INTRODUCTION:
This is the 2ND day of my field survey in the 2nd semester under the PGD WASH course in Tata
Institute of social sciences (Tuljapur). On that day I visit to Sastur village for seen the SPARSH
hospital. The whole programme arranged by our programme officer On 28th September, 2019. A
batch of 20 students along with a faculty member had visited the Sastur village.

The visit started at 8: 30 am from College. On that day we will go on the bus to reach the field. I
reached there around 10: 30 am. We were welcomed by the staff of SPARSH hospital. First of all
Mr. Ramesh Joshi (Project Manager) of SPARSH hospital gives us lots of information about the
SPARSH hospital & PRIDE India Organization. The organization started in 1982. Under this
organization there is a SPARSH hospital. The hospital started in 15th June 1996. The total area of
this hospital are is 10 acre. Under the hospital campus there is a Kitchen garden, Herbal garden,
Rain water harvesting and Water recycling unit are present. After looking all the things we came
back TISS campus at 3.30 P.M.

SELECTION OF STUDY AREA:


Sastur is a Village in Lohara Taluka in Osmanabad District of Maharashtra State, India. It belongs to
Marathwada region. It belongs to Aurangabad Division. It is located 57 KM towards East from District
headquarters Osmanabad. At a distance of approximate 58 km from Tata Institute of Social Sciences,
Tuljapur Campus.
The field visit was conducted on 28th September 2019.

ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT DURING THE FIELD WORK VISIT:
The primary activity carried out was the observation of the SPARSH hospital are as follows-

I) SPARSH (Sastur Project Of Action Research Services Through Hospital):


Sastur Project of Action Research Services through Hospital started in 1996. After earthquake in 1994
the hospital open in 1996. Mrs. Vipula Kadri founder of PRIDE India. In 1996 first SPARSH has 10
beded hospital. It became the first public private model working with the government & private as
NGO called PRIDE India- SPARSH. SPARSH is a very well equipped. More than 180 villages
patient are came in this hospital.

Departments:
The departments of this hospital are-
OPD (Outpatient department), Pathological labotary, Diagnostic facility- Digital X- RAY, ECG,
USG, Pharmacy, Blood collection room, Dental clinic, ICTC (Integrated Counselling & Testing
Centre for HIV), Blood collection room, Dental clinic, NBSU- New born stabilization unit, Major &
Minor operation theatre, Central medical store, Blood storage unit, In patient ward female/male.
Doctor’s consultation rooms, Virula post-natal care ward, community care centre (CCC).

II) Outreach Programs:


The main motive behind starting the out reach programme was to provide adequate health care. In
Osmanabad more than 30% are BPL. The Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) van comes every 15 days
interval on a village. Covering 2 village a day. In MMU first do the registration after registration
patient enters the MMU. The first chamber is the doctors chamber after infection the patient moves
on the other section. As they move on as per the prescription they either go to the injectable section
or get down from the MMU, to collect medicines from the pharmacist. MMU service at just 30 rupees.

III) Support & Care of People Living With HIV/AIDS:


Under PRIDE India there is a project of Support & Care of People Living With HIV/AIDS. Under
this project, there is a training centre, VIHAAN care & support centre. CCC centre, Livelihood
support for single women living with HIV, Support for ORPHAND children (HIV) infected. 5200
patient have registered in CCC. Were 3850 people were women and near about 10% were children.

Doctors:
Pae diatric, Surgical and Gynaecologist, Physiotherapist, Phycologist and Nurse.

Staff:
45 full time staff, 8 senior nurse.

IV) Rainwater harvesting Structure:

 At first, Rainwater collected in a primary tank.


 Then water goes through the four-chamber tank.
 Then water stored in a concrete constructed tank. Here one pipe is connected
into the ground. Water is purified through rope rolled pipe and percolated into
the ground.

V) REED BED SYSTEM:
Reed bed System provides an aquatic plant to allow the bacteria, fungi for treatment of waste or
sewage water. It is a very natural process. At first, wastewater comes from different places and
pour on the bed. Then water percolated down through this bed and become purifier. Below the soil
layer gravel is present through which water percolated. Then water stored into a primary tank and
passes to secondary tank. Then there was a water vortex system is present through which solid
particles of water settle down and due to aeration, no odour was formed. After treat the water ready
to use for gardening.

Awards:
I) Kayakalp Award:
SPARSH received the runner up award at the state level Kayakalp award intended to encourage and
incentivize public health facilities in the country to demonstrate high levels of cleanliness, hygiene
and infection control practices.

II) Certificate of Excellence:


Certificate of excellence for highest number of high risk deliveries by government of Maharastra.

III) Prerna Award:


PRIDE India receives the “Prerna Award” for excellence in community participation by child-fund
India.

IV) Punyashloka Ahilya Devi Holkar Award:


PRIDE India SPARSH rural hospital received state level “Punyashloka Ahilya Devi Holkar Award”
for the best services in mother and child welfare.

V) Dr. Anand Bai Joshi Gaurav Puraskar:


SPARSH rural hospital won the Dr. Anand Bai Joshi Gaurav Puraskar from govt of Maharastra for
the best rural hospital and best services to mother and child.

LEARNINGS:
I) understand the functioning of SPARSH hospital and got the opportunity to visit the SPARSH
hospital.
II) Understand the ground water recharge technique.
III) Observed and understood the functioning of Reed Bed System for treatment of Waste water including
both Black & Grey water.

IV) To understand the SPARSH hospital rain water harvesting technique.


V) Moreover we learn about the discipline being carried by staffs of the hospital.
VI) In SPARSH hospital both solid and liquid waste are properly managed. Also it is a zero waste
produce hospital in Maharastra.

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION:


The SPARSH Rural Hospital is a PPP model of referral unit and it is working properly till date. It does not
waste any of its waste water, rather it uses all the treated water for cultivating crops and the manure as
compost for the cultivation. All the Government programs and schemes are presently working and acceptable
at the hospital. It was really a useful visit. The information we gathered here was very helpful for our
future. The visit was very good and I learn lots of things.
