Building Momentum
I wasn’t supposed to be on the roof, but I didn’t know any better. (Sort of.) When
the owner of the house I’d rented near downtown Naples was having some work
done last year, my curiosity required a clandestine ascent. So I scaled the ladder
to take a look, much to the horror of the surprised general contractor, who feared
that I’d plummet to certain death on his watch. (I thought he’d gone to lunch.) To
lighten the mood, I joked that I was scouting locations for a new Beyoncé music
video, “All the Shingle Ladies.” He wasn’t amused. But I got an idea.
With construction booming on the Paradise Coast, why not talk to some of
the most powerful women in the industry, the real Shingle Ladies? Meet Gay
Thompson, whose father’s firm built the Hertz Arena in Estero (plus 18 more are-
nas in Florida, including the BB&T Center in Sunrise and the American Airlines
Arena in Miami); Heather Henning, a fourth-generation builder whose compa-
ny is pounding nails all over Naples; and Collier Building Industry Association
board member Cali Clardy. Their stories begin on page 58.
As the world continues to discover what we already know—that Naples is an
enviable blend of boundless generosity, understated sophistication, and natural
beauty—the demand for home-related resources grows. Enter the Naples Design
District, a retail and dining destination that caters to those seeking upscale decor,
art, fashion, and on-trend treasures. To learn more about the district, including
10 merchants not to miss, turn to page 74. Also this month, take a moment to rel-

MEGAN DIPIERO
ish the talent of eight Naples-based interior designers. Whether you’re ponder-
ing a luxurious lanai, a dynamic dining room (purple!), or an ethereal bedroom
for seaside-themed slumber, we have your inspiration, beginning on page 80.
While the latest home and design trends reflect Naples’ cosmopolitan vibe,
there’s still an enduring respect for the vintage aesthetic of yesteryear. Nowhere is this more evi-
dent than at the flamingo pink Gondolier Inn, a downtown charmer recently renovated by new
owners, including Keble Pryce, his wife, Katherine, and her mother, interior designer Kristen Wil-
liams. For more on their terrazzo-floored labor of love, see our Insider Q&A, starting on page 25.
Naples is building in momentum—both literally and otherwise—and amid the excitement,
we invite you to explore this issue in the laid-back way that makes our city so enticing: Toes in
the sand with a gorgeous sunset on the way.

Q&A: KEBLE PRYCE

All INN Good Time

Everything’s changed at vintage Florida-style gem The Gondolier
Inn, but everything’s still the same as well. One difference is the
smiling face behind the front desk. That would be the co-owner and
operator, Jamaican-born Keble Pryce, who entered the hotel busi-
ness after working in his mother’s catering company. “I got a job here
in the States working as a server,” he says. “A couple of years later, I

met my wife, Katherine, in Nantucket. I was the manager of The Nan-

tucket Hotel, and she was the manager at the White Elephant hotel.”
The couple began visiting Naples in 2015 and noticed The Gondolier,
a louvered-window, terrazzo-floored charmer in Old Naples. Where
some developers might have seen the place as a teardown, Keble and
Katherine fell hard for its old-school vibe. Turn the page for our Q&A
about the renovation. (gondolierinn.com) —John Eder

NI: What’s the history of The Gondolier Inn?

Pryce: Henry and Leona Harer opened what
was then called The Gondolier Apartments in
1958. They were from St. Louis. She promoted
the business with shell art classes, and he took
guests to the best fishing spots around town.

JOHN EDER/MARKER4PHOTOS.COM
The property was in the Harer family for six
decades, and their son, Henry, who managed the
hotel until he died in 2018, lived in what’s now

How did you come to acquire it?
When we came to visit Katherine’s parents, we

COURTESY OF THE MILES COLLIER COLLECTIONS AT REVS INSTITUTE

The Revs Institute, one of the most visited attractions in Naples, recently
finished eighth in a national poll of 10 Best Attractions for Car Lovers. A panel
of experts partnered with 10Best editors from USA Today to pick the initial 20
nominees, and readers determined the top 10.
Revs presents the Miles Collier Collections of more than 100 significant auto-
mobiles built between 1896 and 1995. These vehicles, some of the rarest in the
world, blazed technical trails and redefined aesthetic standards. Neapolitan car
buffs will want to take several laps around the museum, which is a haven for
scholars, preservationists, and passionate connoisseurs of automotive history.

ABODE

This coastal-contemporary property features

neutral tones balanced by pops of blue and coral.
Spacious gathering areas, both inside and out, ac-
commodate the owners’ penchant for entertaining.

