INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
1. Write your student number on the front page of the answer book provided. Do not write
your name.
2. This examination paper contains SIX (6) questions and comprises THREE (3) printed
pages.
5. This is a closed book examination. You are allowed to use one A4-size, double-sided
help sheet.
6. You may use non-programmable calculators. However, you should lay out systemati-
cally the various steps in the calculations.

(b) Use the Maclaurin series for ln(1 + x), −1 < x ≤ 1, to find
(a) A vessel consists of a hemisphere of radius r mounted on an inverted right circular cone
of base radius r and height h. The total surface area S, of the vessel is given by
√
S = 2πr2 + πr r2 + h2 .
If r is increasing at 0.5 cm/s and h is decreasing at 1 cm/s, find the rate at which S is
changing at the instant when r is 3 cm and h is 4 cm.
(b) A current of 12 amperes enters three resistors connected in parallel. The resistances (in
ohms) of the resistors are 2, 3 and 6 and the currents (in amperes) through these resistors
are x, y and z respectively. It is known that x + y + z = 12. Given that the total power
dissipated in the resistors is given by E = 2x2 + 3y 2 + 6z 2 , use the method of Lagrange
multipliers to find the least possible value of E.
(b) A moving particle in the 3-dimensional space starts from an initial position of (−6, −12, 42)
and with an initial velocity of 2j − 24k. Its acceleration at any time t is 4i + 4k. Find
the distance of the particle from the origin at the instant when it attains its minimum
speed.

(a) Let f (x, y) be a differentiable function on R2 . At a point (a, b), the directional derivative
of f in the direction of 4i + 3j is 1 and the directional derivative of f in the direction of
3i + 4j is 0. Find
(i) the exact value of the directional derivative of f at (a, b) in the direction of i + j,
(ii) the minimum directional derivative of f at (a, b).
(b) A wire is shaped like a two-dimensional space curve C defined by the vector function
r(t) = (ln(tan t) + cos(2t)) i + (sin(2t))j, π/8 ≤ t ≤ π/4.
The density ρ(x, y) of the wire at any point (x, y) is given by ρ(x, y) = y 2 . The moment
of inertia of the wire about the x-axis, Ix , is given by the line integral
Z
Ix = y 2 ρ(x, y) ds.
