UNDER THE AEGIS OF FOUNDATION FOR INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER (FITT), IIT DELHI

The Foundation of Innovation and Technology Transfer, IIT Delhi hosts an Internship Program in
Engineering Innovation and Design for Undergraduate / Postgraduate students in any branch of the
Electrical Sciences e.g. Electrical Engg, Electronics with Telecommunication / Communications,
Computer Science, Instrumentation, Opto-electronics etc.

This Internship Programme is a distinctly different internship program from the IIT Delhi Summer
Research Internship Program which has a limited intake. This internship program will accept any student
selected under the IITD Summer Research Program with no charges (no application fee, no handling
charges and no internship fee will be charged).

Eligibility: Applications are invited (typically) from Students who are registered in a recognized
Engineering Institute / College / deemed University in a Engineering Discipline in the Electrical Sciences
(Electrical Engg, Computer Science, Electronics, Communication / Telecommunication, Instrumentation
and allied Electrical Sciences) and are either
 pre-final / final year UG (must have completed at least four semesters / 2 years of required course
work at the start of Internship)
 or PG (must have completed at least two semesters / 1 year of required course work) students who
are registered in a recognized educational Institute
 graduates / post-graduates in a engineering discipline related to Electrical Sciences
A Certificate of Completion (and a separate Certificate of Performance, only if registered as a Casual
Student) will be given to each participant from FITT after completion of minimum internship.

Duration: The Internship Program will be run with the following minimum attendance requirements:
 during teaching semesters, minimum four months
 during summer semesters, minimum two months

Structure: Every Intern, regardless of the area of work / choice of faculty mentor will be trained in
product development lifecycle, project management, software tools, hardware design tools and software,
and presentation skills. This will be followed by a student specific project. A weekly feedback session
will be held.

Benefits: The Internship Program will provide undergraduate (BE/BTech) students and postgraduate
students of Engineering (for the moment, only Engineering Streams in the Electrical Sciences) a unique
opportunity to work with professional teams inside IIT Delhi and to forge life-long contacts with the
1|Page
Bharti School of Telecom Technology and Management in IIT Delhi. All interns will be mentored and
integrated into engineering teams and live research / sponsored projects with outstanding Faculty from
IIT Delhi. The period of internship is expected to be a unique work experience with the research
community in IIT Delhi.

Canvassing: We receive a large number of applications to each batch and try to provide a best match of
the applicant to the faculty research interest. Where such a match cannot be identified, the application is
not accepted. Any candidate canvassing for entry into the program by any means is liable to be
summarily disqualified.

Administration: The program will be organized by the Foundation of Innovation and Technology Transfer
(FITT), IIT Delhi – for more details about FITT, see www.fitt-delhi.org . The Coordinator of the
Internship Program will be Prof.Subrat Kar, Professor, EE Dept / Bharti School of Telecom.

If selected, a non-refundable fee of Rs.7000 (equivalent in Indian Rupees for applicants from outside
India) for the first month of mandatory internship stay and Rs.3000 per month thereafter will be charged
by FITT as operational charges. For instance, during a Batch-3 internship (July – Dec), a minimum stay
of 4 months is mandatory and thus a operational fee of Rs.17000 (Rs.5000 for first month + Rs.3000 for
second month + Rs.3000 for third month + Rs.3000 for fourth month) will be charged. Similarly for a
Batch-2 (Summer) internship, a minimum stay of 2 months is mandatory and thus an operation fee of
Rs.10000 will be charged (Rs.7000 for the first month and Rs.3000 for the second month).

There will be no fee for (a) KVPY Fellows and KVPY Summer Camp Fellows (also see note below
regarding KVPY Summer Camp Fellows) and (b) Interns selected under IIT Delhi’s Institute Internship
Schemes (such as IITD Summer Research Fellowship) who opt for this Internship scheme (all relevant
rules to those schemes will apply as per norms) or for (c) Indian Academy of Sciences Fellows. KVPY
students will pay only for their boarding and lodging in IITD hostels and claim a refund from KVPY
Office.

KVPY Summer Camp Interns will pay no application fee and no operational fee when they come in
summer. However, if KVPY-Summer Camp interns apply for the internship during non-summer
batches, full application fees and full handling fees will have to be paid.

IITD Summer interns will be supported as per IITD norms. Indian Academy of Sciences Interns will be
supported as per MoU. Students applying under PHOCOS Research Alliance of IITD-IITB-IISc-
ISP/CUSAT will not be charged the Application Fee & may apply for waiver/refund of Internship Fee
(however, hostel accommodation is on availability basis only).

 Multiple Students from same Institution: All applications need a NOC from the T&P Officer and must
be forwarded through the T&P Officer only. If the number of applicants is more than two, the T&P
Officer must collect all applications, conduct an internal selection with the results tabulated in the
Consolidated Merit List format and forward all applications (together, in one envelope) along with the
signed Consolidated Merit List. The method of selection and justification for the merit list must be
mentioned along with special remarks if any. Multiple applications from the same organization which do
not follow this procedure or are submitted separately without any Consolidated Merit List are liable to be
rejected without assigning any further reasons. Applications from more than two students from the same
Institute which have been forwarded through TPOs without a Consolidated Merit List will be summarily
rejected and will have to be re-submitted afresh as fresh applications with full processing fees to be paid
again and with the CML enclosed.