A
five-minute walk in either direction from this two-
story home leads to the Gulf of Mexico or Third
Street South. “One of the reasons my clients selected
this home was because of its great location,” says Lisa Ficarra,
president of Ficarra Design Associates in Naples. Within the
property, however, Ficarra notes that they wanted a respite
from Third Street’s lively restaurant and shopping scene,
which led her to embrace a soothing yet high-end aesthetic.
“Collaboration was key in this project,” explains Morgan
Scott, an associate designer with Ficarra Design Associates.
“The clients wanted to bring in characteristics of Naples with
the color palette and textures. They wanted the home to have
an island vibe. We thought of that with each piece.”
A neutral palette, offset by splashes of coral and blue, was
used across all 6,169 square feet. For flooring, the design
team opted for a wide-plank oak wood that varies in shade,
structure, and knots. A light-taupe hue graces the walls, while
coffered ceilings appear throughout the project.
Drama abounds in the airy foyer, where striking glass
pendants are suspended through the center of a floating “U”
staircase. A dark stain on the sapele wood treads and corre-
sponding handrail increases the wow factor.
Because the couple enjoys entertaining, the design team
wanted to provide them with ample seating. Instead of the
typical great room layout, they selected four arm chairs—clad
in a durable, elegant chenille-and-linen blend—to facilitate
conversation. Forged-iron tables lend a charm of their own.
Calacatta porcelain shelving, outfitted with custom lights,
bookends a painting by Evelyn Patricia Terry and highlights
the clients’ exquisite colored-glass collection.

an extra area of entertainment,” Ficarra explains. “The clients did not
want the dining room to be too formal. It is romantic and special.”
In the kitchen, the owners can keep their vino selections chilled in
a built-in wine refrigerator. Here, a beige quantize countertop with a
leathered finish perfectly complements the modernity of the jet-cut
marble backsplash. Dark wood pops against the mostly white space,
whereas bronze frames make an industrial-chic statement when
used on the low-back barstools upholstered in a taupe, pebbled-
leather fabric.
Taupe-colored seating also appears in the laid-back family room in
the form of leather recliners. The inviting sofa, covered in a soft linen,

blue blown-glass sculptures at an art fair and placed them on the outside walls

For the powder room, the designers selected a backlit quartzite countertop

master bath is far more spacious and features a his and her shower with a quartz
bench and a large rain showerhead. “The onyx porcelain tile on the shower

Consider these five strategies to improve
the ECO-FRIENDLINESS of your home
By Liza Grant Smith

1
START COMPOSTING
The why: Composting reduces solid waste and
extends the life of existing landfills. It also can
imbue soil with beneficial nutrients.

The how: The practice has come

a long way from the days when
you threw everything in a big pile

INSTALL LOW-FLOW SHOWERHEADS

The why: Ordinary showerheads are regulated to have a maximum flow rate of 2.5 gallons
per minute (GPM). Replacing just one showerhead with a WaterSense labeled model can
save a family an estimated 2,900 gallons of water annually.

The how: There are plenty of options that meet WaterSense specs of 2 GPM or less but still have cool bells
and whistles. Take Kohler’s Purist 1.75-GPM showerhead ($184, us.kohler.com). Its three distinct sprays are all
enhanced by Katalyst technology, which infuses 2 liters of air per minute to deliver a powerful spray. Kohler
products can be purchased at Wool Kitchen & Bath in Naples (woolkb.com).

46 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
4
USE NON-VOC PAINT
The why: Most paints contain
volatile organic compounds (or
VOCs), hazardous chemicals
that are released into the air when you paint a wall, leading to
indoor air-quality problems and potentially serious health risks.

The how: In response to concerns, companies have devel-

oped low-VOC and zero-VOC paints. The Real Milk Paint
Co. (realmilkpaint.com) let history guide its paint develop-
ment. Milk paint dates back thousands of years, when it
was used on cave walls and artifacts. The company’s paint
is a modern variation made from the same basic ingredi-
ents, resulting in an all-natural and completely biodegrad-
able product. Real Milk Paint is available at Retro Home
in Fort Myers (retrohomellc.com).

5
GET CLEANER CLEANING PRODUCTS
The why: Traditional cleaning supplies can contain
harmful chemicals that, despite making their way to
waste water–treatment plants after going down drains,
can end up in waterways. Over time, this poses a
threat to water quality, fish, and other animals.

