Question 2 [10 marks]

(a) A vessel consists of a hemisphere of radius r mounted on an inverted right circular cone
of base radius r and height h. The total surface area S, of the vessel is given by

changing at the instant when r is 3 cm and h is 4 cm.

(b) A current of 12 amperes enters three resistors connected in parallel. The resistances (in
ohms) of the resistors are 2, 3 and 6 and the currents (in amperes) through these resistors
are x, y and z respectively. It is known that x + y + z = 12. Given that the total power
dissipated in the resistors is given by E = 2x2 + 3y 2 + 6z 2 , use the method of Lagrange
multipliers to find the least possible value of E.

Question 3 [10 marks]

(a) A three-dimensional space curve C is defined by the vector function

2i + j − k. Find the exact value of α.

(b) A moving particle in the 3-dimensional space starts from an initial position of (−6, −12, 42)
and with an initial velocity of 2j − 24k. Its acceleration at any time t is 4i + 4k. Find
the distance of the particle from the origin at the instant when it attains its minimum
speed.
