The adage that “a woman’s place is in the home” no longer applies to the dauntless ladies in space. The
first woman in space was a Soviet who orbited the earth with a male companion in 1963 and landed
unscathed after a three-day sojourn aboard a spacecraft. Seemingly, it was inevitable that another Soviet
woman would repeat her feat. The second woman in space was Svetlana Savitskaya, a parachutist and test
pilot, who served as researcher aboard Soviet Soyuz T-7, which had a rendezvous with Salyut 7, the space
station in which the longest manned orbital flight was completed.
Ms. Savitskaya’s aptitude for space travel was patent in her past experience in aviation. Holder of several
women’s records in aviation, she had flown sundry types of aircraft and made over 500 parachute jumps.
Her father was a Soviet Air Force Marshal, and her husband a pilot. Without a qualm she boarded the
spacecraft with her commander, Lieutenant Colonel Leonid Popov, and another rookie astronaut who was
the flight engineer.
Soviet authorities announced that they were looking forward to gaining further information about “weaker
sex” , so-called in the Soviet newspaper Tass, under the stressful conditions of space travel. Sex, however,
is not considered n impediment but rather a benefit in space, for the Soviet have lauded women for their
precision and accuracy in carrying out experiments.
As planned, the American put their first woman in space in mid-1983. Sally Ride was their choice. Ms.
Ride joined the NASA program with five other women and thirty men to train as astronauts in the space
shuttle program. She faces an epoch when space travel will no longer be a glamorous adventure but rather a
commonplace day’s work.

Birds that feed in flocks commonly retire together into roosts. The reasons for roosting communally are not
always obvious, but there are some likely benefits. In winter especially, it is important for birds to keep warm at
night and conserve precious food reserves. One way to do this is to find a sheltered roost. Solitary roosters
shelter in dense vegetation or enter a cavity – horned larks dig holes in the ground and ptarmigan burrow into
snow banks – but the effect of sheltering is magnified by several birds huddling together in the roosts, as wrens,
swifts, brown creepers, bluebirds, and anise do. Body contact reduces the surface area exposed to the cold air, so
the birds keep each other warm. Two kinglets huddling together were found to reduce their heat losses by a
quarter, and three together saved a third of their heat.
The second possible benefit of communal roosts is that they act as "information centers." During the day,
parties of birds will have spread out to forage over a very large area. When they return in the evening some will
have fed well, but others may have found little to eat. Some investigators have observed that when the birds set
out again next morning, those birds that did not feed well on the previous day appear to follow those that did.
The behavior of common and lesser kestrels may illustrate different feeding behaviors of similar birds with
different roosting habits. The common kestrel hunts vertebrate animals in a small, familiar hunting ground,
whereas the very similar lesser kestrel feeds on insects over a large area. The common kestrel roosts and hunts
alone, but the lesser kestrel roosts and hunts in flocks, possibly so one bird can learn from others where to find
insect swarms.
Finally, there is safety in numbers at communal roosts since there will always be a few birds awake at any
given moment to give the alarm. But this increased protection is partially counteracted by the fact that mass
roosts attract predators and are especially vulnerable if they are on the ground. Even those in trees can be
attacked by birds of prey. The birds on the edge are at greatest risk since predators find it easier to catch small
birds perching at the margins of the roost.

II. READING
Part 1: Read the passage and choose the correct answer for the following questions:
All at once Hazel was coming in through the French windows, pulling off gardening gloves, and Bill was
entering through the door, both at once. So I only had time to take one quick look at her before I turned to face
him. All very confusing. What that first glimpse showed me was that time had thickened her figure but didn’t
seem to have made much difference to her face. It still had good skin and youthful outlines. She was holding a
bunch of roses – must have been cutting them in the garden while waiting for me. The gardening gloves lent a
delightfully informal touch. It was quite an entrance, though Bill spoilt it a bit by making his at the same time.
Bill seemed longer and thinner. His tightly massed hair had a tinge of grey. Apart from that, twenty years
had done nothing to him, except deepen the lines of thoughtfulness that had already, when I knew him, begun
to spread across his face. Or was that all? I looked at him again, more carefully, as he looked away from me at
Hazel. Weren’t his eyes different somehow? More inward looking than ever? Gazing in not merely at his
thoughts, but at something else, something he was keeping hidden or perhaps protecting.
Then we were chattering and taking glasses in our hands, and I came back to earth. For the first ten
minutes we were all so defensive, so carefully probing, that nobody learnt anything. Bill had forgotten me
altogether, that much was clear. He was engaged in getting to know me from scratch, very cautiously so as not
to hit a wrong note, with the object of getting me to contribute a big subscription to his African project. I kept
trying to absorb details about Hazel, but Bill was talking earnestly about African education, and the strain of
appearing to concentrate while actually thinking about his wife proved so great that I decided it would be
easier just to concentrate. So I did. I let him hammer away for about ten more minutes, and then the daughter,
who seemed to be acting as parlourmaid, showed in another visitor. Evidently we were to be four at lunch.

which ambitious parents make. Generally, the child will be only too aware of what his parents
expect, and will fail. Unrealistic parental expectations can cause great damage to children.

ambitious in a sensible way, the child may succeed in doing very well – especially if the parents are