The how: Give up hazardous cleaning completely with the

Branch Basics Starter Kit + Oxygen Boost ($69, branchbasics.
com). The key component is the company’s Concentrate, a
plant- and mineral-based, multipurpose formula made with-
out harmful preservatives or alcohol. Dilute the concentrate
with water in the BPA-free plastic spray, foam, and laundry
bottles that come with the set and clean everything, from
tough grease to the dirty hands of a toddler.

NIYAMA PRIVATE ISLANDS MALDIVES

Most resorts in the Maldives cater to couples seek-
ing privacy and relaxation—but not all. Case in point:
Niyama Private Islands Maldives, which presents an
alternative paradise, one with action-packed days, a
family-friendly feel, and plenty of social happenings
set in an extreme tropical dreamscape.
Connected by a small bridge, Niyama’s two islands
are aptly named Play and Chill. Play is ground zero
for watersports. Fishing, snorkeling, kayaking, knee-
boarding, wakeboarding, windsurfing, parasailing,
kitesurfing, water skiing, and Jet Skiing are just a frac-
tion of the 32 water activities on offer. Yet none gar-
ners as much attention as the surfing. Here, the surf
breaks directly on the island’s southern shore, creat-
ing a world-class point for all levels. Those with more
skill can also ride the waves at Kasabu and Hocus Po-
cus, a five- and 10-minute speedboat ride away, re-
spectively, while admirers can watch the action from
the Surf Shack bar, rum cocktail in hand.

GAY THOMPSON
PRESIDENT, CEMENT INDUSTRIES

When Gay Thompson was a little girl, her father would take her to job sites where she’d
play in the sand. Once he discovered that she knew how to count, however, he put his
daughter to work.
“When I was about 6 or 7, he had me help process invoices by putting them in numerical
order,” says Thompson, whose father, William Thompson, and a partner—along with three
employees and a used concrete mixer—started Cement Industries in 1953. Since then, the
Fort Myers firm has built 19 arenas, including the Hertz Arena in Estero, and the two larg-
est arenas in Florida, the BB&T Center in Sunrise and American Airlines Arena in Miami.
Thompson, however, had planned to join the diplomatic corps, not run the family busi-
ness. After studying French at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she lived
in Geneva, Switzerland, then returned home to Southwest Florida. “My dad said, ‘You’re
the oldest, you’re a college graduate, and you get things done. Every company needs a
[tough boss], and you’re it.’”
One of seven children, Thompson operates the company with two siblings, Senior Vice
President Brown Thompson and Carmi Terrell, a corporate secretary. “I’m fascinated by
what we do because I get to see rocks and pieces of metal become complex buildings,”
she says. “It’s even more amazing when I think about how it all started with a handful of
people and one truck.”
In addition to Naples projects that include Arthrex and Avita, an assisted living facility
that’s under construction, Cement Industries also produces Spancrete hollow-core slabs,
which are used between floors in high-rises and other structures to help reduce noise.
When she’s not serving on trade association boards and working with civic organiza-
tions, Thompson writes fiction longhand—specifically, romance stories set in Great Britain’s
early nineteenth-century Regency era. “I have a college student type them, and then I
share them with family and friends,” she says. “My favorite tool isn’t a trowel or anything
related to cement like people might think. My favorite tool is a pen.” «

In 2018, like-minded community leaders and design district business owners Naples Square
joined together to officially form the retail and dining destination, which spans
10 blocks between Fifth Avenue South and Seventh Avenue North, bordered
by U.S. 41 and Goodlette-Frank Road. Today, the design district is fulfilling the
founders’ vision of serving those in search of unusual finds and an eclectic mix
of art, design, style, food, and culture.
Dez Ryan Odegaard, who operates Odegaard art + design, discovered
the Naples Design District shortly after moving to nearby Naples Square.

required a full renovation, including new flooring, cover-
ings on the walls and ceiling, lighting, and furnishings.
In a space full of curiosities and bohemian-style prints,
the teal color—selected by the clients—acts as a unifying
thread. The condo represents a deviation from Gaddis’
typical designs, but she rose to the occasion to arrive at
a fun and funky end result. (reneegaddis.com)

GREAT ROOM elegance—including an abundance of luxuriously upholstered furnishings, stylish draperies, and curated antiques—
O’Neil minimized the formality by painting the case goods white, evoking an equally light and airy atmosphere. For
whimsy, she selected informal chairs for the dining table, which later became her favorite pieces because of the
balance they bring to the room’s overall richness. (bethanyoneil.com)

