PERMISSIBLE COMPRESSIVE STRESS AS PER IRC:40-1970

The permissible compressive stress depends upon the crushing strength of the structural units, viz.
bricks, blocks or stones, the grade of mortar used and they shall be related to the values given in Table

Basic stress in Mpa corresponding to units, viz.

Mortar mix (parts) by Hardening time after
Bricks, blocks, or stones whose average crushing
volume comletion of Work
strength (in Mpa) is
Cement Sand Days 10.5 14.1 21.1 28.1 35.2 or greater

1 4 14 0.9 1.1 1.5 1.9 2.2
1 5 14 0.9 1.0 1.4 1.7 2.0

1 Linear interpolation is permissible for units whose crushing strength is intermediate bet-
ween those given in the table.
2 For masonry in well foundation the cement sand mortar shall not be linear than 1:3
For random rubble masonry, the permissible stresses given in table shall be reduced by one- third
For coursed rubble and ashlar masonry, the stress value given in table shall hold good
For arch rings, the permissible stress shall be in accordance with those given in table subject to a
maximum of 1.6 Mpa
1 Mpa = 1x106 N/m2 = 100 t/m2

PERMISSIBLE TENSILE STRESS AS PER IRC:40-1970

The allowable flexural tensile stress in brick, stone or block masonry shall be according as under ;-
