ELA 4 Unit 1, Summative A: Listening Comprehension

Writing ​The Giver

Listen to and watch the video​ in which the book’s author, Lois Lowry, discussions her
writing and reads a selection from the novel. Answer the accompanying questions. When
possible, include your own ideas and opinions. You may use information from the book, as it
was required reading for this unit.

1. Where were Lowry’s parents? Why?


= Lowry’s parents had gone because they both were old. Lowry’s mother she is very
weak and she is also blind. Lowry’s father he still can walk on that time, but he can not
remember anything from the past.

2. What kinds of stories did Lowry hear?


= The kinds of stories that Lowry hear is the story about her mother's life, Lowry’s mother
has told her childhood, her teenage years, her romance with Lowry’s father, her
marriage, also the memory of Lowry’s mother first child dead.

3. Why was Lowry’s mother in bed?


= Lowry’s mother was in bed because she was chuckle, and also she was very weak
and blind, so can not do anything too much.

4. Was Lowry older, or her sister? How do you know?


= Lowry sister was older because her sister was dead and Lowry’s mother had told the
story to Lowry about her first child dead, so that first child is Lowry’s sister.

5. Do you think Lowry has children? Why or why not?


= I think that Lowry has children because this story she may write it for her parents and
her children to say that the memories that she has written in the book it came from her
parents.

6. Describe some of an author’s writing process.


= She started writing the story because she got the inspiration because her mother
memories that Lowry listened to. Before she starts the process she need to decide who
will be the main character, so she decided that main character will be boy and the age
for about 12 or 13.

7. Why did Lowry write the character of Jonas?


= Lowry write the character of Jonas because she has decided that the main character
will be boy because she said that she just created a girl character before create jonas.
The age that Lowry want Jonas to be is about 12 - 13 years old because the character
coming to be adults and on that age they need to make some decisions.

8. Why did Lowry choose the passage she read?


= Lowry she choose the passage that she read because the passage may came from
the story that her mother told her and Lowry got the inspiration, so she put the story into
the book.

9. What do we know that Jonas does not?


= The things that we know, but Jonas doesn’t know about christmas before he got the
memories and also he doesn't know what is grand parent because they were got
released.

10. Summarize the reading passage.


= From the reading passage, Jonas has knowing something about what is christmas and
the memory that he was in the room smelling something and get to know about what is
grandparents.

11. What did Jonas agree with in the memory?


= Jonas agree about the light from the candles that he said he likes it in the memory.

12. How did Lowry’s memories influence her writing? Be specific.


=

13. What information did we learn about the Community that we didn’t get from the novel?
14. Do you agree with Lowry’s conclusion about memory? Why or why not?