THE DESIGNER: DWAYNE BERGMANN

THE ROOM: PLAYFULLY PURPLE
DINING ROOM

Once a nondescript, seldom-used living

room, this space took on a whole new
life after Dwayne Bergmann, principal of
Dwayne Bergmann Interiors, transformed
this Naples home. Now, the fun and tasteful
formal dining room is the first area guests
see and a place where family and friends
congregate and linger over lively conver-
sations. To achieve the room’s relaxed yet
upscale appeal, Bergmann surrounded the
lacquered walnut table, set atop a curved
acrylic base, with Alice in Wonderland–
inspired chairs from Spain. The sleek buffet
table was imported from Italy. Overhead,

THE DESIGNER: KELLY KURTYKA
THE ROOM: GLAM DINING ROOM

To pull this stunning Naples dining

room together, Kelly Kurtyka, lead in-
terior designer at Interiors by Design
West, used bold yet timeless elements,
including black-and-white-checked
marble flooring. In addition to ground-
ing the room, the flooring also sets
the tone for the transitional space.
Reflections from the trio of crystal
Ralph Lauren chandeliers bounce off
of the custom antique mirrored wall
and lend a sense of glamour. Kurtyka
created the rectangular tray ceiling—
complete with dropped drywall beam
detailing and crown molding—and
painted the recess a much darker hue
to accent its architectural qualities.
The walls are clad in a woven silk
covering, further augmenting the ro-
mantic ambiance that permeates this
room from top to bottom. (dwest.com)

all of the gold tones, allowing her to work with a white palette. Replacing the dark cabinetry and dated, yel-

effervescent family that calls this charming residence home. (designingnaples.com)

THE ROOM: DREAMY, NAUTICAL

Kira Krümm, principal designer

of Koastal Design Group – Kira
Krümm & Co., loves to design
bedrooms, or, as she refers to them,
“private sanctuaries for dreaming.”
Because this master bedroom is
so large and features 13-foot-high
ceilings, Krümm’s challenge was to
showcase the space while keeping
it cozy and interesting. Inspired
by the island lifestyle on Marco

she selected a soft color palette

THE ROOM: OUTDOOR OASIS

Karen Larson, founder and principal of Broad

Avenue Studios, worked closely with the owner
and architect of this Naples home to take
full advantage of its waterfront setting, with
the goal of creating a harmonious marriage
between the alfresco living space and the dra-
matic seascape. The eyeline of the infinity pool
extends into the water, forming the perception
of one continuous natural vista—a view visible
from every corner of the home. With an outdoor
area designed to accommodate their young,

TRY BOURBON distilleries
By Mark Spivak

Looking for a fall travel destination that combines beautiful

scenery with some of the greatest spirits—and nicest people—
on Earth? Those who head for the Kentucky Bourbon Trail will
be in good company, as more than one million people visit the
distilleries each year.
The starting point is the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Welcome
Center in downtown Louisville, where you can gather informa-

distilleries, remember that Buffalo Trace and Barton 1792 are not
included, having opted out after being purchased by the Sazer-

Four Roses: Master distiller Brent Elliott took over when the
legendary Jim Rutledge retired in 2015, but Four Roses is still as
special as ever. Pay a visit to this historic distillery on the Salt River
in Lawrenceburg and be sure to snag the Limited Edition Small
Batch, if the opportunity presents itself.
Heaven Hill: Founded in 1935 and still family-owned, Heaven
Hill is headquartered in Bardstown, once the epicenter of bour-
bon production. Fifth-generation master distiller Craig Beam
crafts spirits under brands such as Elijah Craig, Evan Williams, and
Old Fitzgerald.

Maker’s Mark: The Samuels family purchased Burk’s Distillery in Loretto in
1953 and began producing its distinctive square bottle with the red, wax-dipped
seal. Today, visitors can dip their own bottles, if they so choose. The unique
taste of Maker’s Mark is due to red winter wheat replacing rye in the mash bill.
Wild Turkey: Lauded master distiller Jimmy Russell (aka “the Buddha of
Bourbon”) has worked at Wild Turkey for 64 years and is now assisted by his
son, Eddie. Standouts include Kentucky Spirit, Rare Breed, and Russell’s Re-

Posh POWERHOUSE
Here’s some fitness news you can use: Athleta, maker of athletic and athleisure wear
for women and girls, opened earlier this year at Waterside Shops in Naples. The brand
sells female empowerment alongside its apparel, highlighting core values that promote
active lifestyles, sustainability, and versatile, performance-focused design. The com-
pany also seeks to create a sense of community among women. To that end, the Naples
store serves as a wellness gathering spot and holds yoga, fitness, and other classes on-
site several days a month. (athleta.gap.com)

