Let’s set sail!

Introduction
The time has come to put your thinking caps on and begin building a
mini toy boat for the annual boat race.

Brief
Your task is to design a boat that will take place in a race at the
end of this unit. To create a suitable boat, you will have to
research the properties are boat needs in order to stay afloat and
avoid damages.

Project specifications Resources/Materials


Your boat design must meet these Ideal materials that could be
specifications: used
a. Use of recycled materials. § Plastic
b. Hold the weight of 4 $2 coins. § Pop sticks
c. Have a sail to allow the wind § Cardboard paper (sail)
to move it in the water. § Sponges
d. Have the characteristics of a
boat (absorbent, light weight).

Project Management
1. Students will be introduced to the new STEM project about
building a mini boat (1 lesson).
2. You will individually research toy boat designs and begin
sketching a draft labelling the materials needed and the
properties of the boat (2 lessons).
3. Collaborate with your group to create a mutual design and list
final materials needed and why they were chosen. (1 lesson).
4. Begin building the toy boat (1 lesson).
5. All boats will compete in a boat race (1 lesson).

Evaluation Presentation
a. You will complete a self- Your group will present
assessment about the project. the final design in a boat
b. A checklist will be used to race at the end of the

Time
You will have 8 lessons to
complete this project.