III. Read the following passage and choose the best answer. (2ps)
Since the world became industrialized, the number of animal species that have either become extinct or
have neared extinction has increased. Bengal tigers, for instance, which once roamed the jungles in vast numbers,
now number only about 2,300. By the year 2025, it is estimated that they will become extinct. What is alarming
about the case of the Bengal tiger is that this extinction will have been caused almost entirely by poachers who,
according to some sources, are not always interested in material gain but in personal gratification. This is an
example of the callousness that is contributing to the problem of extinction. Animals, such as Bengal tiger, as well
as other endangered species, are valuable parts of the world’s ecosystem. International laws protecting these
animals must be enacted to ensure their survival and the survival of our planet.
Countries around the world have begun to deal with the problem in various ways. Some countries, in an
effort to circumvent the problem, have allocated large amounts of land to animal reserves. They then charge
admission prices to help defray the costs of maintaining the parks, and they often must also depend on world
organizations for support. This money enables them to invest in equipment and patrols to protect the animals.
Another response to the increase in animal extinction is an international boycott of products made from
endangered species. This has had some effect, but by itself it will not prevent animals from being hunted and killed.

maximum output from its employees.
Since 1920s, the firm’s industrial engineers have been studying every detail of every task (2) ____ by most UPS
employees. From their studies have come time and motion standards that govern how those tasks are performed
and how long they should take. Drivers, for example, are expected to walk to a customer’s door at a speed of
exactly three feet per second. They are told to knock as soon as they get there, rather than (3) ____ time looking
for a doorbell.
Work engineers are (4) ____ riding with drivers, timing everything from stops at traffic lights, to wait at
customers’ doorway, to stairway climbs, to coffee break. And they are not (5) ____ to pointing out the occasional
inefficiency. Additionally, supervisors ride with the least good drivers, noting how they work and constantly (6)
____ them until their work is up to standard.
The (7) ____of all this work engineering is efficiency, and UPS has been called one of the most efficient
companies anywhere. It's also a highly profitable company. Most drivers take the regimentation in stride: many
show (8) ____ in meeting the UPS standards each day. Others, however, feel that they are constantly being pushed,
that it is impossible for them to relax at work. UPS officials claim that the standards provide accountability. And,
they say, employees who work according to UPS standards should feel less tired at the end of the day.

replaced. Then Sally saw a notice pinning to the door of the restaurant, saying it was closed for redecoration, and
Peter discovered that the swimming pool was empty. When we eventually got to our room we were horrified find
that it was at the back of the hotel, and we had a view of a car park, which seemed to be used as a rubbish dump.
We seriously began to wonder whether or not to stay.

Large animals inhabit the desert have evolved adaptations for reducing the effects of
extreme hot. One adaptation is to be light in color, and to reflect the Sun's rays. Desert mammals
also depart from the normal mammalian practice of maintaining a constantly body temperature.
Instead of try to keep down the body temperature inside the body, what would involve the
expenditure of water and energy, desert mammals allow their temperatures rise to what would
normally be fever height, and temperatures as high as 46 degree Celsius have been measured in
Grant's gazelles. The overheated body cools down during the cold desert night, and indeed the
temperature may fall unusual low by dawn, as low as 34 degrees Celsius in the camel. This is a
advantage since the heat of the first few hours of daylight absorb in warming up the body.

PART 3: READING (6.0 points)
I.Read the following passage and choose the best answer (A, B, C or D) to each question.
(2, 0 points)
Until recently, most American entrepreneurs were men. Discrimination against women in
business, the demands of caring for families, and lack of business training had kept the number
of women entrepreneurs small. Now, however, businesses owned by women account for more
than $40 billion in annual revenues, and this figure is likely to continue rising throughout the
1990s. As Carolyn Doppelt Gray, an official of the Small Business Administration, has noted,
“The 1970s was the decade of women entering management, and the 1980s turned out to be the
decade of the woman entrepreneur.”
What are some of the factors behind this trend? For one thing, as more women earn
advanced degrees in business and enter the corporate world, they are finding obstacles. Women
are still excluded from most executive suites. Charlotte Taylor, a management consultant, had
noted , “ In the 1970s women believed if they got an MBA and worked hard, they could become
chairman of the board. Now they have found out that it isn’t going to happen, so they go out on
their own.”
In the past, most women entrepreneurs worked in “women’s” fields – cosmetics and
clothing , for example. But this is changing. Consider ASK Computer Systems, a $22 - million -
a year computer software business. It was founded in 1973 by Sandra Kurtzig, who was then a
housewife with degrees in math and engineering. When Kurtzig founded the business, her first
product was software that let weekly newspapers keep tabs on their newspaper carriers – and
her office was a bedroom at home, with a shoebox under the bed to hold the company’s cash.
After she succeeded with the newspaper software system, she hired several bright computer-
science graduates to develop additional programs. When these were marketed and sold, ASK
began to grow. It now has 200 employees, and Sandra Kurtzig owns $66.9 million of stock.
Of course, many women who start their own businesses fail, just as men often do. They
still face hurdles in the business world, especially problems in raising money ; the banking and
finance world is still dominated by men, and old attitudes die hard. Most businesses owned by
women are still quite small. But the situation is changing; there are likely to be many more
Sandra Kurtzig in the years ahead.