GOURD
FOR YOU
Pumpkin shines on National
Pumpkin Day, October 26, and, of
course, Halloween. This nutrient-
rich fall staple packs high amounts
of antioxidants, beta-carotene,
potassium, and vitamins A, C,
and E. Add it to baked goods,
desserts, soups, salads, and more to protect eye health, regulate blood pres-
sure, and reduce your risk of cancer, diabetes, and stroke. Because it’s rich in
fiber and low in calories (about 49 in a cup), eating pumpkin may aid in weight
loss by augmenting satiated feelings. Celebrate the good gourd with a loaf
of pumpkin spice bread from Epiphany Gluten Free Bakery in Naples. Or
pick up a package of Paleo Fit Pancake Mix and follow Ephipany’s recipe for a
pumpkin-infused breakfast classic. (epiphanyglutenfree.com)

PALEO PUMPKIN SPICE WAFFLES OR PANCAKES

1 B⁄e cups Epiphany’s Paleo Fit Pancake Mix
4 eggs
2 tbsp. oil
2 tbsp. molasses
B⁄c cup pumpkin puree
1 tbsp. vanilla extract or spiced rum
1 tsp. allspice
2 tsp. cinnamon
B⁄e tsp. nutmeg

Whisk eggs, oil, molasses, pumpkin puree, and extract until combined. Add
Paleo mix and spices, and whisk until there are no lumps. Cook waffles or
pancakes as normally preferred.

A NEW LEASH ON LIFE

Best Friend for a Day

Pet ownership can come with a host of health benefits. The Cen-
ters for Disease Control and Prevention cites research that shows
that bonding with a pet can help increase fitness, lower stress,
reduce blood pressure, and decrease cholesterol and triglyceride
levels. It’s also great for your mental health, with pet ownership
lessening feelings of loneliness and leading to increased joy.
For those interested in canine companionship (and the benefits
that come with it) without the full-time commitment, the Humane
Society Naples offers a daily Rescue Recess. The program allows
visitors to check dogs out of the shelter for two hours or longer
depending on the time and day.
You can take a dog to various locations—HSN has plenty of
ideas—or to your home to hang out. You’re not the only beneficia-
ry, of course. Because the program gets dogs out of the shelter for
an extended period of time, it helps the pooches eliminate extra
energy and lower their stress hormones, too. “Even if it’s just tak-
ing a buddy home to watch Netflix, it’s a win-win for all involved,”
says Jonathan Foerster, HSN’s director of community affairs.
The program is open to anyone 16 years of age or older with a
valid driver’s license and a vehicle to transport the animal safely.
HSN provides a leash, collar, water, dish, Frisbee, and balls, and
all dogs are outfitted with an
adopt-me vest. Participants
are encouraged to share
images of their adventures
with #RescueRecess in order
to help their friend find a
“furever” home. And if you fall
in love with your short-term
companion, you can adopt it
through the humane society.

LEAVE A TRAIL
For adventurers who take the road less-
traveled or folks who tend to lose stuff,
the Breadcrumb mini location marker
is a godsend. The small device can be
used as a personal safety beacon or to
keep tabs on people, places, and things,
even when there’s no cell service. Controlled via a free tracking app,
it connects to a smartphone through Bluetooth and can continuously

plot its location on the app’s map using GPS. When within a 150-yard
range, the app guides you to the device with bright LED lights and
an alert sound. When not in range, its last known location is always
displayed. Users can share access with others through the app so that
they, too, can locate the device and remotely activate the lights and
sound. Although it has many applications for outdoor enthusiasts, it
also can keep track of myriad personal items, such as your luggage,
keys, and parked car. (breadcrumbtech.com)

Romo’s colors wrap the accent pillows atop Thayer Coggin’s

leather-clad sofas in the living room. Here, swivel lounge
chairs by Max Davani and a pair of cocktail tables from
Theodore Alexander join the mix. Glistening, sandy textured
walls by O’Guin Decorative Finishes complete the scene.

COMING
ABOVE: A sparkling, minimalist aesthetic prevails in the master bath, where a Nokori tub by
BainUltra, purist fixtures by Kohler, a floating vanity with individually lit drawers, and Porcelanosa’s
modern large-format porcelain flooring creates a relaxed spa-like aura.
