HP 3PAR SETUP
AND
CONFIGURATIO
N SP & VSP
There are two options available to manage a
new HP 3Par StoreServ, the physical Service
Processor and the Virtual Service Processor. In
this guide, I will cover the initial setup for both,
and review how to setup the StoreServ after the
Service Processor is configured.

THE EASY METHOD FOR SETUP WITH

EITHER SP OR VSP IS IN AN ENVIRONMENT

WITH DHCP CONFIGURED. IN THIS EXAMPLE

WE ARE USING THE SCOPE 192.168.0.0/23.

Physical Service Processor To start, attach a

patch cable to the iLo port on the Physical SP
and a patch directly to an available laptop
Ethernet port. The laptop port should be
configured with IP address 192.169.0.2, Subnet
Mask 255.255.255.0 and Gateway 192.168.0.1.
Open a web browser, and navigate to
https://192.168.0.100/sp/SetIpAddress.html/.
After logging in under the ‘setupusr’ account
(password is blank pre-MOB) you can assign an
IP address to the SP.

Set the new IP Address for the SP.

After changing the IP address, the easy way to

complete the process is through HP 3Par
SmartStart. Simply open up the SmartStart
application, under Set up systems select Set up
the Service Processor This will open a web

the Service Processor. This will open a web
browser to the IP address of the SP. Log on to
the SP with the ‘setupusr’ account. Enter the
StoreServ Serial Number, seven digit located on
the back right panel of the storage shelf. After
the SP ID is generated, you will give the SP a
hostname and IP settings. You will also need to
fill out System Support Contact information and
time settings. The final step prior to applying
settings is changing the passwords for both
‘setupusr’ and ‘3parcust’ accounts. The settings
are checked and processed and the SP
initialization is complete.

After entering the IP

Virtual Service Processor The first step for using

a Virtual Service Processor is the deployment of
the OVF appliance. It’s an easy process for any

previously. Best practice involves setting the disk
to Thin Provisioning in order to reduce disk
consumption. After the appliance is deployed,
open a console to the machine and power up the
VSP. Much like we did previously with the
Physical SP, we start by setting the IP. Log on
with the ‘setupusr’ account and fill in the
appropriate fields. After the new address is set,
we could complete the procedure with
SmartStart as we did before or continue to the
Moment-of-Birth directly via console. To initiate
MOB through console log on with the ‘root’
account. In this example I configured the VSP for
a new site. Enter the 7-digit 3Par serial when
asked. Verify the network interface settings and
configure the time settings. The new settings are
validated and the VSP will reboot with the new
configuration. Note that the physical SP can be
initiated in a similar fashion via KVM or SSH.

the StoreServ.

StoreServ MOB We can continue where we left

off on the Physical SP setup in 3Par SmartStart
to easily run through the 3Par StoreServ
initialization. This time select ‘Set up the storage
system’ and enter the SP or VSP IP address. A
new web browser will open to allow us to
complete the process. Make sure that
the StoreServ is connected to the same subnet
as the SP via the MGMT port on the back panel
of each node. The SP should find the StoreServ
unit from the serial we entered previously. Enter
the StoreServ hostname and the desired network
address. The time settings can be automatically

copied from the SP. The final step prior to

verification is to set the ‘3paradm’ account
password. Verification will then complete and we
are done!
