DESIGN RATIONALE FOR A REDESIGNED POSTER IN

TYPOGRAPHY AND LAYOUT

For this exercise, the main objective was to apply any principles of typography

cited from Ina Saltz in recreating a poster of the National Statistics Month from the years

2016-2019. Initially, the designer made thorough research regarding the themes of each

year so that she could come up with a concept that would fit her preference the most.

After doing such, the designer has decided to make a poster for the year 2018. The theme

for the said year incorporates sustainable development for tourism. In working on the

poster, the designer chose to apply the approach of “being expressive” wherein

letterforms are heavily modified or manipulated for the purpose of emphasizing the

meaning of the text.

The designer chose to make the text “29th” as the focal point of the poster. Each

letterforms and numbers were rendered in 3D. Inside the three-dimensional forms were

prominent tourist spots in the Philippines: specifically, Banaue Rice Terraces, Boracay

Island, Siargao, and Mt. Mayon. Each of the forms were modified in such a way that the

visual elements included seemed to be enclosed within the three-dimensional space.

Some elements, however, were intentionally placed overlapping the text – this is in order

to give the design a more dynamic look.

Beside the text “29th” is the title “National Statistics Month October 2018” presented

in bold letters of the font Franklin Gothic Heavy. The letterforms and numbers from this
title were also manipulated, although not as intensely modified as the previous design.

An arrow that zigzags upward cuts the text in half diagonally. The purpose of having this

line is to resemble a line graph that would appropriately represent the main context of the

event which is statistics.

The color scheme of the poster is comprised of a combination of vibrant greens

and blues. The background includes faint thin lines that zigzag upwards – this design also

supports the main context of the event which is statistics. A vector of cubes and triangles

are placed on the far left and right corners as an added aesthetic feature. Other

information included are presented in the fonts Dylovastuff and Franklin Gothic Book

respectively. All texts are colored in either blue or green in order to ensure the unity and

coherence of the entirety of the poster.
