 billion) average of 30% of the world’s population. But many Facebook user use it

excessively, according to Social Media Management Platform Hoot suite (2017), Philippines is the

number one in terms of time spent on social media with four hours and seventeen minutes (4 hours & 17

minutes) followed by Brazil with three hours and forty-three minutes (3 hours and 43 minutes) and

Argentina with three hours and 32 minutes (3 hours and 32 minutes) while in United States where many

social media users were found, they only spent two hours and six minutes ( 2 hours & 6 minutes) per day

and the least active country is Japan that they only spent forty minutes ( 40 minutes) a day.

According to the American Psychological Association, excessive use of Facebook has a negative impact

on teen’s mental health. In addition, too much time spent on Facebook can cause anxiety and depression

in teens. Excessive use of Facebook can increase a teens likely hood of experiencing cyber bullying.

5
Statistical research conducted by “Consumer Reports” shows that in 2011, One million children were

harassed, threatened or subjected to other forms of cyber bullying on Facebook.

A professor in psychology at California State University, Larry Rosen (2013) says students who use

Facebook do worse in school, even if they check their account in at least fifteen (15) minutes, they will

get a low grade. But he also said that there are benefits too. Social applications especially Facebook help

students to develop their identities and enhance their ability to socialize with others.

Significance of the study

The significance of this study is to know the effects of the application Facebook to the studies of the

students because many of them in these days lose their focus on studying because of that it has a big

effect on their grades through examinations. This study will help the students to be aware on using

Facebook excessively and their time on studying and also to guide them on how they should use

Facebook properly without affecting their grades in examinations.

This research will also be benefited by the following:

Students- This research is conducted especially for the students because they are the most affected by the

application Facebook. They are also the one who will benefit this study because it can help them to be

aware in using Facebook excessively and to have their focus on studying so that it can’t affect their grades

in their exams.

Parents- They will also benefit this study not only because they also use Facebook but because they also

have a child that is also a student and they can use this research for them to know what they should teach

to their children so that he/she can focus on his/her studies.

6
Scope and limitation

This study aims to answer the question on effect of Facebook in the examination of student in core

subject. The samples are the selected grade 9 students of Ernesto Rondon High School. This research will

only associate the examination scores of the unit and Periodical Test of the students. The researchers

conducted this study at Ernesto Rondon High School during second grading period.

The data that the researchers use in their research will be obtained through a ten (10) item questionnaire.

It will determine if the user is excessive, average or mild user of Facebook. After that, the researcher will

gather the scores in second grading periodicals of their respondents to the subject teachers to know if

there’s an effect.

Hypotheses:

Alternative:

1. There’s an effect on the grades of the students in core subjects when Facebook is used for

hours

2. There’s a difference between the students who use Facebook excessively and the students

who don’t on their grades

3. It can improve the student’s grade

Null:

1. There’s no effect on the grades of the students in core subjects when Facebook is used for

hours

7
2. There’s no difference between the students who use Facebook excessively and the students

who don’t on their grades

3. It can’t improve the student’s grade.

Advantages of Facebook to the Students learning.

Facebook as a learning tool.

Facebook can help students to have a discussion which are taken from the classroom. Students

have the ability to share ideas and help one another in problem solving and understanding

particular concepts even if they are not in the same place. Teachers can also post an article or any

educational video which can help them in their discussions and can reflect positively to the

student’s work. Facebook also allow students to be updated on a current information and news

about their discussions in school and expand their knowledge in education. (hall, 2014)

Communication between Students and Teachers.

Facebook can connect teachers and students that can help a student increase their grades through

sharing each other’s information even outside the classroom because they can easily use

Facebook anytime and anywhere. It is also a way for students to reflect on the knowledge

learned in the classroom. Using Facebook, can offer an articles, videos or link that students can

respond and benefit it. (economist, 2012)

Disadvantages of Facebook to the Students.

Facebook as a negative impact for the grades.

Facebook can be benefit by the students to expand their knowledge but it also has a negative

effect on a student’s grade as a result of procrastination and distraction. Instead of learning,

students switch to other things like browsing other people’s posts and they didn’t mind that they

are already losing their time to school works and it guides them in becoming a Facebook addict.

11
Facebook Addiction

Addiction is a condition that results when a person ingest a substance or engages in an

activity can be pleasurable but the contribution of which becomes compulsive and interferes with

ordinary responsibilities and concerns. People who have developed an addiction may not be

aware that their behavior is out of control and causing problems for themselves and others.

However, most addictive behavior is not related to either physical tolerance or exposure

to cues. People commonly use drugs, gamble, or shop compulsively in reaction to being stressed,

whether or not they have physical addiction.

When referring to any kind of addiction, it is important to recognize that the cause is not

a search for pleasure and that addiction has nothing to do with one’s morality or strength of

character. Expert debate whether addiction is a “disease” or a true mental illness, whether drug

dependence and addiction mean the same thing and many other aspects of addiction. (psychology

today n.d)

Signs that make a person Facebook addict.