1 DST WOS-A / WOS-B / Disha Fellowship are described in http://dst.gov.in/scientific-programme/women-scientists.htm

6|Page
In certain Institutions, we have Liaison Faculty colleagues who perform this selection. Applications from
those institution must be forwarded through them (they will conduct the internal selection test above).

No direct applications / emailed applications from self-supported students will be entertained. They must
be forwarded by either the T&P Section or the Head of the Department of the concerned student or the
Liaison Faculty of that Institute. After T&P issues a NOC, the Liaison Faculty should conduct an internal
selection, counsel students on their project interests for a best-match and then forward a consolidated
merit list of all students to the Coordinator of the GIPEDI Program.

Only the following Institutes / organisations have a liaison faculty at the moment with the GIPEDI (see
below).

 Fee Waiver Clause: Any candidate submitting proof (income tax return / Notarized Certificate from
Tahsildar) of an annual income (of both parents/guardians/custodians, from all sources of income) of less
than Indian Rupees 120000 /year shall be considered for a partial waiver of application and handling
fees.

 Roll-over Facility: Any intern has the one-time option to re-apply and be selected to continue for the
next batch (this is called the “internship period roll-over option” and can be exercised any number of
times with the appropriate extended payments being made) – depending on the performance in the
internship, the fee may be waived / reduced in these cases. The roll-over facility is only considered if the
Faculty Supervisor agrees to the roll-over.
The minimum number of academic contact hours is the same number of hours as a B.Tech / M.Tech
project within IIT Delhi (for Interns who stay within 40 kms of IIT Delhi). Interns who stay outside 40
kms of IIT Delhi must stay full-time (the letter of no-objection from their parent Institute includes a
clause that this will be allowed as a part of their normal academic schedule).

 Returnship / Flexinternship Facility: The Returnship is a unique program designed to allow any
professional – especially women - who are eager to return to active careers after a mid-career break. It
allows mid-career professionals to test their fit to new careers in different fields in a graded sand box
environment. It allows such individuals to choose a period of training (typically two to three months for
which they pay a fee), followed by a period of paid internship (ranging from two to twelve months or
more in which we utilize their newly acquired services and pay them a stipend back). It allows for a
ramp-up period and then an experience gaining period at your own pace, in your time with the provision
of flexi-time. We provide graded levels of mentorship and we hand-hold the returnee through the return to
a full-time professional career.

7|Page
A special case of the Returnship Scheme (Category S.1) is reserved for professional women engineers
who have had gap years due to family reasons. On a case to case basis, we provide counseling and hosting
assistance for applicants in the DST KIRAN (WOS-A, WOS-B/SoRF, DISHA and Mobility Fellowship)
schemes. WOS-C applicants are not supported at this moment due to our lack of facilities. More details
are available on the DST web site -
http://www.dst.gov.in/scientific-programmes/scientific-engineering-research/women-scientists-programs

 Gap Internship Facility: The Gap Internship is for students who have availed of a gap year while
remaining on the rolls of a recognized Academic Institution in India or for professionals who are taking a
gap year for changing their domain of work. It is also applicable to fresh graduates / postgraduates who
are waiting for an admission / posting / job / placement (i.e. those who are on-the-bench) – you are
requested to file a self-attested copy of your offer letter if you have one as proof of the next program in
support of your application. Applications will be considered on a case to case basis.

 Reverse Internship Facility: The Reverse Internship is meant to associate interns with specific advanced
expertise in a particular area with a faculty who wishes to pose a problem in that area. For example, a
student who is very proficient at animation could be associated with a Faculty Member who requires a
particular animation to be completed. Applicants will be considered on a case to case basis. Flexitime and
payment for successfully completed projects will also be considered.

 Affirmative action: We recognize that there are circumstances in which the educational initiative of the
applicant needs to be encouraged. We therefore have no application fees + partial operation fee waivers
for students (Category S.2) who have been educated through any rural school at the primary or secondary
levels or Satya Bharti schools run by the Bharti Foundation, Shiv Nadar Trust and the Sampark
Foundation. If there have been circumstances which should be noted while considering your application,
you are requested to provide full details by adding a page to your application as an enclosure titled
“Special Circumstances”.

 Confidentiality / Non-disclosure Agreement: Any part of your work which is considered classified/
confidential / proprietary or is performed under a non-disclosure agreement must be expunged from your
submitted Project Report if advised by your Project Supervisor or the Coordinator, GIPEDI. A Non-
Disclosure Agreement (NDA) may have to be signed by the applicant at the beginning of the project to
this effect.

Training Methodology: The selected participants will be trained through a rigorous hands-on procedure on
projects in engineering design and innovation. The program will be through exposure to actual on-going
research projects and student projects in various Departments /Centers /Schools of IIT Delhi through
Faculty / Staff participating in this internship Program.

Stipends: A few of the participants in some projects will be supported through internship stipends. All
applicants in all categories are eligible to apply for such stipends. The amount of the stipend will depend
on the project and will be decided by the Principal Investigator.

Areas: We welcome applicants in any area related to the Electrical Sciences (provided Faculty Mentors
exist). Some of the representative areas are: (a) Embedded Systems – RTOS, hardware / software co-
design, UML programming, SDLC based concepts, advanced data structures, microcontroller based
design, device driver development, smart camera systems (b) Network Security and Management:
Router hardware/software implementation, embedded multiple proxy server design, Intrusion detection
systems and network hardened systems, network management and network entity fabrication (c)