Here are some indicators that a person is a Facebook addict. First, if he/she spend two or

more hours in doing Facebook alone. Second, instead of doing chores or play with friends,

he/she chose to change his/her profile picture on social media. Third, he/she feels anxious,

nervous, or guilty when he/she didn’t update his/her profile picture in three to four times a day.

Lastly, he/she take his/her phone just to update his/her status. (Walker,2017)

According to Psych guides (2017) The Facebook addiction is manifested in both physical and

emotional symptoms.

12
Emotional Symptoms of Facebook Addiction.

The following symptoms are typical for Facebook addicts: Feeling of guilt when a person

did not update his/her Facebook status, anxiety, depression when he/she didn’t open his/her

Facebook in a few hours, dishonesty, euphoric feeling when in front of the computer, losing time

management, isolation, defensiveness and avoiding household chores are the other symptoms.

Physical Symptoms of Facebook Addiction.

The following symptoms are characteristic of someone who uses Facebook for a very

long period of time: Backache, headache, weight gain or loss, disturbance in sleep, carpal tunnel

syndrome, blurred or stained vision.

The short-term effects of Facebook addiction include unfinished tasks, forgotten

responsibilities and weight gain. Long term effects of Facebook addiction. are seen more in

physical symptoms such as backache, neck pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and vision problems

from starting at the screen.

Signs of Facebook Addiction.

According to Dr. Brent Conrad the signs of Facebook addiction can be broken down into

psychological and physical signs.

Psychological signs of Facebook Addiction.

After spending too much time on Facebook he/she is feeling guilt , great difficulty

avoiding the internet for the recreational use for more than a few days in a row, often losing time

management, strong feelings of frustration or tension when unable to go online just to accept and

update Facebook status, loss of interest and participation in hobbies or activities that were once

13
enjoyed, feeling calm, content or happy only when online and often experiencing negative mood

when not on the internet.

Physical Signs of Internet Addiction.

A person might gain or loss weight due to poor eating habits and lack of physical

activities, headaches, neck pains, back problems, tired, dry and/or red eye.

Reasons why Facebook is so Addictive.

Many people nowadays are addict in Facebook and her are the causes of it. First,

Facebook user allows themselves to catch up with their relatives in a minimal effort, the users

can share information about themselves and can communicated with others. Also, Facebook

gives the users information about what’s happening. (Dr. Conrad,2015)

The Benefit and Disadvantages of Facebook.

According to Barricella (2012) Facebook has also benefits to people. It helps user to keep

in touch to their friends or relatives and makes conversation easier to others. It also helps them to

make new friends. Also, Facebook help us shared our information, opinion and ideas to others.

However, Facebook has also disadvantages, it can cause cyberbullying on any other

people, it can ruin relationship among couples, and it can be a source of distraction on things you

must do first.

Benefit and Disadvantages of Facebook to Students.

The disadvantage of Facebook to students is even if they check their accounts in fifteen

minutes, research shows that it can lower their grades and also their rate in reading retention.

However, Facebook has good impact also, it helps the shy type persons interact and

socialize among others. It can also affect self-esteem and self-identity of a person in a positive

way.

14
Impact of Social Media to High School Students.

According to Garcia (2016) the common negative effects that Facebook has on high

school students were distraction and cyberbullying. One of the students have been examine says

that the internet distracts them from things they need to do like homework or household chores.

Also, it can cause cyberbullying which is regularly discuss by teenagers because it is a viral

topic.

However, there is also good effect according to the students who has been examine,

social networking allows them to interact with others and to educate themselves or important

topics.

Dr. Larry Rosen, a psychologist says “one found that people who are interrupted by

technology score 20 percent lower on a standard cognition test. A second demonstrated that

some students even when on their best behavior can’t concentrate on homework for more than

two minutes without distracting themselves by using social media or writing an email”

Teachers blame social networking site Facebook for student’s poor grades. According to

the report, children who spent too much online find it difficult to concentrate in class, tend to be

distracted or have shorter attention spans. Student’s homework is also affected by the application

Facebook because they are more willing to use Facebook instead of studying.

According to Janie Burt (2017) this research clearly demonstrate that students up down

the country are spending more and more time using social media rather than relying on life

experiences. Children are becoming obsessed with social networking and this is shaping their

attitude instead.

16
METHODOLOGY

17
Research Method

The Researchers used the Descriptive Method in this study. This study is considered to be

a Descriptive Research because this study uses brief interview or discussion with an individual

about a specific topic and it uses survey forms. According to (Kendra Cherry, 2017) a survey is

a way to collect data or gather information about specific things. Surveys are commonly used to

gather self-report data from selective participants. A survey may take factual information or

opinions of survey participants; it is the most common instrument use for descriptive research.

Descriptive Method is designed for collecting data without changing the environment, this is also

referred as “correlational” or “observational” studies (suunders, M., Lewis, P. & Thornhill, A.,

2012)(Yech, 2014). Collection of data is used to test the hypothesis or to answer questions about

the subject of the study. Since the study is about the effects of Facebook to the examination of

students in core subjects, the Descriptive method is the most appropriate way to use.

Sampling technique

The Sampling technique used by the researchers in this study is the Convenience

Sampling. “Convenience sampling (also known as availability sampling) is a specific type of non-

probability sampling method that relies on data collection from population members who are

conveniently available to participate in study” (Saunders et al). Each subject has an equal probability

of being chosen and it should be unbiased (Coleman, 2018). Since this study focused in Grade 9

students of Ernesto Rondon High School, the researchers used three (3) sections in Grade 9

randomly which are Archimedes, Aristotle, and Wright. The students in this sections are used as

participants in the study

18
Preparation of the Survey Forms

The researcher searched for example of questionnaire about the effects of Facebook in

the grades of students and made a 10 item quiz for their survey form, after that, the researcher

searched for at least three (3) validators to review and check their surveys if it’s capable to be

sued as a survey. The Researchers need a total of 90 students from Ernesto Rondon High School.

This will be divided into three (3) sections, Archimedes, Aristotle, and Wright. Each section has

different number of Students. 9-Archimedes has 32 students, Aristotle has 23 students and

Wright has 35 students. In preparing the survey forms, the researchers made 10 questions that the

researcher put in the questionnaire, Since the study is about the Effects of Facebook in the

Examination of Students in Core subjects, the researchers made a questions about how Facebook

affect the students.

Distributing of the survey form to the students

After the questionnaires was made, the researchers will distribute it to the three (3)

sections (Archimedes, Aristotle, Wright) and give the questionnaires to the students from 9-

Archimedes, Aristotle and Wright and let them answer the question in the survey form. The

participants had to put their name, gender, and section of the respondents and had to answer the

survey form, the choices are 5(Always), 4(Often), 3(Sometimes), 2(Rarely), and 1(Not at all).

19
Method of Collecting Data

The data of the study will be based on the answer of the participants in the survey form.

The answer of each participant on the survey form5(Always), 4(Often), 3(Sometimes),

2(Rarely), and 1(Not at all) is summed up and the data will be based on the total score, based on

a specific form, students who score 10-24 are mild users, 25-32 are average users, and 33 above

are excessive users. The researchers used the questionnaires in collecting the Data. Using this

method, researchers can easily gather the data and it is faster than any other methods. Using

questionnaire is the most suitable method to use in gathering data in this study.

Evaluating the survey form

After conducting the survey to the different students of different sections, the researchers

gathered up all the survey forms and check if the target number of students are complete. The

gathered information will be going to statistical analysis to determine the effects of Facebook to

the examination of Grade 9 students in core subjects. Based on the survey forms that the

participants have answered, 53 of the participants are mild users, 20 are average users, and 17 are

excessive users. The researchers planned to evaluate the data by doing a bar graph to compare

the average scores of the excessive, average, and mild users

Overview

This chapter focuses on the results and analysis of data about the effects of Facebook to the examination

of students in core subjects. This chapter will be focusing on the results and analysis of data that obtained

by the researchers about the effects of Facebook to the examination of students in core subjects. The

given survey forms will be used to obtain the results and analyze the data

Using the survey forms, the researchers wants to know if using Facebook can affect the 2nd grading

periodical test of the students in core subjects. The researchers conducted a survey in selected section

using convenience method. The researcher will only choose a subject who a subject who is available in

After the selective grade nine (9) students answer the survey forms, the researcher tallies the scores of

each student to know their level of addiction. The researcher will also answer the question mentioned in

the statement of the problem

CHAPTER V

33
Summary:

This research study focuses on the effects of Facebook to the examination of students.

Researchers observed that there are many students are using Facebook. They want to know if Facebook

has an effect to the grades of students. The purpose of this study is to give information to the students that

they should know that Facebook can affect their academic grades. Thus, this research study focuses on

how Facebook affects the academic grades of students. Researchers gather information, articles about the

possible effects of Facebook to the students. Facebook has different impact to students, it can increase

their grades but can also decrease it. This research study will give knowledge to the students about the

Effects of Facebook to their grades. The Researchers used the convenience method in getting the subjects

in this descriptive study. Researches used three (3) sections in Grade 9 which are available and each

student will answer a ten (10) item questionnaire. In preparing the survey forms, researchers searched for

validators to correct and validate each question. The researchers used ninety (90) students overall as their

subject from three (3) different sections to be their respondents. After conducting the survey, the

researchers gather all data and add each subject scores and item analyzed it to know if they are mild,

average, or excessive user of Facebook. After the researchers analyze their data, they found out that the

excessive users have a high scoring average than the mild in both math and science subjects while in

English, mild users are little higher than excessive users so the researchers concluded that excessive use

of Facebook has no effect on a student’s grade

Conclusion

This descriptive study shows that excessive use of Facebook has no effect to the grades of the of

the grade 9 students of Ernesto Rondon High School this results to inversely proportional because the

grades of the students who use Facebook excessively is not low as expected by the researchers according

to their hypothesis while the mild Facebook users has lower grades than the students who use Facebook

excessively, this include that the use of Facebook cannot affect the grades of the grade 9 students

34
Recommendation

The researchers recommend the other researchers who will use the similar topic for their research

is to test the reliability of their survey form so that their research study will be successful. Also they think

other factors that can affect the grades of students in using Facebook.
